The train to Kolkata was two hours late, so we had to cool our heels at the station longer than originally thought. I'm surprised anyone gets on the right train here. Bishal said it is hard enough for him to find out when the train is due and what platform it will be on, let alone a foreigner. There is no arrivals/departure board so you have to rely on announcements for updates, if you can hear or understand them. When a train arrives, the vendors appear, carrying their produce on trays balanced on their heads, a cane stand for the tray under their arm. I found it rather entertaining, as they weighed out grapes, placed them on a square of newspaper, and passed them through the train window. Others had peeled cucumber, plastic sandals, jewellery and ... read more

The overnight train to Varanasi was a fourteen hour trip. The mini van got us to Agra Fort station by 8.00pm, in plenty of time to catch the 9.00pm train. Once again, all luggage was piled up and we stood around it. Bishal gave us our carriage and seat numbers and it was up to us to get ourselves aboard. The train stopped for twenty minutes only, so there was no time to waste once it arrived. All luggage had to be stowed in our compartment, and we move as a team, making the boarding process as easy as possible for everyone. We have air conditioned three tier sleepers, and they come with bedding, the same as the trip from Delhi to Jaisalmer. I have no complaints as to the cleanliness of these trains. They are ... read more

We endured another bone breaking trip down that awful road back to the bus station this morning. Bishon warned us to keep a sharp eye on our belongings as we are now in one of the highest crime rate areas in India. I'm a little mistrusting of hotel staff, particularly in the standard of accommodation we've been staying in, so always put valuables, such as my iPad, in my suitcase and lock it before going anywhere. I never leave anything of value within sight. With this in mind, we all drop our luggage in a pile and stand around it, which we've done at every bus or train station we've passed through. All small backpacks are worn on the front where we can keep an eye on them as well. We have a 2.5 hour trip ... read more

The bus journey between Pushkar and Jaipur was an easy 3.5 hour trip. The bus pulled in to the front of the hotel, loaded our luggage, and we were underway. It was fairly modern and clean and we were the only passengers on board at first, although we did the usual pick up/drop off along the way. Much to my surprise, we used an expressway for the entire trip, except for a couple of dusty diversions into towns to pick up passengers. So, I reached Hotel Palms in Jaipur not feeling too shattered. The bus dropped us right outside the hotel, which was a bonus. Things were looking up, I thought, when we entered the foyer. Air conditioning, comfortable leather look seating and a lift! No extra charges for air conditioning or wifi, a definate improvement. ... read more

We were all up early and in the foyer of the hotel at 5.00am, ready for the train trip to Pushkar. The railway station, when we got there, was more like a refugee centre, crowded even at this early hour. People seem to set up camp - out come the floor mats and everyone lies down to sleep while they wait for their train. Food stalls were busy and there was a pack of dogs roaming the platform. I kept well out of their way. We found our carriage, definately 3rd class, and looked for our seats. They were padded bench seats with upright backs with a small padded area for back comfort. Each one sat three, but two would have been more comfortable. Luggage was put overhead, we all squashed in, pushed up the metal ... read more

Our transport to Jodhpur was via local bus. We had booked seats but there was no air conditioning, except open windows, and the bus could have done with a good clean. It had the loudest horn ever, which played different sounds, and the driver used it constantly. We had quick stops at all the villages along the way, everyone heard us coming and everyone heard us leaving. We picked up and dropped off passengers constantly as well, so the aisle was always full of people sitting on the floor. It was a six hour trip, passing through dry hot country dotted with tough little bushes, goats and litter. There was the usual bustle of activity at every stop, local boys trying to sell bottled water and snack foods through the windows, and passengers getting on and ... read more

The 22 day long tour I'm about to start is with Intrepid Travel, called 'North India Unplugged'. It's one of their basic no frills trips. We sleep, eat and travel like a local. View Intrepid's website for my itinerary, if you're interested. On Sunday morning everyone is packed up, suitcases downstairs, and gathered in the lobby by 8.30am. Luggage was stored until we left for the train station later in the afternoon. We accompanied Bishal, our Indian tour guide, to the metro station. First stop was Jama Masjid, the mosque I was turned away from the previous day due to prayers starting. We left the metro at Chawri Bazar Station, one stop before Chandni Chowk, so approached the mosque from a different gate. Entrance was free unless you wanted to take your camera in. For that ... read more

My flight from Bangkok to Delhi left on time and landed on schedule at Delhi airport around midday, Indian time. I have changed time zones and am now four and a half hours behind Australia. Getting through the airport was a breeze. I expected crowds and queues but, in actual fact, the immigration area was completely empty when I approached. So, it took me two minutes to pass through there, grab my bag, change the rest of my Thai baht into Indian rupees, pass through customs and out into the arrivals hall. I was met by a man from Intrepid Tours who had a car waiting to take me to Hotel Perfect where I was staying, in the Karol Bagh area. Well, the hotel is okay, but certainly not perfect! The air conditioner struggles and isn't ... read more

It's the beginning of another week and it promises to be a big one. Petra left this morning so I've had another sad farewell. It's been lovely having her company for the past five weeks. But, eventually we all have to pack up and return home, and her time has come. But, hopefully I'll see her again really soon...XX So now I continue my travels alone for the next three months. A daunting but liberating thought.... Left to my own devices, it's time to take stock, repack, check the budget and prepare myself for a flight to New Delhi later in the week. During the afternoon, I have decided to visit Wat Arun and Chinatown. Both places are best accessed from the river, so I walk the 500 metres to Thewet Pier, the closest to the ... read more

I was up early on Monday morning after a wakeful night. Today we leave Cambodia and heading to Bangkok via bus. There was last minute packing, checking and double checking to do, breakfast to be eaten, and all bags downstairs for our 7.00am pickup. We were all feeling a little stressed, I think, as we are on the move and have a long day ahead. Our pick-up tuk tuk arrived right on time. We looked at each other and wondered if two would have been a better idea, as between the three of us we have rather a lot of luggage. Apparently not, as the driver piled our suitcases and backpacks in, leaving us to fit in as best we could. The tuk tuk was horribly overloaded, but we got to the bus office without losing ... read more
