5th-7th July ’12 Fairbanks So we left Denali and drove along the highway past more forests and over rivers, leaving the big mountains behind. We stopped off for a break at the settlement of Nenana, which was really just one road with a few small houses, an RV park and a couple of tourist shops, at the end of the road was the railway station/museum. It was a very strange place, there was hardly a soul about, I guess it was like a pioneer camp without the pioneers. This seems to be the norm for Alaska though, these tiny little ramshackle settlements. When we arrived in Fairbanks that felt like a larger version of the same thing. Obviously Fairbanks – The Golden Heart City, is a city and so has a substantial population and has all ... read more

2nd July ’12 Anchorage to Denali After flying over ridge upon ridge of snow covered mountain peaks we landed at Ted Stevens Airport at 5am Alaskan time (3am Hawaii time!). We had an hour’s wait until the car hire place opened and desperately tried to keep ourselves awake, having once again only managed the odd 10 minutes here and there of head nodding then jolting sleep. Anyway we finally got our car for the next two weeks and headed off into Anchorage for supplies. The first thing that struck up about Anchorage was the semi-circle of rugged mountains dominating the town and straight away Howard’s eyes lit up. Being Howard he had decided we were just going to drive the 300 miles up to Denali straight away rather than stay in Anchorage for a night to ... read more

26th – 30th June ’12 Leaving The Big Island and back to Oahu and Waikiki Beach, our last few days in Hawaii. Another 48 seater plane back to Honolulu Airport and then another interminable bus journey back to Waikiki! This time we are staying at The Royal Grove, one of the original 1950’s hotels, which hasn’t had anything done to it since then I reckon! It’s a great location, only one block from the beach and close to all the shops and restaurants and for Waikiki are bargin price – which is why we are staying there rather than the lovely Aloha Surf! I sometimes think it’s almost better never to have a taste of luxury, as that way you don’t know what you’re missing. Anyway our little pink hotel is surrounded by huge modern skyscrapers ... read more

24 & 25th June ’12 Kailua-Kona For the first time we actually managed to visit a couple of places and learn a bit about Hawaiian culture. On the first day we headed north along the coast highway past lots and lots of lava fields. For miles there were various names and dates picked out in white stones, at first I thought they were memorials and some may have been but the majority turned out to be a kind of graffiti saying things like Gazza loves Shazza (only with more Hawaiian sounding names). We were heading to Pu’ukohola Heiau – The Temple on the Hill of the Whale, a war temple which was built 1790-91 by the Kamehameha l , who became the King of the Islands. Prophecy told that Kamehameha was destined to rule all the ... read more

21st continued… Once again it’s raining! But not to be deterred we arrive at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and called at the visitor’s centre, looked at the exhibits and picked up a map of the crater drives and look outs. We also found out that due to volcanic activity you cannot drive right the way round the Kilauea Volcano anymore, but the lookouts were still open so off we went to find them. Our first stop was at the end of the road, at the Jaggar Museum which has fabulous views over the Kilauea Caldera. This is a vast area of old lava flows and the Halema’uma’u crater which was smoking away. It was a great site, not as impressive as Mt. Bromo on Java, but great never the less. It had also stopped raining, ... read more

20th June ’12 Maui to Hawaii – The Big Island Well what an exciting start to our visit to the Big Island! We dropped the hire car off and when we were on the shuttle to the airport the driver asked us which airline we were travelling with, when we said Go! He just started laughing. He then said ‘have you flown with them before?’ yes we said, as we had from Kauai to Maui and ok it was a small plane (48 seater) but so what… he then went on about the high winds we had been having and said ‘oh you’re in for a treat’, we just looked puzzled. Our ‘terminal’ was a sort of a shed away from the main building and when we walked in there were only a handful of people ... read more

16th May ’12 Goodbye Kauai, hello Maui Same routine – airport, flight, car rental and drive to the accommodation. This time we are staying in a B&B, but it advertised the rooms as studios with their own verandahs. This is indeed true and the room is lovely, however the rooms are on the ground floor and the owners live above, this would not be a problem except for the fact that the place is run by the original Stepford Wife! Complete with an ‘I’m only a little girl’ voice, this would not be a problem but for the list of rules, including no loud noise at all at any time and more importantly no smoking anywhere on the property – this wouldn’t be so bad but they have large grounds which are well away from the ... read more

12th – 16th June ’12 Kauai After our very brief flight we were soon landing at Lihue Airport of Kauai. We picked up our rucksacks and walked outside to the car rental office, a bit of paperwork and a short shuttle bus drive and we were at the Enterprise office and in our hire car –a Dodge, which made me laugh. We found our accommodation – the Kauai Sands quite easily, it is a kind of giant motel, has a beach with very, very big rough waves and warning signs and a pool which has seen better days. Our room is nice, clean and has a fridge but the bed is full of springs. After dropping of our stuff we went out for a look around and found the Coconut Grove shopping centre just a couple ... read more

11th June '12 Oahu, Hawaii After no sleep we arrived totally shattered at a virtually deserted Honolulu Airport. We got our bags, cleared customs and immigration with no problems and found the bus stop and were soon on our way to Waikiki Beach. Despite the tiredness we were both really excited!! We drove through the modern high rise city of Honolulu and into the modern high rise hotels which fill Waikiki but the sea was a beautiful blue! We had our noses pressed to the windows and our mouths gaping as we passed millions of restaurants selling all manner of tempting food!! We got off the bus and after a short walk in the wrong direction found our road – right where we got off!! Ah well we were knackered. Much to my astonishment our hotel ... read more

27th May Goodbye Motorhead Motor Home That morning we had the task of packing up, restoring the motor home to its former glory, giving away various bits and bobs to fellow campers and making up a big carrier bag of food to give to the Aboriginal people at the riverside in Alice. When we pulled up at the parking area none of the locals were in sight so we left the food near a bench for them in the hopes it would be of some use. Howard went up to the bank to see if anything could be done about the £250 the ATM had not given us but had taken out of our account, he came back with the news that they said they couldn’t do anything and it would have to be sorted out ... read more
