October 27, 2009 Today we had a leisurely breakfast and then Donna, John and I took a four hour tour of the city…it was wonderful. The tour started out in the city or business district, continued into the garden district, then the arts district, the French Quarters and then a tour of Ward 9 where the worst damage from Katrina occurred. The guide was great and gave a lot of history. As we passed through each section of the city he told us how it was impacted by Katrina. The business district, where our hotel was, got just a couple of feet. We past the Super Dome where people were housed in the aftermath because all of the streets were impassable. The garden district got about 3-4 feet of water. The ninth ward got 13 feet. ... read more

October 26, 2009 Today was an interesting day. We set out early; we had a long way to go to get to New Orleans. When we left Galveston we drove a bit and then took a ferry that eliminated many miles on the road to the Big Easy! I hate ferry rides but this one was delightful. There were dolphins cavorting in the water, the sun was shining and it was …short! (and the sea did not roll so that Donna did not “you know what”! )When we landed on the other side, we drove right off the barge…it was quick and easy. We began our drive and the weather changed dramatically…it started to storm…and wow, it was unbelievable. “Tell me what to do if there’s a tornado” I say to Bill. It was very dark ... read more

October 25, 2009 “If the sea rolls, I puke”! This is the statement that Donna, the perfect lady that she is, made when Bill said we had to take the ferry in Galveston!!! But I’m getting ahead of myself…We left San Antonio this morning before 9am. We wanted to get to Galveston early enough to swim in the Gulf of Mexico and our hotel in Galveston was right on the ocean… ($46.00 a room, not bad!). We arrived about 1pm. Bill, Donna and I went for a ride to the beach…further down than our hotel where the beach was a steep slope. We got sandwiches and headed out to a spot where you can actually drive right on to the beach. It’s hard packed sand so there are no problems with the tires. The sea was ... read more

October 24, 2009 Today we went into San Antonio to see the Alamo and do the “river walk”. The Alamo was packed! Today was Founders Day so there were many booths set up with different civic organizations giving out information about the history etc. The only problem was that it really detracted from the Alamo itself. After walking around for a bit, we started out for the River Walk. You actually leave the street level and descend onto the walk. It has a lot of stores and restaurants and a very narrow river. The river looked filthy…I don’t actually know if it was...Still fun to see. It appeared that the Air Force boot camp was graduating… they were everywhere and they looked to be about 6 years old! Donna, John and I ate lunch there, quite ... read more

October 23, 2009 This is what happens when we drive all day…we start to go mad…Example: Today we were entering San Antonio city limits. There was a pickup truck beside us and the driver had about a million papers and envelopes stuffed in his sun visor. I commented to Donna about it, “What could he possibly be keeping all those papers in his visor for” I asked. She looked over and said…and ladies and gentleman she was dead serious…”Is that a dead bird?”…in his visor?!!…Gee… I don’t think so!! I thought it was odd about all the papers…but a dead bird? Donna said, “I thought the papers were feathers…” When I told her what was in the visor we both started laughing like crazy people and of course John and Bill, in the front seat had ... read more

October 22, 2009 “The truth is out there”… what a day we’ve had. We began it with a tour of the UFO museum and research center…really! It was fantastic!!! It gave the whole story of Roswell, what happened, who lied, and who covered it up! They had letters and sworn affidavits, pictures, movies. You could not leave this place without realizing “The truth is out there”! From Roswell we headed to Carlsbad Caverns New Mexico…wow. I have never seen anything like it in my life…and probably never will. Visitors get in an elevator and descend 750 feet into caverns. I know the pictures won’t do it justice…there were huge caverns or “rooms” the size of cathedrals. There was every size and shape stalactite and stalagmite (Bill told me those words!). We all thought it looked like ... read more

October 21, 2009 This morning we left Gallup at about 8:45am. The city is actually in a Navaho reservation…this just means that they own the land…it doesn’t look any different from any other city (I had visions of teepees and Native Americans in full dress but that’s not the case!). Like many of the Native American areas we’ve been in, the city seemed quite impoverished with few resources. When we left in the morning it was 34 degrees and raining. By the time we got to Roswell, about 350 miles away, it was sunny and 67…it is so strange travelling through these areas and starting out huddled in the back seat with sweatshirts and blankets and then removing articles of clothing as we move along until finally we’re wearing nothing at all…just kidding…whew, that is a ... read more

October 20, 2009 Some parts of this trip have come as complete surprises…today we experienced this again! When we left Sedona this morning, we were headed for the Meteor Crater which was a few miles east of a town named Two Gun…just after Two Arrows…really! Anyway most of us thought this was going to be a small outpost with not a lot there except maybe some sci-fi nuts! What we actually found was this beautiful spot in the desert with a large complex surrounding an actual crater in the earth caused by a meteor over 50,000 years ago…it was fascinating!! There was a great speaker and movie and then a walk up onto the crater edge. It was interesting and fun and way more than we expected. We left there and headed on toward Gallup. ... read more

October 19, 2009 “That’s a keeper!!! Those are the words that John (the button and switch man) utters every time he takes a picture. This is what happens…Donna and I are literally wedged into the backseat…(the condition of the van at this point is the subject of a future blog) and when a photo op presents itself she’ll often ask John to hop out and snap a picture with the camera on her phone so that she can send it home. Now she sets EVERY THING up for him on the camera so that all he has to do is point and click. But that is not easy for our boy John. Donna has gotten pictures of every one of John’s digits (both hands), fuzzy shots that can’t be identified, half a mountain and sometimes ... read more

October 18, 2009 Today John dropped Bill off at The Canyon…that’s what you call it if you’re visiting and you’re really cool…The Canyon…”Meet you at the Canyon”…”We were just over at the Canyon”…”Don’t fall in The Canyon”… Bill spent the morning exploring while the rest of us slept in. John and I went to the National Geographic Visitor Center and watched the IMAX film of The Canyon…it was really incredible! Donna waited for us in the center because those types of films make her head crazy. Afterwards we picked up sandwiches and set off to meet Bill. He had his telescope set up on the rim… (again if you’re cool) and we could see the lodge on the North rim…amazing. We had decided before hand to “dine” on the porch of El Tovar, one of ... read more
