September 23, 2009 Our day began with a drive up and down the streets of Hill City looking for a deli that each of us had seen during our 3 day stay but could not quite remember where it was…we never found it! Travelled into Wyoming and while driving on a deserted road our battery light went on! After a very quiet ride into a town (I had started the Rosary) called NewCastle where a lovely young man checked and said the battery was ok…no charge…everyone we meet seems so kind. It was shortly after this that we got our first glimpse of the Rockies!!! We had lunch in Buffalo where John committed a men’s room faux pas that I won’t get into but it did result in Bill having to go to another restaurant to ... read more

September 22, 2009 “Bury my heart at wounded knee”. Travelled to a town called Wall today to see the Wounded Knee Museum, hoping it was better than yesterday’s quest. Although small and somewhat “touristy” looking, it gave a descriptive and moving account of what transpired at Wounded Knee. The stories were heart wrenching and deeply affected each of us. We left the museum and visited Wall Drug which is a well known South Dakota landmark and it reminded us of Clark’s Trading Post on steroids!!! We stayed long enough to sample the fudge (fair) and look in some shops (honky tonk) and then eased on down the road. Our next stop will probably be remembered as one of the true high points of our trip…and maybe our lives…we visited Mt. Rushmore and words will fail us ... read more

September 21, 2009 (Really the 21st. Yesterday’s blog is miss dated) “That redheaded lady in the back looks too young to be a senior”…These are the words I should have heard at “Bear Country” today….but no…I’m appalled! Anyway this park was amazing! I’m going to let the pictures speak for themselves…(I’m hopefully getting better with the camera). A lot of the animals were just out in the wild…approaching cars etc. We felt as if we were on National Geographic! Later we went by the Crazy Horse monument. Many of you probably know it’s only partially done so we just saw his face but it was breathtaking…Donna and I are coming back to see it when completed…road trip!!! We traveled for about 2 more hours to Wounded Knee and this was such a letdown. There is a ... read more

September 21, 2009 A lot of driving today as we moved south towards “Donna’s areas” of South Dakota. But what incredible scenery! Earlier today we saw Bison and then moved on and crossed the Missouri River…gorgeous. Onto The Cheyenne Reservation which looks like any other highway, but the sights we saw…brilliantly colored teepees, Prong Horned Antelope, Petrels (on their flyway…this from Bill), Horses..one Pinto, and a”Prairie Dog Town” with these adorable little creatures! Again there were miles and miles of farmland, so many cattle of all different colors. Also fields of sunflowers that literally go on forever! We stopped in Faith, South Dakota at Lynn’s Diner for lunch…Friendly people. The counter girl was a junior in high school and she told us their high school had recently been condemned…they were going to school in trailers. This ... read more

September 19, 2009 “Oh beautiful for spacious skies…” This is what we saw today as we drove through North and South Dakota… America… breathtaking scenery….. fields of yellow, amber, green that went on as far as the eye could see…tiny towns with populations of 100, bales of hay dotting the fields…square bales, round bales…some stacked in blocks or arranged in rows…cows in almost every field…deep blue skies…and when we entered South Dakota…Bison!!!We stopped in Windmere, North Dakota (pop. about 1,000) at a high school field and had lunch. We couldn’t help but wonder how these people live…so isolated…where do they shop...how do the kids get to school...how do they make it through those winters? Earlier in the day we stopped in Bemidji to see Paul Bunyan and Babe…the guys weren’t impressed but Donna and I were, ... read more

September 18, 2009 We decided to spend another night at our little cabin on the lake! It was very relaxing. Donna and I went to the beach…picture this…Donna in one of her “outfits” complete with a hat AND a fly swatter (the black flies were ferocious as if they thought it was spring) and me in my bathing suit and what I like to call my “stretchy” hat… let’s just say things will never be the same at Cass Lake. But we did see an American Eagle fly by….another interesting site was Donna and I trying to quickly hoist ourselves out of the beach chairs to get a picture. But alas our noble friend eluded us…as he hurried, back to the nest before he plummeted to his death in the throes of hysterical laughter….anyway… We rested ... read more

September 17, 2009 I wish each of you could see where we are right now! By chance we stopped at a place called Stony Point Resort on Cass Lake in Minnesota. What a spot! We are sitting right on the lake having cocktails and it is magnificent! We are so LUCKY! We left Porcupine Falls Michigan this morning...Traveled through Wisconsin into Minnesota. We had lunch in Minnesota in Fon-du-lac Indian Reservation. Don’t get excited, there was nothing but highway…and the boys picked out a LOVELY (not) place to eat our fluffernutters. But all that is forgotten now as we sit on this beautiful lake! Today’s Road Lesson: Avoid Brent’s Biffie ... read more

September 16, 2009 Beautiful day! Weather just lovely. Traveled along lake superior. Stopped for lunch at a rest area on the lake (Marquette). Cooked hot dogs and bratwurst on our Coleman…heaven (well not for me)! Found a little cottage on the lake for overnight. Perfect!!! Unloaded the car, planning our bon fire….a man comes to the door and tells us the cottage is already rented…TO SOMEBODY ELSE!!! We repacked the car, drove around and found the American Inn…not quite what we were hoping for! Today’s Road Lesson: Not so fast O’Reilly!!! Some additional impressions /memories: “Who ordered the tequila sombrero?” John listening intently to a French car mechanic giving direction when he could NOT understand a word the man was saying! Looking for hours for a hotel in Sudbury Ontario and found one beside the ... read more

September 15, 2009 Much better day! Left Sudbury at about 10:30am. Got off exit quickly to get gas…Drove for miles, no gas. Asked for directions…still no gas. Low fuel light on in the car...Started the Rosary. Finally found a “gas bar” in White Fish. Stopped in Massey. Red truck with unsavory characters… thought they were following us…well actually only I did! Glimpses of Lake Huron and Superior as we moved along.…people are right; they do look like the ocean. Back into USA at Sault Ste Marie. Border guard very funny. Called us hippies. Asked if we had any alcohol…Donna and I shaking in our boots (you’d think we were transporting heroin). Bill calmly answered “no”. That was a lie!!!! Had lunch in a rest area…welcome to Michigan.. lovely spot. Drove on through Michigan..Back roads, lovely country. ... read more

North America » Canada September 15th 2009

September 14, 2009 Uneventful day. A lot of driving…didn’t see much of the Great Lakes though that was the goal. Tired and cranky. So far Canada is proving to be very expensive, for example room rates running in the $120s-$180s a night (Comfort Inn) when comparable rooms in the US are $60s and $70s a night. Plus the taxes are outrageous!! We are in Sudbury, Ontario tonight. After driving forever, we finally found a room for $100/night….and not a very nice room either! We’re thinking of leaving Canada earlier than originally planned… We’ll see. Today’s road lesson: Start looking for hotels EARLY and think about booking ahead. ... read more
