Hi everyone, today is another one of our travel days. The distances between these towns in outback Australia are hundreds of kilometres apart and a simple drive down the road can easily be in the hundreds of kilometres. Today is one of those days. The trip from Coober Pedy to Alice Springs is 699 kilometres. Basically driving time is 7 hours on an average of 100km per hour. We left Coober Pedy just after 9am after filling up with diesel and water. We even had to pay for the water. It was 20cents for 40 litres. Now given we have driven so much already my expectations of this leg were somewhat confused. We're we in for a boring drive, was it going to take forever and what types of towns were in our path? First let's ... read more

Hi everyone, big day today so i apologise now for writing so much. Today was a day of mixed speeds. We had a very slow morning. No hurry to get up. Plenty of time to shower, go for a walk to the local servo for coffees and no hurry to come back. Laying in the sun was the order of the morning. I kept blocking the sun from Tracey and she was not happy. Such a great morning. Half the park checked out and they were predominatly large vans and their work horses ( Xavier was happy because he is seeing lots of Rangers). Not seeing many Hi Lux's pulling vans. We had a very light lunch. Tracey is still complaining that she has not been able to find any cream buns. Boy she is annoying ... read more

Day 5 - The Red Centre - Oodnadatta to Coober Pedy Today we drive from Oodnadatta to Coober Pedy. This is only a 190km trip which will take about two hours based on our previous two days driving style, remembering Xavier is still in the lead car. We were hoping that the roads won't be as rough as they were the day before. We were lucky. Not too many corrugations and not a lot of rocks on the road. At the beginning of the trip we went past some terrain that was so barren not even the local sparse vegetation would grow. The land was littered with dark pebble type rocks. No chance even the local wildlife would survive here. It is also important to note that some of these rocks were littering the road. This ... read more

Day 4 The Red Centre - Travel from Marree to Oodnadatta Hi all, today we drove from Marree to the town of Oodnadatta. Again it was not a rushed morning. We left Marree at about 9am after buying some freshly baked rolls from the Marree roadhouse. The Hema 4x4 GPS told us we had just over 400 km to go and it was going to take us about 8 hours. We took off to the west with the road being in reasonable condition and the surrounding landscape was continuing to be desert boring. The one thing that we noticed is that there was a proliferation of bores and springs. It is interesting to understand what this meant. Even though the landscape looked normal and dry there were an untold number of bores and natural springs. We ... read more

Day 3 The red centre. Note we have been off the grid and out of reception for two days now. So this is catchup. Ok. Now today is Day 3. We have seen all we need to see in Broken Hill. We could have spent days and days seeing museums and art galleries yesterday but the group were not interested in what the grandchildren would call boring. So today was a travel day. I wanted us to all get up really early to have an early start but I was voted down by everyone so instead of everyone getting out of bed at 5 am, as I was, they slowly surfaced between 7 and 8 am. I wasn't terribly fussed as I had not booked accommodation for day three and wherever we ended up was going ... read more

Hi everyone, today we played tourists. We started off on a Mine tour at the Daydream mine which is located just outside of Silverton township. OMG. This mine was old school. Lets just say safety and OH&S were a little behind the times but we enjoyed our two hours there. We found ourselves walking down 100 feet below the ground and in spots we needed to crouch to get into the shafts. The shafts are being kept together by timber posts and there were no lights underground. We were relying on the quivering lights of our unstable safety hats. I got a little claustraphobic in one spot but very little you can do when you are 100feet below ground and you don't know the way up. My son Paul was saved a number of times as ... read more

Hi all, this was day 1 of our trip to the Red Centre. A big day by any measure. We finished our packing last night and we started our journey at 5.30am from Sunbury. It was not a very cold morning but on our way we encountered rain, rain and more rain. It was even still spitting in Mildura and that was 500km from Melbourne. The total trip was 800km and with two stops, one for morning tea and the second for lunch we took exactly 10hours to get to Broken Hill. Morning tea was at a town called Sea Lake. Now we could not be further from the sea if you tried. Sea lake is in the heart of the Mallee wheat belt and about 300 km inland from our start. It was called this ... read more

Hi everyone, we here we go again. Tonina and I are going on another 4X4 driving trip to the Red Centre of Australia. We will be taking our trusty Troop Carrier (Troopy), which by the way sleeps two comfortably in its expandable roof. We will be travelling with our son Paul, his wife Lisa and our three grandchildren. Also on this trip will be my sister and Tonina's brother and for those who don't know they are married to each other (in other words brother and sister married brother and sister). Anyhow with these three four wheel drives leaving on this trip we will be away from home for 16 days and in that time we will be travelling over 5,500 kilometers round trip. We will be travelling to the centre of Australia through mining country ... read more

Day 5 Today is the last day of the rally. We have woken up to a beautiful sunny day with no clouds in the sky. The town is an old copper mining town that was in operation in the late 1800's. A beautiful setting for one pub, one school and a milk bar. A nice place to come back to and visit. Today we drive from Blinman to Hawker to Orroroo to Peterborough to Auburn and then to Adelaide. Tonight we have an end of rally party and tomorrow we drive another 700km back to Melbourne. Well that was the plan. We got through all those towns without mishap but as we were approaching our final destination the heavens open up to torrential rain. We got soaked just transferring our camping stuff from the Mystery Box ... read more

Day 4 Today we are heading to a town called Blinman. We head off from William Creek to Maree and then through the Flinders ranges and end up in the small town of Blinman. After the 100 km we had a chance to view lake eyre south . Lots of salt at its edges. An experience to see water in this lake at this time of year. The total kms to drive today is 531km on dirt roads. It looks like we will get to our destination in the dark. The town of Marree is so small it had a roadside petrol and diesel pump as well as one roadside shop which looked more like a tin shed. We ended up getting a flat tyre with 150 to go. The tyre was punctured by the sharp ... read more
