10th-11th Oct ’12 Bandipur After saying our goodbyes to the staff at the Hotel Orchid we began the 3 hour journey up to Bandipur, which basically retraced the bus journey to Pokhara with a quick stop at a truck stop for Bikram to get some food. He had been up driving since 7am before he picked us up and was starving poor guy. The truck stop was interesting, how he managed to weave his little car in between all these hulking trucks was truly impressive. All the truckers were eating from metal plates with big dollops of various curries and rice all scooped up with their fingers. I didn’t even attempt the loo here! Once we were nearly in Dumre there was a side road which we took winding up the mountain ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Pokhara October 7th 2012

7th Oct ‘12 The extent of our activities today was walking down our road to the taxi area, being claimed by our previous driver and then going to the Ghurkha museum. This was a very interesting place detailing the history of the Ghurkas from the start to present day. There were displays highlighting campaigns they were involved in, personal stories of extreme valour and courage, medals won, uniforms worn, lots of photos for each of the regiments. All this was accompanied by sound effects of battles and bagpipe playing. An elderly gentleman in his uniform kept appearing next to us commenting now and then on things we were looking at and he also operated the sound effects buttons. He followed us around the three floors... read more

2nd - Oct ’12 Pokhara We slept like logs and I didn’t wake up until 10 am. I pulled the curtains open but the views are still hazy, maybe tomorrow. I love just sitting out on the balcony though, just watching life going on around me and I feel so much more relaxed already. So after the wonders of a good night’s sleep we went out to find breakfast and discovered a great little place just down the road that does the most delicious pancakes, so it look like that’s going to become another regular stop for us! We walked along the main road and past the Royal Palace – you can’t see anything but the wall, and into the central area of Lakeside (the tourist part of Pokhara). It’s just one main road lined with ... read more

1st Oct ’12 Kathmandu to Pokhara After a quick brown water shower it was downstairs, settle the bill and then six of us were led to the bus station by a tiny little man we hadn’t seen before. On the road outside the main bus station was a humongous line of buses and we dodged our way past tourists, bags, people selling water, snacks and fruit and then found ourselves cut off from our man by a large van on the pavement. We couldn’t get past as the van was moving and a continuous stream of people were coming towards down both sides of it in the other direction. Eventually I forced myself through and there was no sign of our guy so I just headed along the pavement and then a little old man asked ... read more

26th-27th Sept, London to Nepal via Delhi Ok so we’re at Heathrow now and got checked in straight away, our rucksacks weighed 4.2kg and 7.5 kg so I reckon we did really well at cutting the weight down! It was another horrific overnight flight and it was packed! Once again neither of us got any sleep, this time partly due to having 2 babies and 1 small child sat in the row in front of us. However I did get to see two films – The Hunger Games (good but not as good as the book) and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (a lovely film, you can’t go wrong with a bit of Ewan after all!). We arrived in Delhi – I have no idea what time or day it was and were surprisingly ok considering ... read more

22nd – 23rd Sept ’12 JFK to LHR So we didn’t make it to Coney Island, it was going to take too long so we just mooched about instead, visited Times Square and saw the singing Naked Cowboy and the Red Indian both of whom weren’t actually naked but still caused quite a stir! Had a final visit to the Cold Stone Creamery – yum yum, but it was very quiet this time and nobody sang which was a bit of a let down. Before we knew it we were on our way to the airport. We were flying from terminal 4 which was a bit of a building site and had hardly any shops to look in, we got a bit swizzed by the duty free as we bought them from the shop before we ... read more

18th Sept ’12 York to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Today it was raining!! We were driving through the Amish farm lands of Pennsylvania and had intended to do Aaron and Jessica’s buggy ride but by the time we reached the farm it was tanking down and a buggy ride didn’t sound as much fun! We did spot a few buggies around and about and lots of Witness style barns but it just wasn’t the same in the rain. So we carried on along a very complex route to get to Philadelphia Airport. At one point it was raining so hard you couldn’t see the road at all which was a bit hairy! However it eased off to a mild torrent and we made it to the motel ok. 19th September ’12 Philadelphia After we checked out of the ... read more

11-12th Sept ’12 Atlanta, Georgia We drove through Mississippi, a slight wrong turn into Arkansas then through Alabama (which was really green, with loads of forests) to eventually arrive in Atlanta. The whole purpose of coming here was to go to the Uproar Festival in Atlanta the next day. We did a practise run to the venue as we gave up on the idea of trying to get there by public transport and hopefully we will be able to find our way back again in the dark tomorrow! The next day we woke up and got up late and then in the afternoon drove to Aaron’s Amphitheatre for the gig. On our way in we were told that the Lawn was closed (this is the grass area at the back of the amphitheatre and basically the ... read more

8th Sept ’12 New Orleans to Memphis, Tennessee Despite my misgivings Howard managed the drive to Memphis in one go. I think the fact that it was cloudy definitely helped, it’s also cooler so that helps too. We checked into our motel 6 – which had appauling reviews but is in a decent location only a 2 mile bus journey into the town centre and is relatively cheap. The motel is bizarre, it is full of young people all swaggering around or standing in groups by their trucks, god alone knows if we will get any sleep tonight! Howard decided he was feeling ok so we caught the bus into the town, had some tea and then hit Beale Street. What a fantastic place! It’s not very big but has a great atmosphere, there are bands ... read more

4th Sept ’12 Houston to New Orleans, Louisiana A very long drive today! After crossing the border into Louisiana we stopped at a visitor centre for a break and were given lots of leaflets and maps by one of the really helpful lady on the desk. Then we drove through Cajun country and into Plantation country passing towns like Lafayette, Baton Rouge and Blue Bayou – it was like an episode of True Blood! Then we were driving over the swamp lands and maybe it’s because of all the recent rains due to Issac but it really stank! Then we were back into heavy traffic and entering the New Orleans area. Sadly our motel is miles out of the city centre, on a busy main road with nothing much near it but a derelict hotel next ... read more
