Alright, first things first! We were waiting to figure out if we could give out our mailing address in English or not, as we heard rumblings from the program that people needed to use Chinese characters to address mail. However, our contact teacher told us that mail should get here just fine using only English and has in fact over the past five years that they've had foreign teachers. So...SEND US MAIL!!!! (Upon thinking about it and a good suggestion from another program participant, I decided to remove the address from this blog-- message us on here if you want it and we'll give it to you specifically. :)) Do make sure you spell everything right though...and please, don't make us try to explain in Chinese to the post office why someone might accidentally address mail ... read more

It's not like anyone needs or wants to know this, but it just crossed my mind.... Since being in the land of squat toilets, I have only succumbed to using this method only once. Otherwise, I've been lucky enough that whenever I've needed to sit to use the bathroom, I've always found myself in my hotel or dorm room. See? I knew it was probably not what you all wanted to hear! However, the one and only time where a squat was required for this 6'5'' large piece of man was on a fast moving bumpy 25 hour train ride. Let me remind you for those who are still reading, I CANNOT SQUAT WITHOUT FALLING. Mixed with the whole being on a train thing, made for quite the awkwardly inhumane experience. I guess after being here ... read more

After having some lengthy battles uploading pictures, we are at the airport Starbucks using the free internet that comes with a mocha frappuccino. The upload speed is so much faster, making it a breeze to upload pictures, no matter the size. I have deleted the last post that had a link some pictures of our home here, and created a better album with more pictures. After some helpful advice from my father-in-law Noel, I have almost had a change of heart, haha, about uploading pictures. As I want to do it the same way for all my pictures, I will still be sharing most pictures the same way. If there are any pictures I deem not as "pretty", I will most likely re-size them, making them smaller, thus faster for me to share from our school ... read more

As Staci and I were getting ready for dinner, our nerves began to make themselves known. It wasn't the usual dinner, as we were going to eat with and meet for the first time top officials from our school. Both being more reserved people, we were worried how well our ability to make small talk over fish heads and chicken feet would pan out. We got the call to come down to the side gate to meet Shaka, the younger contact teacher that has been extremely nice and helpful. There, we met a few random people, climbed in a van with a few more, and sped off into the windy roads of rush hour. In the van, besides us, only Shaka was able to speak English. The others, while seemingly nice, kept looking at us and ... read more

The scene: Martin and Staci, laying in bed, 8:53am on Saturday morning, debating whether we should get up and get the day started or sleep a little more. As we made the decision to sleep more, Martin's phone rings and it's Harry asking us to be at a meeting to be introduced to all the teachers/leaders at the school. What time? 9am? Oh, okay, NO BIG DEAL! We threw on clothes (luckily he told us we didn't have to be formal), rushed down our six flights of stairs, across campus, up four more flights of stairs and into a crowded lecture hall where all the staff was already seated and listening to the headmaster and other leaders talk on the stage. We walked in front of everyone with Harry (out of breath and sweating), sat in ... read more

In an effort to escape the isolation and loneliness of being placed out in the remote area of Bao'an district, we took a 1.5 hour bus journey to Yantian district yesterday to see some of our friends from the program. Shaka helped us figure out what bus to take so we packed a bag, found the red "Airport Express 6" bus, paid and sat down in the air-conditioned comfortable seats for the next couple hours. Our program coordinator had told us it might be closer to a 2.5-3 hour bus ride, so we were pleased to have it be much less- I'm sure it being the late morning of a random Wednesday helped that a bit. Yantian is part of the Special Economic Zone, but is still more a bit like suburbia rather than an urban ... read more

Written on August 24th Quick re-cap of the train trip: Tuesday, August 18th: After the day at the Forbidden City, as Martin wrote about, we got on a train in Beijing that was to leave at 8pm. It was tiny and cramped- the 90 of us took up two cars, but unfortunately had a few empty beds on each car which were then occupied by Chinese people. When I say unfortunately, I mean that it was unfortunate for those few Chinese people that were forced to spend 25 hours with rowdy Americans. Getting on and figuring out our seats was pretty hectic, and Martin and I had to do some trading around with people so that we could get beds next to each other. We ended up with middle bunks in the same cabin. Then, as ... read more

When we were still training in Beijing, one of our days off was an "organized" trip to the Forbidden City which is located right next to Tiananmen Square. We loaded onto two busses by last name, and within an hour we were in the middle of Beijing, ready to see the nearly 1,000 buildings that make up this impressive complex of palaces. On the bus, we were given some quick instructions about what time to meet back up with the large group for lunch at the other end of the complex. Staci and I began exploring near where we entered the complex, taking several pictures, but quickly discovered in order to make it on time to meet the group at the other side, we needed to keep walking straight at a steady pace, not stopping much ... read more
