27th July ’12 Seattle to Hope, British Columbia, Canada I woke to a dull throbbing in my feet which was an improvement on yesterday and we made it with our rucksacks down to the bus stop. The car rental place was about 8 miles out of the city where we were collecting our ride (God I am turning American – we have been away too long!) for the next couple of weeks. Hiring a car in the states is much cheaper than hiring one in Canada. We were going to cross the border at Sumas this time but Howard announced that first we were going to do a short side trip. Soon we were bombing along winding country lanes, with high mist covered mountains. We eventually reached the Mount Baker area and were even able to ... read more

First of all i have to say HOORAY!!!!! we have got the charger for the netbook back! It was left in Seattle so all my blogging had to be handwritten and this is why i havent posted anything for a couple of weeks and it will probably take me at least another week to catch up. 25th-26th July '12 Vancouver to Seattle, Washington U.S.A. We left Vancouver by Greyhound Bus 20 minutes later than scheduled due to the bus driver performing all his vehicle checks at least twice! – but at least we knew everything worked! It was only about 30 minutes to the border and as you couldn’t take any food across we scoffed our sandwich down. After the last Canada/USA border crossing last year I was taking no chances! This time however it was ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver July 22nd 2012

22-25th July ’12 Vancouver First thing I must say is Vancouver is a great city! We both really liked it! Saw loads and walked a million miles. We got 2 decent days out of 3 so that wasn’t so bad and we were staying in an apartment so part of one day off was a great chance to catch up with everything. We docked at Canada dock and were off the ship by 10am and greeted by the sight of lots of Canadian flags. A big city was a bit of a shock after 3 weeks in Alaska but when we arrived the streets were really quiet (it was Sunday) and we walked up hill and then down to find our hotel. We were staying on Robson Street at the Riviera Hotel, we weren’t able to ... read more

20th July ’12 Ketchikan A grey, rainy, blustery day and we have arrived in Ketchikan - The Salmon Capital of the World. We are moored up right along the Front Street in the old historic town, which is…. yes you guessed it, lined with jewellery stores and souvenir shops! Again we got off and ran the gauntlet of stalls and people holding signs offering tours at lower prices than the ship. We started the hunt for the coins and charms and found the stores had given up completely on trying to get you to try on or buy their wares, which was a godsend. In one shop they were selling lots of Sarah Palin election promotion items like fridge magnets and postcards saying things like Run Sarah Run! 2012 election and Sarah says I can see ... read more

18th July ’12 Haines and Skagway We had decadent breakfast in bed this morning! It also served as our wake up call for our first port and the chance to get off the ship. We were moored at Haines but this also served for the town of Skagway where most of the excursions went from. Thanks to research by Howard before joining the ship we were able to do our own version of the ship’s Whitepass Summit Scenic Railway with shopping time in Skagway trip and so save ourselves $100. We were even on the same ferry and train as the people from our ship, although they had priority boarding the ferry and the first 4 train carriages. We had checked with the ship’s Travel Guide where to catch the fast ferry from so we got ... read more

17th July ’12 Cruising Glacier Bay We knew from the programme (that is delivered to your cabin each night) that we would be in the National Park from 10am to 7pm and so intended to spend most of our time out on the deck – apart from cigarette breaks which would have to be in the casino bar as it was the only place you could smoke during these times. So when I went in for a fag I said to the other people there well I’m sure we will all see a lot of each other today (ha ha) and was met by stony faces and silence, well at least I tried! I did on another visit meet up with one of our friends from Illinois, she was sat at the bar drinking and chatting ... read more

15-16th July ’12 The Cruise – Leaving Seaward and on towards Glacier Bay We drove back into Seaward and before dropping the car off went up to the cruise dock to drop our rucksacks off. The two blokes at the luggage store just looked incredulous when we handed in our rucksacks and wanted to know where the rest of our bags were. I must say our little rucksacks looked a sorry sight on top of the sea of huge suitcases! Once the car was returned we were given a lift back to the ship and after being photographed and scanned we were allowed to board. As we had booked on a late deal and opted for the cabin with an obstructed view – with a note to say it had no view at all, but this ... read more

12th-15th July ’12 The Kenai Peninsula We spent the previous night in the Artic Adventures Hostel, which was owned and ran by an American lad who had come to Alaska backpacking 7 years ago, saw the place up for sale at a bargain price, bought it and had been here ever since - he had now put it back up for sale as he couldn’t face another winter! He tried several times to convince we I would really like to buy it!! The hostel was fine, apart from the 1 bathroom to 5 rooms which meant if you needed to use it, you had to leave your door open so you could dash in as soon as someone came out. As the rooms were half the price of staying anywhere else in Anchorage and we were ... read more

9th-11th Tok to Valdez, day in Valdez and then back to Anchorage There isn’t going to be much writing in this section of the blog as there is only so many ways you can describe the scenery without saying the same thing again and again. This leg of the trip involved a lot of driving but the scenery was so breath taking it made it all worthwhile. I only wish our camera could have captured the scale, breadth and depth of what we were seeing! We set off from Tok and drove along the Richardson Highway, a journey of just over 250 miles. Not long after we had set off we spotted something in the middle of the road so we slowed down and to our surprise it was a lynx!, it moved off the road ... read more

8th July ’12 Fairbanks to North Pole to Tok Before leaving this morning I had a fascinating chat with the lady (age 70) who owns the Motel we have been staying in and her friend who was just visiting from Eagle – a small village right up near the Yukon River. They were saying ‘y’all should come back visit us in the winter and see how we really live’ which led me to ask them what it was really like and how did they manage. Turns out they do still get some daylight in Fairbanks in winter and the average temperature is -40 degrees, they then showed me the little lines dangling down from a wire across the length of the motel and told me that’s so people staying can plug their cars in so the ... read more
