Wellington is known as the Windy City because situated where it is at the bottom of North Island right next to the Tasmen Strait separating North and South Islands it is exposed to the weather funnelling through the two land masses. It is the Capital city of New Zealand but only since 1865 and it was selected instead of Aukland as it was feared that the S. Island would claim independence so Wellington was selected to be a more central seat of government. The city has a population of191,000 which expands to 416,000 if you include the other towns in the Wellington region.
