The title of this blog post is dedicated to the fact that I have still not seen either of these animals. I'm a little sad about it! On a brighter note--it was a very sunny day this morning. I got a little red in my checks! Looks like I'm getting sun from working rather than getting sun the way I wish I was...and that's the beach/the weekends! Preschool today was good because for half of the morning we were outside, and to make it better our barrista brought my coffee out to me. He now knows that I like it black. It's bizzaree to Australis that I like my coffee black. Highlight of my day: We went running along the hilly roads of Goonellbah during sunset and it was gorgeous. I plan to go back soon ... read more

I know I have written those numerous times, but I can't write it enough that the days here are getting better and better. I am so thankful that the other teachers Kelly and I are working with are so nice. It helps that we are able to talk to them at work and learn about the center, and the culture over here in Australia. Today a teacher was telling us about the Aboriginal Australians. I have seen the word and heard the word "Aboriginal" numerous times since I've been here and I've been curious to learn more about them since I really had no idea. The Aboriginal Australians are the indigienous people of Australia. They have also made predictions years ago, that a mountain peak in Australia is going to slowly going to become destyoed. Today, ... read more

As mentioned in my last blog, I woke up this morning and had a good feeling about the day. Why you ask? First because we had a good weekend to look back on, and second because the sun was shining. It was our first Monday working in the preschool, and Mondays have a differnt feel from the rest of the day. No matter what day of the week, a childcare center is never going to be the same. Monday's however, are fresh, making it easier for everyone to be at work (as long as we have our coffee!) We also had some new children come to our class today, and that made it fun to get to know those children more. I'm still working on learning all the names of the children last week and now ... read more

Byron Bay weekend met our expectations to what we were told Byron Bay would be. We were told is a hippie, party, surfing and toursity town. Despite the over-toursity and expensive shops, I really enjoyed my time in Byron. April, Kelly and Kelsey enjoyed it as well. We were all happy to be out of Lismore and experince what Australia is about...and experience what we came here for: adventure, travel and memories that last. Fun fact: Byron Bay is the Eastern most part of Australia. Our weekend started on Saturday morning when we boarded the bus for Byron. It's only about an hour away and the bus ride went quick. Our bus ride might have gone quick because our bus driver was going a few kilometers over the speed limit up a bumpy, rocky, twisty road. ... read more

First just let me say, Happy Friday! I'm always happy that it's Friday but today makes it even more exciting because it is the start to our first "full weekend" in Australia. It also completes our first week at pre school. Today at preschool was even better! I must say, the people we work with are great and easy to get along with! I'm happy about this because it makes the "Chaos" of the pre school better. This is true in any work setting--if you have good co workers your day will be THAT much better. A cute story worth reading--It is the Queen of Englands birthday today, and so, in honor of that today at pre school we had a party for the queen. The children made crowns, invitations, and even decorations. The children also ... read more

To start off, my blog title is in regards to what the Australians call credit cards here. It's very often that the stores won't accept "Eftopos." An unfamilar term to add to my Aussie dictionary! Aussie slang: "Trolley" is a shopping cart. (And it's normal to push these around in the malls.) It's also important to "Watch out for your grapes" in the grocery store while pushing your trolley because they are concerned about rolling grapes in the grocery store. It's logical, yes, but I couldn't help but laugh, and take photos of a sign labaled "Look out for grapes." My positive thoughts are growing greater because today at Nestle Inn was even better. I must say it was better because the weather was on our side today. It only rained for an hour or two ... read more

Day number two, and I'm already feeling better about the Australian pre school. We were told prior to coming over to Australia that the schools will be "laid back", but to experience the "laid back" puts much more of a meaning to the term. It's true in life also, we learn best by experience. I always try to keep a positive attitude, no matter the situation I'm in. I've always found that keeping a positive attitude helps every and any situation. And what I've learned from it? It's alwaystrue. For all of you who might be reading thing blog...if your having a bad day...keep your head up and read my blog for some giggles! I always have an odd story or two to slab a smile on your faces (I hope so at least.) In my ... read more

Today was the first full day of Australian pre school! And my first rection: It's true when they describe Australian pre schools as "less structure" compared to American pre schools. It seemed a little over whelming at first, but I keep telling myself it was the first day and I am just getting used to it. It was a day to "feel everything out" and get a grip on how the day will go. Some differences I notice between American preschools and Australia pre schools... -snack time is "Tea time" (morning and afternoon tea!) -a sweatshirt is a "jumper" -4 year olds saying "Rubbish" in reference to garbage...It's hard to hold back a laugh or two. -By "less structure" I mean the students don't has as much whole group time (story telling, calendar time) and it's ... read more

My highlight of the day was visiting an Australian mall. You ask why? Well, not because I bought anything, but because it has 2 grocery stores in the mall. You won't find that back home. People come from all over the world to see the Mall of America...they should start coming to Australia because you can get your groceries here. Another interesting thing I noted about the food in Australia, specifcially, subway, was the difference in meants/ingredients sold. Subway here has beets, and lamb as option for meat (well, beets for vegeterians.) Also, shredded carrots come as a veggie option. The cheese offered...Old English instead of American. I was so fascinated with the subway differences that I might have questioned the subway employee with question after question of differences and why this and why that? Maybe ... read more

So here it is, my first morning waking up in Aussie and it's a bit colder than I was thinking it might be. It feels like the fall breeze back in Minnesota. I'm happy to say that I woke up feeling replenished and on Aussie time. I can only hope that I hold this feeling throughout the day. Kelly and I woke up this morning and went on a run through the hills of Goonebellah, and it was a beautiful hilly run. When I say hilly, i mean HILLY (or HELLY should I say.) We were able to give ourselves a nice running tour of the town, and got a feel for how far it's going to be to walk to the child center. It will be just a quick 20 minute walk. We went to ... read more
