We had booked the Phnom Penh – Siphandon (4,000 islands) bus, which left at 6:45. We got on and had been assigned the seats at the front, which was great (no one reclining on top of us) and the air-con was working and there was even a bathroom on board. We were thrilled! Three hours in we stopped for a short food-and-toilet break, and we were making great time. An hour further down the road, however, a moped came out of nowhere into the middle of the highway and the driver had to drive straight into a huge bank of gravel to avoid him. The tyre had been ripped bare, and the brakes were shot. We stopped and eventually they gave up trying to fix things and we had to wait for a new bus. An ... read more

We stopped for two nights in Phnom Penh, and decided to stay in the Psar Thmey area since we had found out that Sorya buses both arrived from Sihanoukville and left to Laos from the same place. And Sorya buses, we had found out, were, if not new, nearly always outfited with working air-conditioning! So we had one evening and a full day in Phnom Penh at our leisure before leaving the country. This time however, we were far from the idyllic civilisation of the riverside. Our hotel, for one, rented out rooms by the hour. And the streets around, though lined with budget guesthouses and tons of restaurants and cafes, seem to cater to a vast majority of single (often older) male travellers, who were obviously there to also enjoy the rest of the establishments, ... read more

We (mostly Øyvind) wanted to make sure we were somewhere touristy enough for Christmas in order to ensure some kind og liveliness and celebration. We decided to extend our stay in Cambodia and spend Christmas by the beach in Sihanoukville. We stayed at a fancy place with a pool and a breakfast buffet, and did very little except lounge, besides making time to eat not one but two Christmas dinners (one on the 24th at the Led Zephyr, where we were joined by a Norwegian couple we had met in Phnom Penh, and one on the 25th at Mick and Craig's, just so we could celebrate Christmas with the rest of the mortals...). We rented bicycles one day and went to Otres beach (we decided against motorcycles after we saw the police setting up shop and ... read more

The next day, determined to see more of Siem Reap than just the town and the temples, I rented a bicycle, left poor Øyvind at the hotel with a cold, and cycled through the countryside on the way to the Tonlé Sap Lake. It took only 10 minutes to get to where the road was narrow and lined by only sporadic thatched bungalows on either side. This was a bit of an odd route, since many tours go to the Tonlé Sap, as well as tourist-ladden tuk-tuks, so I was essentially working rather hard to get somewhere not in the least remote. But what was lovely was that I could stop anywhere I wanted to admire the scenery and take photos. It was a lovely trip, the rice paddies were neon green, with grazing water buffaloes ... read more

Our first morning visiting the temples we were picked up at 5 am by our jolly, lovely tuk-tuk driver Mr Theoun and our Apsara Authority guide (we decided to book a guide for the first day, in the hopes of both seing things when they were least crowded and coming away with more than just sore thighs and high body temperatures). We watched the sunrise over Sra Srang, a quiet experience compared to the thousands of people we saw gathering at Angkor Wat, and continued to Ta Phrom (now also known as the «Tomb Raider» temple...) as the dawn was still breaking, and the grounds were quiet. We felt priviledged to be there nearly on our own, witness to the remnants of an old empire being slowly swalloed by the jungle. The distances between some of ... read more

Our first day in Siem Reap was a lazy one, and we used it to acquaint ourselves with this new country (we know, of course, that a town visited by millions of tourists who come to see the temples each year, and that boasts an entire neighborhood of pubs and restaurants that would not look out of place in New Orleans during Mardi Gras is not a true representation of any country). Though there are some things worth remarking. Crossing the border reveals the novelty of tuk-tuks, essentially a small moped towing a seating carriage, varying in size from 4-seaters to what seems like infinite seating if one is to judge by the amount of people travelling in them at times. Levels of ornate decoration, and even corporate sponsorship, vary also. Their drivers hang on every ... read more

We braced ourselves to once again become part of the masses and board the bus... We gave up trying to figure out what the best bus to take was (so many companies offer the same thing with slight variations, and we know they all offer buses/conditions that have little to no root in reality – new buses, toilets, etc...) and booked through our hotel in Saigon. This is how the bus trip went (we didn't know it but we ended up on the cheaper bus, on the plus side there were many locals on it, on the downside, no toilets and it was so hot we couldn't do anything except sit upright and wait for it to be over...): First we were to drive to the border at Moc Bai. The «guide» offered to do the ... read more

Since we had the time, we decided to take the scenic route from Vinh Long to My Tho, and soak up our last day of driving on small roads, and off the beaten track. We took the ferry to Cho Lach, drove around Ben Tre Island, through mango groves and jakfruit plantations, by fishing villages and endless markets. We soaked up the coffee as well, and even stopped to take photos of precarious, overpacked motorbikes on their way to market. Arriving in Tan An that evening, we could feel the proximity of HCMC, the modernity and the traffic, and felt so lucky to have been able to experience the true face of the country in such a close and intimate way. The next day we drove into HCMC, and all the pictures of maps we had ... read more

The next morning we decided to drive the roundabout way to Can Tho, through Sa Dec by way of the ferry. It was just about the longest and slowest way to Can Tho, and it was lovely. We sanked around the islands, past fruit garden after fruit garden, the roads sleepy and barely wide enough for one car at a time. Endless bridges, markets and smiling faces along the way. The ferry was not the scary ferry we had seen so many times before, but rather a larger one, with cars, thus slowing down the traffic, even though we were glad we had watched them the day before and knew not to be at the front of the line, as people drove on and off well before the ramp even got close to the pier... We got up at 4:30 to get some beakfast before our boat picked us up. And then we finally saw how early we had to get up in order to go running with the locals in the morning. The fish market was in full swing, but eating fish soup while practically bathing in eels and snakes was a bit much for us before dawn. We got coffee, and found some sandwiches along the road, and met our guide, Truc. We had found him the day before by following our trusted rules: always check out our options (especially if a local says it's "complicated for us"), always pick people based on gut feeling (mostly Sadie's, Øyvind will give anyone a chance...) and avoid peole who nag and are aggressive. Our trip with Truc was amazing. He took ... read more
