I have been here less than a week, and find that I am reminding myself often of that. I am going through some culture shock and American withdrawals in my first few days of being Italy. I think many Americans have the stereotype that Italians may be fatter because they eat so many carbohydrates. This stereotype is very much a steretype... the only fat Italian I have seen is a young infant and that is normal. The Italain culture focuses on portion control and snacking is 'out of the norm.' It sounds bizarre but this is one culture difference that my body will not adapt to so easily. For those of you who know me well enough, you know that I like to snack often. My snacks are healthy (proteins, vegetables, fruits and good fats.) My ... read more

What a wild whirlwind it has been the past couple of days between flying from Minneapolis to Torino, meeting the fellow travelers from my Greenheart Travel Group, and moving into my new host familia. I have been in Italy a wee bit over 24 hours and I can confidently say that the pizza here was love at first sight. My friend Jennie and I were rather tired from the 2 flights we had been on but I think jet lag has not got the best of me yet. I am waiting for that. So our flight went fairly fast with movies, sleeping, and eating. We flew Attalia airlines into Milan and I was happy to see that wine was a complimentary drink offered on the plane. Instead of pretzels/peanuts the Attalia airlines offer a small a ... read more

North America September 3rd 2014

For most people, a warm vacation is desired and dreamed of. That's not highly the case when it is 110 degrees weather for a number of days. Prior to our arrival in Phoenix I was told that it had not hit 100 that whole week...... We must have arrived from Minnesota with some high hopes for sunshine which we sure got! I would say this trip to Phoenix was filled with the two F's..... Family and food. Upon arrival, my dad and I met up with Grandma and an aunt at Paradise Bakery. Little did I know unail this visit that Paradise Bakery has been bought out by Panera Bread. it was easy to tell by the apperance and style of Paradise Bakery that it was a relative to Panera. Thursday evening we were lucky enough ... read more

A weekend get away is one that will often "refresh" you from the chaos of everyday life. This past weekend our family and some friends headed to Northern Wisconsin for a stay at Lakewood Resorts. Located in Cable, WI, this is a family friendly area on the lake offering condos with full kitchens :) We took advantage of the full kitchens and cooked dinner a couple nights on our stay there. It's nice to have a unit with a kitchen because it allows eating at a low-cost for a large number of people. Some people have the idea of get away as absolutely no cooking at all. I see your point--but think about some of the quick easy meals you can do in the kitchen. One night we made frozen pizzas and another night we had ... read more

Happy Tuesday! Hello friends, I am writing to you to share my love for eating for on-the-go traveling. Grubbing while traveling may seem like a hectic, stressful and expensive add on of your travel. Let me tell you there is plenty of stress free-budget friendly snacks that you can make ahead of time or prepare prior to your travels! One of my personal favorites is mixing up a batch of granola prior to traveling. When I say traveling I mean anything from backpacking, flying, camping, or a road trip up north. Granola is an easy to make health friendly snack for all to enjoy :) This morning, on my day off, thanks to my flexible float teacher job, I whipped up a batch of coconut-mango granola. On my trip to Hawaii this past January I was ... read more

Tin foil dinner, smore's and hot dogs on the campfire. That's what I call a true summer in Minnesota weekend. I spent this past weekend near St. Cloud Minnesota on a tubing and camping adventure with my cousin, Heather. This adventurous weekend was proof that you can have a "vacation" yet still be so close to home. Less than a 2 hour drive away from the Twin Cities, we went tubing at Two Rivers. It was fairly cheap as well--just 10$ to rent the tube for a ride down the river. Let me tell you however--this is no relaxing ride. There was no waiver to sign, they simply drop you off on the side of the road and off you go into the River, which some people think will be a relaxing lazy ride. With the ... read more

Happy Thursday!Long time no write on here....When I began this blog I thought it was originally going to be for my trip to Australia and leave it at that. Soon after that trip I knew I wanted to travel more and share my stories. With that said I used this blog for my trip to Israel in October 2013. I have now decided to use this blog for more than just my travels abroad, but rather share my insights, teaching experiences, any thoughts I want to share, and of course to spread peace and love to all of you! If you need some uplifting reading in your day, come read my blog and I hope you can end with a smile on your face. Many people ask me how I afford all of the traveling I ... read more

Middle East » Israel » South District » Eilat October 30th 2013

Ahalon (Hello in Arabic) and welcome to the final (big) blog of my journey in Israel. I’ve been having mixed feelings about going back home because over the past few days I’ve had thoughts of extending my stay here to live and work on a Kibbutz, but it seems that to do this you need advanced planning. So, it’s not possible for this journey but I will make it happen in the future very soon. A kibbutz is a community of people living and working together; and people from many places come to volunteer on them for 2-6 months. It’s on my travel-to list without a doubt. Over the course of the past two days I have been to the South of Israel, Eilat, and crossed to border from Israel into Jordan to go to Petra. ... read more

Hello readers, and happy Sunday to you! It is Sunday night for me, and I have been out of my Tel Aviv apartment since Friday, and have since than been in the North. I've been treated very well with an Israeli host family--Pdudya and Moti who are taking wonderful care of me! I came here Friday evening and had Shabbat dinner with their family. (Let me remind you that I know Pdudya and Moti from a family I babysit for back home....so these are the grandparents of a girl I babysit for...) Their family (son and wife and 2 children) came over for Shabbat dinner. This Shabbat dinner was much different than the previous Shabbat dinner I was at because there was much less people. I was able to have English conversations with everyone in attendance ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Jerusalem District » Jerusalem October 23rd 2013

Prepare yourselves for a blog of Jerusalem, a walk through history of food, culture, and religion! I am thrilled to finally get myself to Jerusalem on Monday....I took a train there. When I told a few local Israelis I was taking a train there, the reaction was "There's a train that goes to Jerusalem?!" News to them, there sure is. However, it turns out that the train is not the preferred mode of transportation for the locals....bus is the preferred mode and here's why; time. The train takes nearly double the time the bus takes. This is because the train takes a scenic route along the mountainside verses a straight ride down the high way. I enjoyed the train ride on the way there--it was a beautiful view, and a nice way to see Jerusalem from ... read more
