October 17, 2009 Before today’s itinerary, a word about the little town we stayed in last night…It turns out that John-O LOVED the hotel and the town!!! He spoke to any person with a pulse, made friends with some winos in the next room and sat on the stoop in a plastic lounge chair (the building is made of cement blocks) drinking his cocktail and smoking a stogie…He thought he was the mayor!!!! And all this while poor Donna is hanging wet laundry all over their room in hopes that it would dry!!! Anyway…we left the “little piece of heaven” at about 9:30 this morning. We did a bit of shopping in town…it really is a great spot. There is so much Route 66 memorabilia (Dick…it’s George Maharis) that if you’re old enough…I’m not …really…to remember ... read more

October 15, 2009 We all agreed to leave early today so that we could arrive in Vegas early and sit by the pool. We had spent not a little bit of time yesterday, looking for potential places to stay. Hotels.com was quoting rooms for $20.00 a night…I’m not kidding and they were at big resorts…OK not Bellagio but others. We had settled on the Las Vegas Hilton and that’s where we were headed. But first we drove through Death Valley and that turned out to be one of the absolute surprise highlights of the trip…it was… magnificent…right up there with the Rockies and the northern Pacific. It’s difficult to describe it in any meaningful way and I know the pictures won’t do it justice…it’s stark, moonlike, mountainous, flat, gray, colorful, hot, still, dry, and I think ... read more

October 14, 2009 We left Santa Clara this morning at about 9:15 heading east…away from the coast and I guess in some ways…toward home. Although we have many more places to stop, our direction has changed and points us back to the beginning. Today is what we officially call in the business a “driving day”. It means just that; we get in the car, usually with our morning coffee, and drive until lunch. After a brief stop (Bill is usually tapping his toe) we drive for several more hours until the late afternoon. We are headed to Vegas, through Death Valley, and that will take 2 days to reach. Our route (for those interested in geography…which I, although interested am very very bad at) took us south, through the San Joaquin Valley and then east. The ... read more

October 16, 2009 Before leaving Las Vegas this morning we drove down “The Strip”. What a ride! I had been to Vegas 30 years ago and at that time it was one narrow road…maybe a mile long. Today…I don’t know what to say. Predictably Donna LOVED the hotels with their incredible entrances and adornments. For me, well, when they finally come from outer space…I want it to be clear…I think it’s NUTS! Moving along, we arrived at the Hoover Dam. Lake Mead is beautiful and the dam, amazing. We didn’t go on the tour…just looked from one of the turn outs. They’re building a bypass road that goes right over the dam and that partially completed structure was just unbelievable. The temperature at the dam was 94 degrees and the sun was HOT. That talk about ... read more

October 13, 2009 If I had taken pictures today, you would have had a chance to see that traveling is NOT always the exciting glamorous adventure you may perceive it to be. No…today’s pictures would have shown a harsher side of touring. One snap shot and the stark realities of being on the road would become clear…picture this…all four of us in one hotel room, eating corn curls watching Jurassic Park. This is what happened. On Sunday, Bill, the official weatherman of the group, warned of an incoming tropical storm. We decided then, that on Tuesday when we checked out of the lovely Sheraton at Sunnyvale, we would find a cheap motel and “hunker” down to wait out the storm. So…we located an Econo Lodge in Santa Clara, bought food and drink and stayed put… now ... read more

October 12, 2009 What a day! We went into San Francisco to go to Alcatraz and what a treat! First we had lunch in a restaurant on the pier, Butterfly. The meal was wonderful…the best we’ve had in a long time. Then we got on the boat to go out to Alcatraz. You can see the Golden Gate Bridge from the boat. This tour is so well done! It turned out to be one of the best experiences yet! There is an audio tour that is narrated by 4 ex-guards and 4 ex-inmates. The tape has background noises…cell doors slamming, inmates talking in the background. The prison has a lot of intact areas: cells, the dining halls, “the hole”. The history was fascinating! The actual island is only a short boat ride into the harbor. The ... read more

October 11, 2009 Today we decided to drive down the coast to the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel and Big Sur. The weather was a bit cloudy but we still saw some wonderful sights. Carmel was quite a town…a lot of shops, seemed very upscale. We didn’t stop, just drove through. We were looking for Clint Eastwood and ….he must not have heard we were in town because he didn’t show! Anyway we drove on to a route called “the 17 mile Drive” which brought us through this area of the coast with really beautiful homes. The road ended at the Pebble Beach Golf Course….WOW. There are holes right on the ocean…crazy. In the afternoon we drove down to Big Sur. We stopped at a place for lunch…kind of funky with people that looked as if they never ... read more

October 9, 2009 “To many, a redwood grove is a natural cathedral; there’s a sense of peace and reverence as one passes between the lofty pillars of trees and along the aisles of ferns, moss, sorrel and trillium, while high above sunlight filters through the canopy as if through stained glass”. This is a description of the Redwood Forest taken from a brochure about it…I don’t know who wrote this but I could never describe the experience as beautifully or as accurately! Today we left Eureka quite early. We were driving all the way to Sunnyvale which was going to take quite some time, but we had reservations there. After driving for a short while we turned onto the Avenue of the Giants and that was simply magnificent. We did feel as if we were ... read more

October 10, 2009 Today was a day of rest and relaxation. You may wonder why four people who have been on an endless vacation would need rest…but the truth is that after days of 8-10 hours of driving, we are all exhausted. We’re staying at the Sheraton in Sunnyvale California which is about 40 miles south of San Francisco. We tried to position ourselves between San Fran and the coast of Big Sur. So today we slept late, ran a few errands and then lay in the sun by the pool. The temperature is in the 70’s. It was wonderful. We had a great dinner at the hotel restaurant and then …to bed. Today’s Road Lesson: Vacationing is hard work! ... read more

October 8, 2009 When our oldest son Billy was about 5 years old he was given a new soccer ball which he loved. One afternoon we drove to Castle Island to walk around and get an ice cream. When we got there we warned him not to play with the ball near the water. Of course he kicked the ball and it went right off the path into the deep end, impossible to retrieve! He was bereft. Even today if you ask him about the incident, he still gets that sick feeling inside...so that's how I felt( and still feel) on Monday evening when I started to write the blog and my computer crashed. I was appalled! I kept pushing buttons, turning it on and off, unable to comprehend what was wrong. When I finally spoke ... read more
