By midday on Monday morning I was back in Singapore. Getting through the airport formalities was quick and painless, and once again I headed to the Ground Transport desk to purchase a transit bus ticket ($9) to the Wink Hostel, my accomodation for the next three nights. This is the first time I've stayed in hostel accomodation on this trip. Economics had a lot to do with the decision - I wanted decent accomodation but without the huge Singapore price tag. The Wink Hostel provided just that - high style and high tech, for $40 a night. This is a 'pod' hostel, in that every bed is within a roomy 'pod' so everyone has their own space. I'm sharing a room with nine other women and can't see anyone once they're in their beds. The pods ... read more

My flight left Kuala Lumpar on time and landed in Kuching several hours later. I grabbed a taxi and headed to my accomodation, Singgahsana Lodge, but I was too early to get into my room. It was barely 10.00am and as check-in time was 1.00pm, I had a few hours to kill. So, I left my suitcase in their care and headed out into the streets again. Once the capital of the White Rajahs of Sarawak, and now with a population of 600,000, Kuching is small enough to explore on foot. The name of the city, Kuching, is thought to derive from the Malay word kucing, meaning cat. There are certainly plenty of cat statues in the streets and cat themed tourist junk in the shops to support this theory. I walked the promenade along the ... read more

The Air Asia flight from Ho Chi Minh to Kuala Lumpar departed half an hour late, which was the last thing I needed after hours of sitting around the airport between flights already. As Air Asia is a budget airline, the plane landed at LCCT (Low Cost Carrier Terminal), which is separate from KLIA (Kuala Lumpar International Airport). LCCT is almost 20klm from KLIA and 65klm from Kuala Lumpar city. The internet research I did, as to how to get into KL city without spending a fortune, will now stand me in good stead. I caught a transit bus (outside arrivals) which took me to Salak Tinggi Railway Station, the closest, and a 15 minute drive away. From there I caught the express train for the 30 minute trip into KL Sentral, the interchange station in ... read more

It's the weekend! An overcast one here in Hoi An, but no rain in sight. Not that it will make much difference to me because I have little choice but to stay in my room on Saturday. I have kicked the little toe on my right foot hard against the bed leg and wouldn't be surprised if I have broken it. It has swelled up alarmingly, and hurts like hell. So, it's a quiet day in for me. I rest, read, blog and sleep, venturing out around 5.00pm to Solo Restaurant, just down the road, for an early dinner. I eat breakfast at the homestay, and then have one more meal for the day, usually late afternoon. This is a habit I started in India and will try to continue when I get home. On Sunday, ... read more

Monday morning I'm up early, repacking my suitcase and tossing enough clothes for four nights away into my backpack. I'm getting rather good at this - If I wear my trousers for several days, and handwash a few small items each day, I need to pack less. The toiletry bag goes in the suitcase, I'm only taking what I need from it. My iPad, leads/adaptor for it and the camera, runners on my feet, camera around my body, an extra litre of water and I'm ready to go, and I still have space... I've checked out of the guesthouse, of course, but I'm leaving my suitcase here as I'll be back on Friday night. Today, I'm leaving Hoi An and heading via the Ho Ch Minh Trail north to Hue, on a two day motorcycle trip ... read more

Thankfully, the train from Sapa to Hanoi was much quieter and smoother and I actually got some sleep! Everyone was woken around 5.00am by an attendant walking down the corridor and banging on all the doors. I couldn't understand what he was saying but I knew we had to be close to Hanoi Station and he wanted everyone up and ready to disembark. I hauled my suitcase out of the train and followed the crowd of people heading for the exit. I had booked myself back into An Hung Hotel for Thursday night and was sharing a taxi with a couple who had slept in the same compartment as me, as both our hotels were in the Old Quarter. We walked passed the taxi touts at the entrance to the station and headed out into the ... read more

Friday night was certainly not my best night for sleep. The overnight train from Hanoi to Sapa groaned, creaked and jolted it's way through the night, finally arriving in Lao Cai two hours late, at 7.30am. Lao Cai is the capital of Lao Cai Province and shares the border with the city of Hekou, in the Yunnan province of Southwest China. I had already paid for a private transfer to Sapa, about 32klm away, and the driver was waiting outside the main exit of the railway station with his sign. Once again he was a Trails of Indochina Tours representative and he had a good vehicle for the hour long trip and we wasted no time in getting on the road. I was dropped at the door of Family Guesthouse in Sapa, my accomodation for the ... read more

I was so thankful to finally arrive in Hanoi. It has taken me so long to get here and now I find myself waiting for 45 minutes at the baggage carousel in the airport before my luggage finally appears. I rush through customs and no one there gives me a second glance. In the arrivals hall I look for the person holding a sign with my name, as I have already paid for a private transfer to my hotel. He is there, a representative of 'Trails Of Indochina' tours with his brand new car. He whisked me away and 40 minutes later drops me outside the An Hung Hotel in the Old Quarter of Hanoi. This hotel is everything I could wish for. Attentive staff, a lovely modern room with a good bed, a spa bath ... read more

Monday morning I find myself dragging my suitcase back down Gandhi Road in Darjeeling, to the pickup point for my ride to Gangtok in the neighbouring state of Sikkim. A Permit is required for foreigners travelling to Sikkim, as it is a restricted area, and I got mine sorted yesterday. They cost nothing, but you do need a photocopy of your visa/passport and a passport sized photo. I had bought myself two seats in the share jeep for 200 rupees each ($3.75), one for me and one for my backpack, to assure myself of some elbow room. There are usually four people squashed in across a seat where we, in Australia, would legally sit only three. But who cares for legalities here? If four people fit, four people it is! And just for the record, there ... read more

On Monday morning I left the hotel at 7.30am, three hours before my scheduled flight to Bagdogra. Hotel Victerrace was only 17klm from the airport but the taxi ride took almost 45 minutes, which I had anticipated. I would prefer to sit at the airport, rather than the hotel, at least then I know I'm not running late. The taxi fare was 400 rupees ($7.30) compared to the 750 rupees ($13.70) quoted by the hotel for the use of their vehicle and driver. Kolkata Airport has a brand new terminal which was opened earlier this year. It's a huge open space devoid of any decoration to soften it's clinical features. There are snack kiosks but no table settings to eat from, and the usual array of expensive stores for last minute shopping. I was the only ... read more
