This morning we have been given breakfast in bed, which is really nice, except he takes away our left over cake! KINGS AND QUEENS In the morning we go to the Valley of the Kings, this is where Tutankhamen’s tomb is. There are lots of tombs built down inside the mountains, and we will be able to go inside 3 of them. If we want to go inside Tutankhamen’s it is an extra 100 Egyptian Pounds and since we have seen everything that came out of it we decline. He is still entombed in there but apart from that it is the same as the ones that we go into. No cameras are allowed into the area and bags are checked. So we leave everything in the car to save the hassle. In the information building ... read more

Today is a great day, we spend much of the day cruising and then stop to see places on the way. KOM OMBO After breakfast we go to Kom Ombo Temple. The temple again is enormous and there are so many tourists, I would hate to see these places in the high season. It’s the low season now because of the heat. But Salem explains the history of the building, the people that used it and how it all fits into history and then leaves us to explore on our own and take photos. It’s a nice way of doing it as when he is talking you are able to listen better because you are not distracted by having to take pictures before moving on. They have built a deep pit with a tunnel that joined ... read more

CONVOY TIME AGAIN We need to leave at 8:30 this morning to join the convoy back to Aswan from Abu Simbel. When we check out of the hotel, the guy in reception tries to give us a crash course in how to write in Arabic, it looks so nice but I think it would take a long time to learn. For the first time ever I am given a true gift. I bought a badge from the shop at the hotel and he gave me a free postcard, it was really nice. Ahmed the guide still isn’t there at 9am so we give him a call (Memphis Tours gave us a mobile phone before we left Cairo in case we needed to call anyone, nice touch) and he tells us the convoy won’t be leaving until ... read more

After a great sleep, we get breakfast delivered to our room, just a selection of breads (a little on the firm side) and tea or juice. I brave a trip to the bathroom to find that the reason you can’t use it when stopped at stations is because there is nowhere for ‘stuff’ to go but outside! I’d hate to be a perway walker here! Looking outside as we go along, there are a lot of farms and people dressed more traditionally, not many shirts and pants by the men but lots of the long robes. There are heaps of donkeys though, being ridden, used with little carts, carrying stuff… We get to Aswan about 9ish and are met but another Ahmed who tells us the convoy to Abu Simbel leaves at 11am so he will ... read more

Today we get picked up later because we will not be coming back to the hotel before we catch our train to Aswan tonight. We were going to be picked up at 10am but they are a bit late due to a car accident on the main road in and out of the city. MUMMIES, KING TUT AND ALL THAT STUFF First up we head to the Cairo Museum, it’s a huge red building in the middle of the city so it makes it easy to get your orientation in the city (if you chose to leave the safety and comfort of your guide!). No cameras and videos are allowed so Nesreen puts ours in a safety deposit box. She tells us about the major pieces and says if we stop for 1 minute to look ... read more

We have breakfast at the hotel and I discover that Egyptians appreciate sweet things, heaven! I have Om Ali which is like Bread and Butter Pudding with fruit, coconut and LOADS of sugar in it, it is sooooo good! After breakfast we are met by our guide for the next 2 days, Nesreen Mahmoud, she’s really nice and her English is fantastic! First we’re off to see the Giza Plateau to visit the pyramids. I’m glad we’re here in the low season because there is already a lot of people and a huge row of tour buses! The largest is the Great Pyramid of Cheopes, the next is of his son Cephren and the smallest is of his Queen Micerinus (I hope I have the last 2 names the right way around!). The son’s is covered ... read more

Flying into Cairo, the view is incredible! It’s all sand and thousands upon thousands of high rise buildings. All the buildings blend into the landscape though. But no pyramids yet! We are met at the airport at 7am by Ahmad, who is the representative from Memphis Tours who will look after us for some of the time in Cairo. CAIRO - THE FIRST GLIMPSE The weather is already warm; we are expecting the weather while in Egypt to range from 38-45 degrees Celsius - fantastic! He asks us about our peak hour traffic and tells us it’s peak hour in Cairo all week, there’s 20,000,000 people in Cairo and someone’s always going somewhere! They drive on the right side of the road and the cars are left hand drive, so it gives us a taste of ... read more

BANK TO BANK, CROSSING FINGERS First thing, we head over to the bank to collect our money transfer. We go to the Chartered Bank. Everyone is really helpful. After 20 minutes it’s all done! Can’t believe after all the hassle to arrange it was this simple - happy days! Then we go next door to Barclay’s Bank and ask to speak with the Manager. We explain what happened yesterday, that we didn’t count each bundle of money, but neither did the teller. He asks the teller if he was $60 USD over yesterday and he says no. So unfortunately we don’t get the rest of our money, we doubted that we would, but there was still a small hopeful part of us that thought we may… But the manager has kept all the information of what ... read more

YOU ONLY LOOK FUNNY WHEN YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE This is something that it seems some people don’t think about, like being the only person in a tuxedo at the beach. The World Cup is only days away in South Africa and while people in the other countries are talking about it, they are nowhere near as pumped as they are in South Africa. So this morning at breakfast when 4 Aussies walk in to the dining room wearing Australian green and gold jackets, jumpers, scarves, beanies, yellow rimmed sunglasses and yellow spray painted hair they draw some attention. We hear the waiters talking near us in their own language. What we hear is blah, blah, blah, blah, Australians, blah, blah, blah, hahahaha, blah, blah. Tim wakes up today feeling the worst he has for the whole trip. We both hope that as the day goes on he will start to pick up THE SMOKE THAT THUNDERS This morning we have an arranged guided tour of Victoria Falls. It starts from the Livingstone Statue and goes all the way to the Zambian bridge. We have to pay 240 Rand for park entry fees. Will have to query this with our booking agent as it was included in our price… Near the Livingstone statue we see the part of the Zambezi River before the Falls. The water rushes so fast, it looks amazing, we can hear the falls, and they are LOUD! We finally get our first glimpse of the edge of the waterfall. It is so high and so wide already ... read more
