Makes me want to go!
Good blog! And you guys are just beaming in these wonderful pictures!

Nice Pics :)
I must make my way up there some time in the near future. The north does have a worse reputation for scams than the south. In some areas, ripping tourists off does seem to be a Vietnamese national past time, so be careful. The most common scam comes at the petrol station when refuelling your bike. Always make sure they zero the pump and watch the numbers carefully. Stick to the well known taxi services such as Vinasun and Mai Linh as some of the lesser known companies can be a little suspect. Some shops and traders will generally try to make a few bucks out of you, sometimes charging you double what the locals pay. Generally, once you have agreed a price, people very rarely go back on it. The Vietnamese people are still quite honourable but if you do get into any difficult situations then threaten to call the police. The word for police is 'Canh Sat'. Realistically, most of the police officers here don't speak English and won't come to your aid if the amounts are small, however, your hotel should be able to help you if you encounter any serious problems. Otherwise, don't become too paranoid. Vietnam is a wonderful country, the people are wonderful and thankfully, scams are still few and far between.

Incredible photos of those shimmering rice fields--very dreamlike. So glad you got used to those unpleasant parts you'd disliked in an earlier blog and found bliss and surprises in China. Happy travels!

Great blog, looked like a really nice hike with beautiful scenery all around. I'm not sure how I'd have handled the way down though! I suspect we may have been going back the same way! Look forward to more soon.. where are you off to next?

This was one big Buddha!

DEJA VU
Dafo in Leshan...yep...Emei Shan...yep...we also stayed in the Teddy Bear Hostel. Reading your blog is Deja Vu. Did you place your mark on the walls in the reception area? We were there in the middle of winter so the top of Emei was covered in snow...magic! Gotta say I'm amazed at the amount of vegetation on Dafo since we were there. Obviously maintenance is not regular for poor old Dafo who still keeps guard over the river.

Buddhas & Mountains
Hi, I was interested to read your account of Leshan & Emei Shan as I made a trip there with a Chinese friend in winter 2011. I've spoken to a few other people who have been & realise how lucky I was, (on Emei Shan at least), to cop such beautiful clear weather, & a bonus of snow on the ground too. Ha ha! You seem to have quickly reached the conclusion that you never really know what to expect in China! I have some photos of the amazing Buddha statue on Emei Shan on: http://s251.beta.photobucket.com/user/draftwrite/library/China-Sichuan-Winter-2011 Good luck in Vietnam.

Gorgeous!
Soooo jealous that we didn't see the babies when we went to see the pandas...probably a good job as one of us (erm, Donna!) would have probably tried to panda-nap one! We love pandas and seeing them in Chengdu is definitely up there in our most memorable experiences. Sichuan food is definitely the best of Chinese food!

On the subject of the Chinese...
Having just returned from 3 weeks in China, I enjoyed this blog, especially loved the 8 or so paragraphs following "On the subject of the Chinese...". Everything was spot on and helped me feel a little less guilty for finding it all a bit exhausting sometimes! Hope you enjoy the rest of your time there.
