We woke up to a chilly, overcast and drizzly morning. Luckily, the weather cleared swiftly and we were slapping on the SPF30! Hobart weather is almost as unpredictable as Melbourne’s. We started the day with a visit to the Sunday Market at the Hobart Showground. Dean managed to find us an awesome folding camping table. Yay, we needed one of those! After that, we drove into central Hobart to check out the city. We started off at the famous Salamanca Place, a lovely terrace with Australian colonial architecture that houses a number of restaurants, bars, art galleries and beautiful craft shops. It’s definitely the art hub of the city and has a lovely vibe. Just a stone’s throw from there is the marina, from where we took a cruise around the bay. Back on land, we ... read more

Dean took an early morning walk to Platypus Bay, hoping to see some of those lovely critters. No luck this time though… maybe next time. We then hit the road to Hobart, with a couple of stops on the way: Russell Falls is a stunning fairytale-like multi-tiered waterfall and the Tall Trees Walk took us through a rainforest of mighty swamp gums (eucalyptus regnans) which grow up to 400 years old. We even had the opportunity to use a clinometer to calculate the height of one of these beautiful giants. We made it to Hobart in the afternoon and were warmly greeted at our campground by… lots of very friendly ducks!!! These were soon joined by heaps of rabbits too. I had a bit of a meltdown that evening. This trip has been such a long ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Lake St Clair February 3rd 2012

It was time to explore the lovely Cradle Mountain / Lake St Clair National Park. We decided to take the ferry Cynthia Bay to Echo Point and then do the 3.5 hour hike back to the camping ground. You could’ve knocked us over with a feather when we realised our $70 ferry ride took all of 15 minutes! Come on guys, make the beautiful Tassie outdoors more accessible! On our hike back through woodland and rainforest, we came across the native woolly tea tree, an echidna, a wallaby… and many mosquitoes! We very much hoped to see a platypus too, but perhaps better luck next time. It was a lovely, peaceful hike with a lunch break on the lakeshore. At about 200m, Lake St Clair is the deepest natural lake in Australia.... read more

We woke up to see the mist rolling over the forest-covered hills and, after breakfast, went for a walk down by the stream. I can’t imagine why the people of Rosebery don’t spend all their spare time there… We then spent most of the rest of the day in transit. We drove via Zeehan (“bugger all to see” as the Lonely Planet describes it – and they’re right!) to Strahan (pronounced “Strawn”, and an absolutely gorgeous upmarket village) to Queenstown. When we travelled the South Island of New Zealand a few years ago, I completely fell in love with Queenstown but this one doesn’t do its namesake any justice, so we continued on to Derwent Bridge and found a stunning camping spot at Lake St Clair. It’s a beautiful national park with plenty of walks and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Stanley February 1st 2012

What a lovely sunny morning! After a leisurely start, we climbed the Nut. It is a 152m high volcanic table-top formation that is about 13 million years old. It was a very steep, but only 15 minute, climb to the top. We walked the 2km circuit which boasts impressive views of the coast, village and surrounding countryside. We took the chairlift back down before heading down to Stanley Wharf where Dean did a bit of fishing.Alas, no bites today… We drove a substantial distance in the afternoon, all the way to Rosebery where we intended to stay the night. This mining village didn’t feel particularly safe, with everyone driving by in utes staring at the strangers, so we found a small rest area outside the village to park our van. Out came the sandalwood sticks as ... read more

What felt like day one (but, we suppose, is technically already day two) started off pretty cool. I got dressed in thermals and a woolen hat… but by mid-morning it was a lovely 20-something degrees. We decided to “do” Tassie anti-clockwise so we headed West through the seaside towns of Ulverstone, Burnie and Wynyard, to Stanley. Stanley is a fisherman’s village with a population of less than 500. Think old Victorian style, with Ye Olde Ice Cream Shoppe and many many cottages. It has an impressive rock formation backdrop called “The Nut” which we plan to climb tomorrow. It’s been VERY windy since we’ve arrived in Tassie… but the fact that it’s sunny makes that ok.... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Devonport January 30th 2012

Day one has arrived!!!After several days of early mornings, late nights, lugging furniture out of the flat and making trips to the storage facility, we are sleep deprived and exhausted… but there’s a sense of excitement as we say a fond farewell to our St Kilda flat (sweet home for three great years) and drive down the road to Port Melbourne to board the Spirit of Tasmania for the nine hour journey across the Bass Strait. Our storage room is filled to the brim (as we closed the roller door, it skimmed past the washing machine with half an inch to spare), and our van is set up beautifully (thanks so much for your work on the kitchen and shelves, Gwany) and our odometer marks 208,000 km as our starting point. We headed back home to Hunua for the next three days. We were horrified when a lunatic overtook us on the motorway and the next day a crack appeared in the windscreen of our borrowed car... Thanks for being so understanding, Andrew and Gina! We had a great time catching up with Zach, Rachel, Paul & Heather and Michael & Holly. And the three kittens that Rachel and Zach are fostering! On Christmas day we got the whole family together for a lovely lunch and fun times in the pool. We were so pleased to have another full day to spend with Zach before it was time to fly back to Melbourne. It was sad saying goodbye to everyone, but we look forward to the next trip!... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Coromandel » Whitianga December 22nd 2011

In the morning, we visited Hot Water Beach and enjoyed sitting around in the termal water pools. We couldn't leave without paying a visit to the fantastic Moko Artspace which sells art/sculpure/jewellery etc by local artists. We gave a couple of German hitchhikers a ride back to Hahei (90% of the travellers we met are from Germany!) before taking the ferry over to Whitianga. This lovely little town is full of quirky shops and cafés, so we spent most of the afternoon exploring. Later, we visited Cook's Beach and North Beach - but it was a bit too cold to swim in the sea!... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Coromandel Peninsula » Pauanui December 21st 2011

Pauanui isn't far from Tairua by boat, but we decided to take the long way round by car. We checked out the massive baches (ie holiday houses) on the waterways, did some shopping and grabbed lunch before heading back to Tairua. With the tide coming in, it was the perfect time to do some kayaking before having another chilled out evening at our backpacker's, including dinner in the "treehouse". Later on, Dean went pipi hunting... I'm still not convinced these pipis actually exist!... read more
