IS THERE A FIRE IN ZIMBABWE? As we approach Victoria Falls we see lots of smoke in the distance, but as we get closer we realise it isn’t rising as smoke should and it must be the Falls! They are so big we could see them from this far away way up in the plane - I’m so excited now! As we come into land we see that the airport is literally a runway and a building in the middle of nothing - reminded me of a bigger, green lush version of the Serengeti Airstrip, minus the herds of animals. After collecting bags (much easier this time) we head out to the endless stream of people offering you cars, taxis etc. We end up with one who will charge us $30 USD, so we’re on our ... read more

At breakfast we again see Sudi and are almost running late to meet Roman to get on our way to the airport as we are talking again! Such a nice guy! EVENTUALLY WE WILL GET TO THE AIRPORT Roman is such a popular and well respected guy in the towns that when we drive through them, there are lots of stops for him to say hello and have a chat to so and so and this person and that person. Unfortunately for us, every time he steps out of the car we get swamped by every person in town who has something to sell, I even get another trade for a koala bear offer but this time decline. We check with the souvenir guys for my flag but they were only able to get a smaller ... read more

Today we’re off to Lake Manyara, on checkout the same guy who checked us in was there. But he was really chatty, friendly and even smiled! So perhaps he was just having a bad day when he checked us in… We’ve decided it’s time to introduce Roman to the world of the iPod, I have some country music on it that he will like and anything would be a change from Don Williams, and it’s probably my only chance of listening to Dolly Parton and Alan Jackson in the same car as Tim! OF ALL THE THINGS WE COULD GIVE TO AFRICA…. Yay, the radio tuner works on the stereo, so while Roman is arranging our permits to drive through Ngorongoro National Park (yes you need as permit just to drive on the road around the ... read more

This morning we are up bright and EARLY for a 5am pick up to go hot air ballooning, I’m so excited and I think Tim is waaay too tired to be too nervous yet. There are 24 people just from our hotel going this morning so we have a convoy of 3 vehicles taking us all down to the launch site which is about an hour away. Sadly me sitting in the very back and turning around to talk to the South African couple and Tim who were sitting behind me resulted in me becoming a 5 year old with car sickness, I was praying we would get there soon as I DID NOT want to get out of the car IN THE DARK feeling unwell - think about it! FINALLY we arrived, and then I ... read more

It’s on the road again after breakfast; it goes from a tight winding dirt road with a sheer drop down the side of the mountain to long straight flat areas where the Maasai graze their herds of cattle and goats alongside the zebra and wildebeest. We listen to more Don Williams, we have learnt that Roman likes all music but most of all he likes country music (he only has with him only one Don Williams cassette and one African music cassette, so we know them both well now), he would like to buy a guitar and be a country/western singer. He’d like a pair of wrangler jeans, denim shirt (“a nice soft one, not hard thick denim”), a cowboy hat and boots. It only takes a couple of hours to get to the Serengeti National ... read more

POOR TIM As excited as I am about today I am so tired, I was freezing cold last night so got very little sleep and poor Tim had a really, really bad tummy so was up most of the night. I set the alarm early so I could see the sunrise and when I got up it looked amazing, you could see the whole crater and there was a little bit of cloud just below the rim. But it was so cold outside and I was already freezing so thought I’d have a shower get dressed all snug then go outside. It was only 15 minutes that passed and when I went out a huge fog was rolling in and you could see only half the crater. By now Tim had woken up so I chatted ... read more

WE NEVER STOP LEARNING We are trying to learn a little Swahili as we go and we now have a little list of words we can, or try to say. Hello - Jambo Goodbye - Kwaheri Thankyou very much - Asanti - sunna Your welcome - Kariwu Yes - Ndeo No - Habana Milk - Maziwa Tea - Chai Sleep well - Lalla sallama And for all you people who are literate in Swahili, I know its possibly (okay, most likely) spelt wrong, but this was a lesson from ‘Swahili for Dummies’. We have breakfast at 7:30am and then at 8am we’re off for our game drive on route to Lake Manyara. ELEPHANTS, CHEETAHS AND MORE… This morning we see everything from yesterday including a bigger family of Mongoose and the smallest deer in Africa, its ... read more

GOODBYE GIRAFFES We’re woken up at 6:30am with juice, hot chocolate, fruit and toast brought to our room, it took a lot of insisting that this would be enough, they wanted to give us a full cooked breakfast. The other Australian couple left today as well as 4:30am and they were also offered a cooked breakfast! So we are now all ready for our driver to collect us at 7am, all that’s left is to see our giraffes. We see them walk out of the bush and one heads our way, we are madly shaking the food tin, it looks our way, so we shake some more, it starts walking over, we get all excited and then it just walks right by us! Damn giraffe! We go downstairs and say our farewells, Jess has come to ... read more

We are woken at 6:25am by the night butler with a juice for Tim and Hot Chocolate for me to drink while we wait for the giraffes to wake up. MORNING VISITORS We have a little bucket of giraffe food to feed them if they come by. So we open all our windows (even though it’s cold), and then it happens - my hot chocolate is sitting on the window sill as I open the window the locking arm pushes it off and onto the bed! Only about an inch came out but it seemed to go a long way! So we will now be known as the laundry couple! Then we see them coming through the trees, we ended up counting 8 of the resident 10 giraffes, slowly, slowly some make their way to the ... read more

After breakfast Francis meets us to take us to the post office to send back all our souvenirs acquired so far and also my boots now that they have done their job I’m glad to be rid of them! We then fly to Nairobi, Kenya for our stay at the Giraffe Manor. We are sitting next to a guy who is involved in Security in Kenya and he was nice enough to write down not only a lot of things to do in Nairobi, but also restaurants, his car driver’s phone number in case we don’t have anyone to meet us and to top it off, he wrote down his mobile number in case we got stuck at any time! Truly, this is the continent that believes in ‘kindness to strangers’! He also warned of the ... read more
