View from our room in the Continental hotel SUNDAY 10 OCTOBER - Part 6
Alarm set for 0700 hours
Mileage 30766 - 320 miles yesterday - 1374 overall
Breakfast was a mini brioche, plain omelette, toast, coffee and water.
We talked with Neal over breakfast.
We left the hotel at approximately 0830 hours. I started the driving to get out of the town, then Pat took over at 0900 hours on the motorway.
It was only a short drive from the hotel to the motorway, so we must have negotiated most of Bucharest last night, which was very convenient.
The weather was gloomy and 8°C.
By 0930 hours we were driving along the motorway with the Carpathian mountain range to our right, capped with snow.
Lots of stray dogs around and at 0932 hours Arad was 443 kilometres.
We were now travelling towards Sibiu, along the river Oft, a tributary of the Danube, with lots of hydroelectric dams. The road was all single carriageway as it followed the river in the valley.
All very picturesque and we stopped at a road/riverside restaurant at 1145 hours and had two coffees, (which weren’t very warm) for €2. The toilets were
basic but ok.
As it was Sunday we phoned my parents, and Pat’s mum, to update them on how we were.
While making the calls some puppies were making themselves known to us, so I got some biscuits out of the car to feed them. The mother appeared and we fed her to.
In front of the restaurant was a small stall selling the local smoked cheese. We tried a small piece, then I gave her €3 and she cut us a wedge off, which we took with us.
We set off again at 1225 hours with Pat driving. The single carriageway continued and we averaged about 45 mph. At 1230 hours Arad was 279 kilometres.
We were now on dual carriageway and averaging 60 mph.
We got more petrol RON 196.13 at 1442 hours.
We arrived in Arad and saw signs for the Hotel Continental Forum and a Best Western.
The signs were attached to street lights now and again, we followed them along, however after one junction we lost the signs, so turned round and headed back, went a different direction and caught the signs again and found the Continental
Forum. Very smart looking city hotel, maybe 10 stories, standing on it’s own, 4*, looking like a Hilton type hotel.
Around the town we had seen trolley buses and trams.
We drove in and parked up. In to reception, very good
English and quoted €64 for the night, we booked in, room 807.
Got things from the car and into the room by 1710 hours.
We decided on a quick livener and popped down to the bar in the lobby area. A beer, diet coke and two waters, cost 25.00 RON. Did a small recce of the restaurant and so on, then back up to the room.
We freshened up and went down to the restaurant at 1900 hours.
We had -
Tomato Soup
Chicken soup
Sirloin steak
Beef tenderloin
Chocolate mousse
Mint parfait
Two black teas
A dry white wine
Diet coke
4 waters
Dinner 162.00 RON
A good standard of food and service. The place was not busy, back to the room at 2100 hours.
