Europe September 20th 2015

September 20, 2015 Today we walked fromCarrion to Los Templarios. It was rather in eventful which we need to be grateful for. The country side was typical Saskatchewan and Alberta. Lots of farming land, lots flat and some rolling hills I am grateful for many things on this trip. I couldn't do this without my walking poles. They continue to support me into stability particularly over the rocky terrain. With them I am able to propel myself faster to catch Terri when I stop to take a picture or two, I am grateful that these legs carry me well. It is surprising, maybe not for some, that these bones anduscles are getting use to the constant walking and carry on the back pack. Mostly I grateful to have a walking partner that I can usually keep ... read more

September 19, 2015 On to Carrion de Los Condos The walk was about half at the riversides of the Rio Ucieza which was beautiful and quiet. The other was on a path beside the road. It was a challenge to find the divergent path and in the beginning one had to have faith that we were on the right trail. About half way through the walk we visited the Santa Maria la Virgin Blanc church which was built by the Knights Templar in the 12 century. We arrived in Carrion requiring a beer to quench our thirst. It was a pleasant day discovering the town of 2200 people. It was once 10,000 strong. We attended a beautiful concert at the church followed by mass. We received the Pilgrams Blessing which was moving. The nuns provided a ... read more

September 18, 2015 It is only 6 above this morning. Cold to walk. I thought Spain would have been warm everyday but........ Walking today from Castrojerz to Formista. Although it started out so cold, after about 1.5 km on a gentle walk, we walked up about 100 meters on a very steep incline. The was a great warm up for sure but the most dramatic part was the vistas from above to the valley and watching the sunrise. Pictures cannot capture the pure beauty. It turned out to be a beautiful day. ... read more

September 17, It was a bit cool this morning at about 9 degrees but it warmed up nicely for the last half of the 20 km. the wind was strong but we were grateful we had no rain. Yesterday was NOT nice to walk in. The road was a bit mucky from yesterday but over all a very pleasant walk. This afternoon we had tapas and visited a couple of churches which have been converted to museums. Unusual . Tomorrow will be a bit longer journey but we are nearing the half way. Good night. ... read more

September 16 Rain and 59 winds. Not a pleasant day for sure across the Meseta. The road to the summit as well across the top seemed endless, particularly dealing with the issue of holding your balance against the wind. Arrived safely and tried to warm up with a shower and climbing into bed for a bit. This is a sleepy town with very little but is convenient on the trail. Taps in our room and SOUP for dinner. ... read more

Europe » Spain » Castile & León » Burgos September 16th 2015

September 14,15 It was a small walk into Burgos. The country part was ok but a lot of it was along the road. Once I'm the city we wee able to take a gentle walk along the river park and I will share some pictures. Burgos is a city of about 200,000 so quite manageable. It is however built along the river and provides for a long walk to your destination. The city has several bronze statues many of which pay tribute to the pilgrims. We spent 2 evenings in Burgos, time to see part of the city and rest our feet somewhat. We visited the Cathedral which is well worth the 2+ hours. We also ent to the Castile which was a waste of time. Napoleon destroyed a good portion and there has been no ... read more

September 13,Sunday. We started off the day from VillaFranca de Montes de Oca at 6:30 am. We spent the evening on bunk beds, only 9 of us in the room and blessed there were only minor snoring through the evening. The day was a very cold walk. This is the first time I didn't get to short sleeves in the first hour or two. Sunrise is after 7:30 so walking in the dark up hill through a rocky river bed in the forest was a challenge. The good news is there were several others on the trail. You probably ask why at 6:30. Well when the fellow bunkers start rousing at 5 it doesn't let you sleep. One may as well join them. Once we were closer to the summit the sun was giving us some ... read more
