RAIN GALORE!! When we arrived in the seaside town of Forster, via a nice drive through Booti Booti National Park, we checked the weather forecast and learnt that there was going to be heavy rain for a whole week. Nice! We decided to check in at the local caravan park for a bit of shelter and the use of hot showers for the next three days.It was so great to be able to put up our tarpaulin and step outside the van without getting drenched right away. The volume of the rain really was incredible. I wouldn’t have thought it physically possible to rain non-stop for so long. Even the 100m walk from our campsite to the bathroom was a bit of a mission at times. So whenever the downpour changed to a drizzle for 10 ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Port Stephens » Shoal Bay April 13th 2012

Friday 13th, eek! But nothing untoward happened in our world. The lovely bay of Port Stephens is totally charming. Its unofficial capital is Nelson Bay, which is also the ‘dolphin capital of Australia’, and there are several other little towns and pretty beaches dotted around. We based ourselves around Shoal Bay and when we first arrived it was already pretty dark. So we parked up and got into the back of the van, wondering what our view in the morning would be like. It was lovely! We were up on a hill and woke up sunshine pouring through the leaves of the trees and glimpses of the sea sparkling below. Truly wonderful. For once it was very easy to live completely in the moment and not think about much else :-) After brekkie, we headed down ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Newcastle April 10th 2012

I had heard Newcastle mentioned a lot and was vaguely aware that it was a city north of Sydney, but that sums up all my previous knowledge of it. I was intrigued to see what it was actually like and it was only when I started reading about its history that I learnt that Newcastle had had Australia’s most destructive recorded earthquake in 1989. However, the city took that opportunity to rebrand itself. This former steel town (where the worst-behaved convicts were sent!) is the largest coal export harbour in the world. It certainly has a very industrial feel to it and the coal industry is very evident (in fact, yesterday’s newspaper stated that the coal boom is causing traffic jams) but the various rejuvenation projects have paid off.The city has flair and an up and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Terrigal April 3rd 2012

We hadn’t really made a plan beyond Picton, but when our friends Tracey and Jason said they would be in Terrigal for a couple of days, we thought that would be a great spot to visit. As it turned out, Terrigal is lovely! It has made it on to my ‘wonderful places’ list! It’s a beautiful, bustling but chilled beachside hamlet where time seems to stand still. On our first evening we caught up with T&J over a yummy Thai dinner and the next day was spent cycling (it sure is hilly around there!), checking out Wamberal (a nearby suburb of the city of Gosford), swimming/snorkeling in the ocean and browsing the many shops on Terrigal esplanade. Dean and Jason went fishing together while I did a yoga class – at an amazing Buddhist retreat in ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Picton April 1st 2012

Neither of us had been to Picton before so it was a long overdue visit. It’s a super friendly dropzone with a great setup. We did a couple of jumps – one freefly jump to blow out the cobwebs and a wingsuit jump with our friend Sarah. Unfortunately Sarah’s helmet wasn’t done up properly and she lost it as soon as we were out of the plane. We’re just glad everyone's safe. As Sarah said, it only hurt the pride and the pocket. Thanks Sydney Skydivers for making us so welcome for a couple of days. It was great to see familiar faces and meet new friends.... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney March 25th 2012

We decided to stay in Bondi for our first couple of days in Sydney. It was very similar to St Kilda (beachy, funky, lots of shops and restaurants) so we felt instantly at home! Instead of sleeping in the van, we thought it would be nice to stay at a hostel for a couple of nights. Big mistake! We had to walk through the smoking terrace to get into the hostel and, once inside, it was filthy to the point of being a health hazard. We stayed one night anyway but by the morning I had decided it was time to leave. A complaint about the blood in the bathroom and the yelling until 3am (both true) as well as a story of a cockroach running over my pillow (possibly not so true, but the woman ... read more

First of all, many congratulations to my fabulous sister Yvette for completing her degree in biology! What an achievement.Nice work sis! Thursday 22 March has been a much anticipated date as it’s the day that we met up with my great friend Peter, who came over from the States for a conference in Sydney. We managed to time our arrival in Sydney perfectly with the last day of the conference and immediately drove out to the Blue Mountains for a weekend camping trip. We set up camp in the Bents Basin State Conservation Area at the edge of the Blue Mountain National Park. Nice work, boys, for putting up the tent in the dark! It was beautiful waking up to the morning mist and dew-covered spider webs. What’s more, the blue skies promised a lovely sunny ... read more
