TUESDAY 12 OCTOBER - Part 8 Mileage 31583 - 490 miles yesterday - 2191 overall Alarm set for 0745 hours. A lay in for us. A good nights sleep. We checked out €145.10. Our friends arrived at 0830 and we made our way on foot into the town again. Breakfast was at a restaurant they knew very well and we had juice and coffee, boiled eggs, bread with ham, cheese and jam. Not sure what the total was but we paid €20. Walked back up to the hotel and saw a local man in traditional dress which apparently isn’t unusual. Popped into a local Spar shop and bought six bottles of water, €2.58. Managed to drive out the “in“, so caused some chaos. Then went to our friends shop and had a good look around there ... read more

SUNDAY 10 OCTOBER - Part 6 Alarm set for 0700 hours Mileage 30766 - 320 miles yesterday - 1374 overall Breakfast was a mini brioche, plain omelette, toast, coffee and water. We talked with Neal over breakfast. We left the hotel at approximately 0830 hours. I started the driving to get out of the town, then Pat took over at 0900 hours on the motorway. It was only a short drive from the hotel to the motorway, so we must have negotiated most of Bucharest last night, which was very convenient. The weather was gloomy and 8°C. By 0930 hours we were driving along the motorway with the Carpathian mountain range to our right, capped with snow. Lots of stray dogs around and at 0932 hours Arad was 443 kilometres. We were now travelling towards Sibiu, ... read more

I checked out of the hotel and they had missed the drinks at the bar last night, so I had a further 10 YTL to pay. 7°C on the car. We left the hotel at 0758 hours. We found our way to the Turkey/Bulgaria border in no time and went through fairly quickly, showing our Passports. At the Bulgarian side we again showed our passports and they took a quick look into the car, but no big deal. We had to purchase a Vignette (Road Tax) which cost €10 for 7 days. You display this in your car window to ... read more

FRIDAY 8 OCTOBER Alarm set for 0700 hrs Up to breakfast, the miserable lad was on. çay, cheese, olives, bread and jam. Took our stuff out to the car. Then paid our bill. The evening meal had been included in the rate along with breakfast, so I only had a further 6YTL to pay for the 2 diet cokes. Car mileage 30059 (-29392) 667 miles so far The hotel sign said 8 October 0818 hrs and 6°C, as we departed, with Pat driving. As we drove along the D770 there were communities along the roadside in the distance. Clumps of houses, but they did not appear to have any gardens or even apparent boundary defining territory around the property. Also, no vegetable plots, which we would have expected, maintaining self sufficiency in such a rural area. ... read more

THURSDAY 7 OCTOBER Alarm set for 0700 hours. 24°C on the car. Up showered, packed and on the road, for real now. Terra firma all the way (apart from the ferry across the English Channel). Pat set off and we stopped for petrol, at 0757 hrs, 100.O1 YTL, which was just over half a tank. They record your registration number against the transaction. Petrol is 3.66 YTL per litre, so it’s expensive. YTL to the pound is about 2.27. Not much traffic about and initially we were following the coast road eastwards, heading for the motorway, to go north. We swapped drivers about 0920. We stopped at a motorway cafe and had a local breakfast, 2 Nescafe’s, water, olives, boiled eggs, jam, flatbreads, cheeses, good simple fare. Cost 25 YTL. The petrol station had a prayer ... read more

WEDNESDAY 6 OCTOBER, 2010. Alarm set for 0615 hours. We needed to be up and back to Nicosia for 0800 hrs if we could. The Dome Hotel was obviously a very grand place in it’s day, but isn’t at it’s best just now. It has a Casino, which I would guess was pretty smart. Breakfast was from 0700 and we were down about that time. Pat had some cereal, I had some toast and coffee. While Pat was finishing breakfast I went to pay the bill, but my usual credit card wouldn't work. I used another which was OK, cost 193 YTL. Back to the room to collect our belongings. Then off. At the car park to the Hotel the gate was locked so I had to go back into the reception to get someone to ... read more

Setting the scene - October 2010 A quick update first, we have now been living in Pegeia (pronounced Peyia)since December, 2009. We had a heatwave over this summer and enjoyed several of our friends and family visiting for holidays from more Northerly climes. When we left the UK and took four months to drive over to Cyprus, the car was only one year old and did not require it's first (UK) MOT until 18 October, 2010. At which time, as we did not wish to register it in Cyprus, it would no longer have valid insurance. As the summer of 2010 rushed past Pat and I had a discussion and decided that our only sensible option was to drive the car back to England, sell it, fly back and purchase a car locally. This would then ... read more

Well, it’s been a couple of months since I have blogged, so I am trying to think of what needs mentioning to update everyone. I suppose one of the key things to mention, is the continuing wonderful weather. There has been the odd spell of cooler times and we have seen some rain, but the average daytime temperature at the moment is about 22°C. Sitting in direct sunlight on the patio the temperature gets up to about 35°C. So we are still wearing shorts and T-shirts in the day time. The evenings are cooler and if you go out at night you really need jeans and a thicker top. The locals are wearing thick coats and jumpers, which we find slightly amusing. I don’t doubt they have their thoughts about us as well. My parents are ... read more

The 24th September, 2009 was one year on, from when our journey started. What a wonderful year, with many and varied experiences. They say travel broadens the mind. I agreed with the sentiment before and even more so, now. We had decided to celebrate the day, by having a day out and visiting the monastery at Kykkos. Having looked at the map, we decided to go via Polis, not the most obvious route, but some of the roads in the mountains, we were not sure about. We set off just after nine, and headed North to Polis. The drive was uneventful and we headed East from Polis in the direction of Pafos forest. Our objectives, were to see Cedar valley, visit Kykkos monastery and find Archbishop Makarios’ tomb. The area is mountainous and the road is ... read more
