Being the baby in a family means you always feel just like that- the baby. It means for years I rolled my eyes at my parents vocabulary, telling them to stop using 'old fart' words and told my sister her fashion was no longer acceptable. I've always been the one in my family to keep others up on the newest IM phrase or fashionable clothing item, although some would argue my fashion sense is pretty questionable. When I graduated from college and started out in the working world, I was only 20 and always nervous for my colleagues to find out my real age. Well, finally, I've been reassured that I'm not such a baby. I'm not so young. I played a trivia game with my students yesterday and when the question was "How old is ... read more

We're sure you would like to see the pics of our Hong Kong trip, so without further ado, we have two new albums available entitled: "Birthday and Downtown City Center" "1st Trip to Hong Kong" Again, they can be found in our China Collection at our Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/24507962@N07/collections/72157622115423480/ Today was another good day teaching for me. It was also one of my longer days, teaching 4 classes. Tomorrow I have off, so I will try to do some catching up with emails to people and study Chinese since we have class tomorrow. I'll possibly do some lesson planning as well for next week. The weather continues to be fairly hot and humid, but there has been a lot more thunder/lightning/rain mixed in throughout the days. Several students have come to me... read more

Okay, so I may not be actually writing this entry while IN Hong Kong, but I felt it appropriate to give it that location regardless. First of all, can I just point out how crazy it is to be able to say "Oh, I went to HK for the night"? Wow. Let's back up a little bit. So, on Friday we of course taught (well, Martin did) and then got driven down to Futian for Chinese class around 1:30. There are 3 sections of Chinese Level 1 and you got placed depending on how well you did in the class in Beijing. We got placed in 1.2, the 'average-paced' class. There's also a accelerated class and a slower-paced one, but this seems to suit us perfectly. I like to be a brat and point out that ... read more

Celebrating holidays and celebrations overseas was something Staci and I knew would be hard, especially away from family and friends. Today, I celebrated my 26th birthday. As much as I missed being with loved ones, the day actually was quite special. I woke up with the most beautiful little face next to my side--Staci. (Alright, alright, I wont make this into some sap story full of nerdy, mushy cuteness). As we walked to our office, I started hearing students call my name, running towards me. "Happy Birthday teacher", "Happy Birthday Teacher Martin!" It put a smile on my face, one that didn't go away the entire day. In our office, several more students shyly popped their heads in, asking if they could come in. Surely, the answer I gave them was yes, and they quickly marched ... read more

Homesickness is a funny thing. It creeps in when you least expect it, most likely brought on this time by the familiar sounds of rain in an unfamiliar place. I think I cried for about a week straight before coming here, and not because I didn't want to leave. Anyone who knows me knows I get bored easily; I need a change of pace, a new scenery, a new job. I cried because it's simply hard to leave behind people and a life that you won't get to be a part of for a year. But, you can't do all of that AND experience everything you want to experience, so sometimes choices are made and bags are packed. Keeping up with friends and family on the internet is both good and bad- on the one hand, ... read more

Any Chinese person: "How you like weather in China?" Staci & Martin: Oh, it is very hot. Very different for us. We are used to rain and colder temperatures. Any Chinese person today: "How you like weather in China? It rain a lot today!" Staci & Martin: Yes, it is VERY rainy. We are used to rain, but not like this. Yes, folks, our first tropical storm is upon us. And it's crazy. At this point, I must copy a paragraph written by a fellow travelblogger (I went to find blogs in the Seattle area, and stumbled upon this stranger's blog, who summed up Seattle's weather problems quite well): However, this is not a normal month for Seattle. But then again, nothing in Seattle ever seems to be normal. When I first came here I was ... read more

Friday: We were told on Thursday that the school would be holding a banquet to appreciate all the teachers on Friday evening, and we were invited by the leaders- basically meaning we were required to go. So, Friday at about 5pm, we left campus with our contact teacher, Harry, and drove to a fancy restaurant in the downtown area of Bao'an. The banquet was in a party room on the top floor of the restaurant, and we passed the hour just chatting and drinking tea with Harry and a few other English teachers. Shortly after 6, the banquet began. Harry and one of the dance teachers hosted it, and it consisted of a lot of teachers performing dances, songs and giving speeches. At one point, Martin got sort of tricked into participating. Harry had promised us ... read more

We were not officially told about what went on for Teacher's Day until, well, almost the day itself. We were told that if we were scheduled to teach a class on Thursday during 8th period, then it would be moved to 1st period on the following Monday. This affected both staci and me, so it was good to know not to show up to teach during that time. Instead, we got to party Chinese style. Whooowhooooo! I was formally invited to attend two classroom party's, Senior 2 class 0 and 5. As soon as I walked down to class 0, several other classes got me to promise to attend their classroom festivities. It would be difficult, but I managed to make a presence in more classrooms than I thought I could have originally. My entrance to ... read more
