Halloween definitely did not feel at all like a holiday being in China this year. We taught our students about it for the two weeks leading up to it and they seemed to have some fun, but it is a pretty weird holiday to explain to foreign people- "Oh yeah, we dress up in creepy costumes and encourage children to demand candy from strangers!" Hmm. I can see why my students looked at me in confusion. As it was just another day on the trip for us, we woke up yet again at 7am and went downstairs for the standard hotel buffet breakfast. It was fancy, delicious and we definitely were full by the end of it. We ended up sitting with another older Chinese couple (not in our group) at breakfast and they immediately tried ... read more

We reluctantly got out of the comfy bed around 7am, took hot showers and headed downstairs to the breakfast room. It was a typical Chinese breakfast buffet- fried rice, lots of meat and random Chinese pickled vegetables, toast, random baked goods, watermelon, hot juice that tasted like Tang and probably was and of course rice porridge. We ate until we were full and then headed outside with everyone else to the bus. As we waited for the few stragglers, a few teachers started playing their version of hackey-sack (they kick around an object with feathers on it) and Martin joined in, getting lots of laughs and "very good!" comments from everyone. It was cute. We found out that we were actually in the city of Ningbo and were on our way to yet another high school. ... read more

We woke up around 6:30am, probably the earliest we've set our alarms for since being in China (other than the whole training in Beijing thing...) as we rarely have to teach before 9am. It's a tough life. It was a bit chilly outside, so being up that early and showering on the balcony sans hot water (we still haven't figured that out) wasn't the most fun, but it had to be done. We'd quickly packed the night before and once we were ready, headed out to the front gate to hop on the bus with everyone else at 7:30am. We knew it was a trip for Senior 3 teachers, and soon realized that 4 of the leaders of our school would be joining us as well. We don't know their exact titles, but they're pretty much ... read more

This week has been pretty laidback, as we got back from Hong Kong Sunday evening and are heading to Hangzhou early Thursday morning. Lucky Martin ended up only having 1 class this entire week to teach! I, on the other hand, taught two of my most challenging classes- the students are less advanced, know that they're probably not making it into a good university, and really don't care about English. So, what do they do? Yell things in Chinese, pass notes, talk when I'm talking, sleep in class, do their Chinese homework, etc. It's nowhere near as bad as some American high school classrooms are, but it's still exhausting. If I let them walk all over me, I'll never gain control of the class. Many of them think "Oh, foreign teacher. She doesn't know what to ... read more

We were planning on skipping our Chinese class on Friday to get a head start to Hong Kong, but were informed last week that our first exam would be postponed, and rescheduled for that same Friday. Plans change, we're used to it, or at least unfazed by it! After taking the exam, and finishing class off by learning how to say certain body parts (Head, shoulders, knees, and toes, knees and toes!), we were off to the metro, taking a subway to the border crossing. No problems getting into Hong Kong, and figuring out the transfer stops along the way. It took a bit over two hours to leave from class in Futian and arrive at our hostel in the Tsim Sha Tsu area of Kowloon Island. Staci booked a stay for two nights at the ... read more

Today at lunch, a Senior 3 teacher named Susan came to talk to us, starting by saying "Hi! Good news!" She said the Senior 3 teachers are all going on a trip next Thursday-Sunday, and the headmaster has invited us. It was one of those situations where I don't think we really could have said no even if we wanted to. Well, we can always say 'no', as we're the foreign teachers. But, c'mon, who would pass up a free trip to another city in China and two days off teaching? Certainly not us! We don't really know any details, and probably won't until we get there (this IS China, afterall) but we're going to Hángzhōu in Zhejiang province, if you'd like to look it up. It's really close to Shanghai! Too bad we won't have ... read more

A few days ago at lunch, Harry asked us what time we'd be back at school from Chinese class. Class is in downtown Futian from 3-4:30, and we've been staying lately to have dinner with friends before heading back. It seemed like the natural start to a question of asking us to be somewhere, so we said “Not sure...we can maybe come back right after class...why?” (Note: Maybe is the favorite word of Chinese people. Maybe you will come teach an extra class tomorrow? Maybe you will do this for me? When we come back to the states, we're going to find ourselves saying 'maybe' all the time!) It turned out that our school was holding the first round of English speech contests and they were hoping we could be judges. So, being the dedicated teachers ... read more

NOTE: Something is up with Travelblog and it messed up some of the formatting/words in this entry...and will not let me fix it. Just know I tried...:) Well, vacation is now just a distant memory...we e officially back in the swing of things. Teaching last week went well for both of us without anything too exciting to report- the lesson was on Friendship and we played Thank you for being a friend, the theme song from the Golden Girls in our classes...awesome. :) Friday night we spent our first night apart in China! I know, gasp. Elyse and Pete are another couple in the program, originally from Illinois & Oregon but most recently from San Diego. Pete was in Hong Kong for a couple days so Elyse invited Cali and I over for girls night. The ... read more

Wednesday morning, we slept in pretty late, packed our things and checked out of the hotel by 11am. We asked Lily if we could store our belongings there for the day- a hotel worker opened a door and pointed to another door. Upon opening it, Jimmy was confronted with a bed and a sleeping Chinese person. Naturally, we'll just shove our luggage in here and not disturb this persons slumber... The four of us headed out to get breakfast, once again at Jimmy's Cafe. Jimmy, Cali and Martin weren't feeling the greatest after their epic night of drinking, but I happily enjoyed my hashbrowns feeling just wonderful (don't worry, I stayed sympathetic, we've all been there). We were all tired and sort of out of things to do, especially given their hungover state and my injury. ... read more

Tuesday. We woke up a bit earlier than we would have normally because it was going to be a big bike riding day, and we wanted to not start in the think of the heat. Our destination, Dragon Bridge, a place to swim and relax. Along with Jimmy and Cali, we met Greg and Maury at, once again, our favorite cafe, Kelly's. We had a big breakfast and were set to go. Ahead of time, we rented bikes from our hotel. Jimmy and I got mountain bikes for a bit more money, while the girls got regular road bikes. Greg and Maury rented from their hostel somewhere further away. To start, we knew the general direction to go in because it would be the exact same from the other day before. However, once we got going ... read more
