Our journey south had a purpose, our aim was to get to a town large enough to process our visa extensions in a short amount of time, so we could continue driving around Vietnam. However, since the application can sometimes take a long time, we didn't want to be stuck for several days somwhere we didn't want to be. We were shooting for Mui Ne, but had DaLat as an option. From Prau, we intended to drive to Kham Duc (130 km), but when the road turned hairy again and Sadie's bike was smoking heavily, leaking oil and refused to start, we began wondering if we would have to change our plans. The first mechanic we found scared us into thinking we might have to stay for two days while we fixed the bike, and when ... read more

Armed with bungee chords, we packed our bags onto our newly acquired (though far from new) motorcycles (an hour-long endeavour) and got heavily dressed in the sweltering heat, in order to both not get sunburned and be decently protected on the road. Joe, our saviour, guided us through Da Nang (and its huge roundabouts and heavy traffic) and got us onto the mountain road that would take us to our first stop, Prau. We knew we had about 40 km left and about 2 and a half hours before night would fall, but nothing prepared us for the road ahead. Beautiful views, winding hair-pin turns, and endless climbs and descents. However, what this translated into for us was a very sharp learning curve. Learning our bikes (and how to ride them), and trying to find the ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Quảng Nam » Hoi An November 24th 2012

We were both very much looking forward to Hoi An, as we had heard so much about how charming it was, and were hoping to find a town where we could do the cultural/touristy thing without being in a gigantic Asian megapolis and all the energy use that entails. Also, our time in Phong Nha had sprouted an idea – buying motorcycles and driving them through Cambodia and Laos – and given us the means to make it happen (by way of an expat buddy of Phong Nha-owner Ben's), so we were eager to get cracking. However, Hoi An was not what we hoped it would be. There are more tourists than locals, to the point where pretty much all restaurants have only tourists as clients (a strange experience for us who had been enjoying our ... read more

Fellow travelers agree, even on the road, sometimes you need a break. After getting back to Ninh Binh (Sadie, trying to outsmart the bus driver, ended up getting us screwed over, so we had to walk about 4 km to the station this time, with all our gear) we caught the train leaving shortly after for Dong Hoi. The train ride was a long 9 hours, and in the rush to catch a train that we wouldn't have to sleep on, we neglegted to ask for anything better than hard seats. And when they say hard, they mean it. It was everything we expected: sticky, uncomfortable, hot and dirty, but we loved it. Everyone was really friendly, we met a charming mother and daughter and managed to talk to them for a while (a combination of ... read more

Asia November 9th 2012

To get to Cuc Phuong, we walked to the bus station in Ninh Binh (and were soaked through with sweat by the time we got there) and took the local bus to Nho Quan, the closest town to Cuc Phuong (apparently there is a direct bus going to the park entrance, but it is not on any signs, nor does anyone acknowledge its existence). The bus was only 25,000 d/each (7 kr or 1,5 USD), though we knew it would be the taxi from Nho Quan that would cost us. Already on the bus people were calling their relatives to tell them we were coming. They tried stopping the bus and telling us we were at the station, while a lone taxi driver offered us a ride for 300,000 d. We were pretty sure it should ... read more

The time had finally come for Sadie to realise her dream of going to Ha Long Bay! We were still in culture shock and getting our bearings in Hanoi, so we ended up booking a tour through our hotel, in order to avoid all the numerous scams but mostly having to deal with trying to second guess everyone's offers and mistrusting people just out of principle. We must say we have found people to be really helpful and trustworthy in general, but having read so many horror stories we (and pretty much all other travelers we meet) were trying to work out what the reality is as far as being a Western tourist in Vietnam goes. We met Emily, a nice and funny English girl travelling on her own, at our hotel, and we decided to ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » North Central Coast » Quang Binh » Phong Nha Ke Bang November 6th 2012

That Ninh Binh is not a destination in itself was no suprise, as it is the attractions around it, like Hoa Lu, Chua Bai Dihn and Tam Coc that draw tourists here. But we were mostly just excited (after the super-touristy Halong Bay) to finally be making our own way, and to be on the road on a local bus. Local buses in Vietnam (as in much of the developing world), always have room for one more passenger (a tiny plank with a cushion on it fills in the aisle gap, and voilá, a seat), and serve as a cheap alternative to the mail system for the locals. Also, they have few official stops (making it of course hard for foreigners to find the buses) and sometimes do not come even close to coming to a ... read more

After years of fantasizing and saving up, our travels finally begin! We managed to get just enough of a taste of winter before we left so Øyvind would have something to remember during our trip ;) And off we went! Our route was Oslo-Copenhagen-London-Hong Kong-Hanoi. To any of you smart-alecs who are wondering why not just fly Oslo-London, it made the whole trip almost twice as expensive. Go figure. Airfare is something Sadie has gotten a degree in recently, though it is sadly far from an exact science... Additional resctrictions included our life-long vow NEVER to fly Lufthansa again and to try and not have to use Munich or Frankfurt as a connection. Yes, it really has been that bad in the past... All our connections were tight, so we knew we were in for a ... read more

The final sprint was upon us and amidst the millions of things Sadie thought we needed to fix and Øyvind hadn't even heard of, there were many goodbyes (and see-you-soons) to be had! In the spirit of efficiency, we had a Goodbye party on October 20th (and were lucky enough to be able to borrow Øyvind's parents' house for the evening), and it was indeed a success, if we may say so ourselves. Sadie even managed to put together a lottery of things we wanted to give away, which we then raffled off, some items were welcome and others, well, let's just say we didn't manage to give away everything ;) The night's prizes included glue-on moustaches, pink gloves and sparklers (which were immediately lit indoors, they were a winner!) among many others. The mood was ... read more

Our departure date is getting closer! We don't actually have our tickets yet (our deadline is next tuesday, as it seems that tuesdays have been the cheapest arifare days... hope the waiting pays off!) but it looks like we will be leaving between october 30th and november 1st. And that means there is much to do! And one of the things that was highest up on Sadie's list was finishing work and (finally) quitting her extra-casting job at Hotel Cæsar, Scandinavia's longest running drama series. So now that at least one of us is unemployed, the packing and shopping and organizing can begin! And of course there are the prerequisite parties to be had. First on the list was Thanksgiving, a tradition we started only last year but that we had to repeat before we left ... read more
