All last week was my school´s anniversary and thus there were lots of games and competitions between the three alianzas. The three alianzas represented the school colors: Blue (water), Orange (earth), White (air) and there was everything from sports events to a comedy show sort of thing to dances to a parade!... read more

pics! Just a few pictures of around the house, as promised! "there is no better or worse, only different" -YFU In case it isn’t evident... I’m having a great time! And so far I’ve found I only really miss three things (aside from you all and my pets in the states of course); -milk... here the milk tastes kinda funny. it’s not too bad but I miss organic milk from home in the states -rain... there isn't any. and it’s very very dusty (it reminds me of the county fair) -poetry... it’s a bit frustrating not to be able to write, but I can’t because my mind is mixed up... I think half in English half in Spanish and I dream mostly in Spanish now and it’s all pretty confusing.... read more

I was woken up on the night bus by a box of packaged breakfast things being dropped into my lap and whilst drinking my pineapple juice box I opened the curtains aaaaaand DESERT!!!! It was really really stunning... basically: desert... desert... desert... mountains! On both sides! I spent the rest of the ride just watching out the window- it was incredibly beautiful.... Just completely stunning, I mean we saw a bit of the desert when we visited my sister Laura last year... but it became so much more real when I was looking at it and knowing that this is my home for the next six months! I wish I had taken pictures for you all to see, but I was so awestruck I didn’t think to get out the camera. Two of the other exchange ... read more

(SORRY FOR THE LAG TIME IN UPDATES... BUT I HAVE INTERNET ON MY LAPTOP NOW SO I'LL TRY TO GET THE BLOG CAUGHT UP!) After some of the students were sent off with their families and a few more were put on busses, those of us who remained went to lunch at a chinese restaurant around the corner. After that we went back to the YFU Chile headquarters and I think a few more were sent off to busses at that point, then we went to drive around Santiago with some volunteers. There was a ton of traffic because its the end of winter break down here and everyone was out at the Zoo in Santiago I guess.... when we finally got through, we went up this little mountain-hill thing that is the highest point in ... read more

The rest of orientation was pretty fun, and here are some more pictures... as promised! Some of them are of the Cueca dancers they brought in as a surprise for us, which was really fun. It was a little sad leaving because a lot of us started to get close- I think it’s a shared experience sort of thing that makes you get attached so quickly... we were all sort of alone together I guess. At the end of Orientation we headed back into Santiago for some of us to meet our host families (those who lived in or around Santiago). It was really really cool to watch, as we sat there on opposite sides of the room, waiting for names to be called so that the families and students could get up and meet in ... read more

So! I am in Chile... at orientation somewhere near Santiago (they said an hour and a half but it took us three... but we did drive by some of the same things a couple times so I think we were lost at some point). Being an exchange student has yet to feel real to me, it’s sort of more like being on a surreal vacation. Or maybe more like being kidnapped by really friendly people. WOW one of the other girls from my room just sort of exploded in... she seems to do that very naturally, she’s very bubbly and super-friendly (ironically for those of you who know the Louisa that was in falmouth... she’s a German girl named Louisa!).... These exchange students are a lot of fun! Anyway, I think I’m learning what it’s ... read more

I have a host family! i got the info a few days ago, and i had a brief conversation with them on the phone (the e-mail wasn't working) and so i know a little bit... I will have four sisters and one brother (ages 24, 23, 19, 19 and 17) and my sister Catalina (17) just came back from exchange in the US, so she speaks english. I found my sisters on facebook, and have communicated a little with Catalina and has informed me that I will be living with three dogs (what a relief!!! i was so worried about how i would survive if they didn't have pets! although my mom keeps telling me that they're going to be three big mean guard dogs...). According to YFU my host mom, Antonia is a business woman ... read more

So! I have news!!! I am going to Copiapó, Chile and will be attending El Colegio Cervantino! Copiapó is the capital of the Atacama region (aka: im gonna be in the desert!) and here are a few little facts about it (mostly thanks to wikipedia): -Copiapó is mainly a mining region -it was inhabited by the Incas before the Spanish took over -it receives about 12 mm of rain per year (yikes!) -Copiapó is about five or six hours north of La Serena (Laura's city) -it is about 35 miles inland from the Pacific in a "fertile valley" -the population is around 130,000 people -and Copiapó had a UFO sighting in 1864! I don't yet have the rest of my host family info... EDIT: evidently they didn't say it was in the mail, that was just ... read more
