We entered back into British Columbia today heading down the Cassiar Highway. We knew going down this road would be interesting because it's only been paved a few years. The first part of the road was narrow and had LOTS of frost heaves, but the next part was just narrow. Driving is always an adventure when you are in the middle of nowhere. We are dry camping for the night at a place called Jade City. It's called Jade City because they mine jade in the area and they have a huge store full of different things made out of jade. I found several things I would have liked to buy, but the prices were about double what they should have been. On the drive we went through an area where 30,000 acres of land burned ... read more

Joyce and I decided we would give our guys a driving break this morning. We both pulled behind the wheel and off we went down the road. We both are pretty comfortable driving, but it does not hurt to do it every now and then to keep in practice. About 50 miles down the road Jon comes on the radio and says "We are stopping. I think we have a flat". Sure enough, this time it was a flat on their truck. Joyce is now three for three flat tires and has about had it with those darn rubber things. After getting the flat tire off the truck (5th wheel trailer still attached to truck), we headed down the road to Whitehorse. Thank goodness Whitehorse is a big town... They were able to test the tire ... read more

With the dogs all buckled in their seatbelts and a day full of bright clear sunshine we headed out. The temperature was a little chilly (41 degrees) but we are getting used to it being cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon. The last few days there has been a 30 - 40 degree difference between early morning and later afternoon temps so knowing how to dress is interesting. The beginning of today's drive was no different than yesterday, slow and bumpy. I took some pictures of the frost heaves so you can see why we would go no faster than 35 mph during these stretches. Given the first 75 miles of the day we were not sure we could make the planned 200 miles today, but all of a sudden the road changed. ... read more

Last night the rain began, but thank goodness it let up long enough for us to break camp and hit the road. We hit rain on and off all day, plus we encountered some of the worst perma frost dips (also known as frost heaves) we have seen yet. It's amazing the damage that comes from the ground slightly thawing under an asphalt highway. We successfully made it back into Canada and once we crossed the border the road proceeded to get even worse. It took us almost 7 hours to go just under 200 miles. We are in a small town just over the border which has only water and electric hook ups. No Wi-Fi or cable TV. Instead of sleeping the evening away, we had movie night. Police Academy 1 was the movie and ... read more

We left Anchorage bright and early this morning since we had about 200 miles to cover today. It was a good thing we left when we did as there was lots of road work being done along the way. Since we came down from Fairbanks to Anchorage at the beginning of our trip, the trip today, towards Canada, was all new scenery. As usual Alaska did not disappoint with it's gorgeous lakes and glaciers. I hope you enjoy today's scenery as much as I did capturing it.... read more

Today while I did laundry and cleaned the inside of the trailer, Joe cleaned the outside. Then it was time to tag team and give the dogs their baths. Since today was our last day in a big camp in Alaska, we all decided having a "goodbye Alaska" BBQ was what we needed to do for dinner. Salmon, steaks, hamburgers, beans, camp potatoes and mixed vegetables were the menu. Of course we had to have dessert so Jon and Joyce provided the banana cream pie. Our goal 3 months ago was to see as much of Alaska as we could in 5 weeks, and we all agreed we did just that. While the 3 months seems to have flown by, all I have to do is talk to the grandkids back home and I am reminded ... read more

After a quick trip to Costco and Walgreens for last minute stuff, we took a look at the weather and headed out. First stop was Beluga Point. A great place to watch the tide come in at the Cook Inlet. Then we headed farther down south to Mount Alyeska (spelled correctly this time). It was a gorgeous day and the temperature could not have been better. The view from the top of the mountain, via the tram, was yet another beautiful Alaskan site. We finally were able to see some doll sheep but they were kind of high up the mountain so the pictures are not that great...... read more

We had intended to go up to Mount Aleaska to ride the tram today, but a front came in and there were clouds everywhere most of the day. Instead we went to the local community market and then had lunch at Moose Tooth Pizza and Brewery. It truly was the best pizza of this whole trip. Then it was off to the commissary to do our grocery shopping. We have food in every nook and cranny in our rig. Food prices in Canada are crazy ($8.00 for a gal. of milk). Since we can't do much about the $6.60 a gal. gas prices, at least we hope to not have to buy many groceries during the three weeks we will be traveling down through Canada.... read more

Today was infusion day so I spent most of the day at the base hospital doing my thing. The staff there were great and I even ran into a Captain I worked with at Wilford Hall a couple of years ago. I did get some awesome salmon and halibut recipes from the nurse and another patients also getting an infusion. Tomorrow we go see what Anchorage has to offer.... read more
