Geo: -24.9705, 31.5099We flew back to Johannesburg where we rented a car for 3 days. Weimmediately headed out to our game lodge in the Sabi Sands Reserve nextto Kruger Park. We had a tight schedule as it was a 5 hour driveand we had 6 hours from the airport to get to the Game Lodge in timefor our 4 pm Safari. We couldn´t believe that Thrifty Rent a cardid not have a map for us. We finally found a poor map at one ofthe other rental car agencies and promptly headed out on the hugefreeway that took us to our destination. What a maze of roads isthe freeways in Johannesburg - very confusing. We were so pleasedto finally get out of the city area and enroute on our freeway. The freeway narrowed down to a 2 ... read more

The centre of Durban to theright, the beach in front and the Eastern Coast sprawling to theleft. Iny was so gracious as a host. We can´t thank her andher family enough for coming to our rescue with a home exchange whenour exchange in Cape Town feel apart. What a lovelysetting. We enjoyed some wonderful restaurants (Il Maurice, BeanBag Cafe & more) and took turns cooking gourmet meals, enjoying theincredible view from the balcony. Geo: 31.23, 121.47We took a train trip after 3 incredible days in Beijing - packed with adventure and activity. The train was very modern and comfortable (2nd class) and travelled throughout the day so we could enjoy the Chinese country side. Watching the Chinese countryside was fascinating. Every inch of land was developed. We passed cities, villages, industry and agricultural areas. It was a challenge to figure out how the land allocation was done with the workers (it has been leased to worker groups as far as I understand). Take a look at some of our photos from our Shanghai adventures (cough, cough - that is the smog)!... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach February 15th 2008

Geo: -20.2679, 148.716We made it back safey, having rode out the tropical storm in Cid Harbor for 2 days. Water dripped through the hatch on our heads as we slept and we bounced through the night but our anchorage held. We returned to Airlie Beach and heard about the damage that occurred here as they were unprotected from the Northerly winds. We were amazed. At least 36 boats were tore from their moorings or anchorages and smashed onto the rocks on shore. Some were luckier to be washed on to sandy beaches but the damage was in the millions. Many sad stories of boats that were not insured but even ones that were will never give the owners what they had before the storm. We stayed at 2 Home Exchanges that were condos with pools. The first ... read more

Geo: -20.2196, 149.025As you know how much we love sailing, we chartered a bareboat from Airlie Beach for a week from Feb 7th to 15th. When we sailed we caught a few days of mixed sun and rain where we had some fun adventures; snorkelling, hiking and meeting all kinds of new and strange Marine animals (huge sea turtles, tropical fish, stingrays flying into the sky and phosphorous plancton that lit up the night waters like a star filled night). We even woke one day to discover squid (that fly apprarently) on board and in our dinghy. We found a fourth squid (after another unpleasant day where the smell was getting gruesome) behind the head (toilet). He somehow flew through the 4 inch by 6 inch portal and crawled behind the toilet - unseen for a ... read more

Geo: -33.8671, 151.207Loved Sydney. Our second time here - 20 years later! Unfortunately, we had rain all week but Sydney is such a dynamic city there is lots to do even in the rain. Caught a lot of theatre; Billy Elliot, the musical (Loved it), Burt Bacharach live at the Opera House and a new gay musical, Hello Again (not so much).... read more
