Central America Caribbean December 24th 2009

After a long sleep James and I woke up at 7:30am, ready to get started. The course starts at 9am and already it is really hot out with not a cloud in the sky. It begins with the set up of our scuba gear, getting everything hooked up and on then taking it all off and repeating the process. Once we are all proficient at it, we step off the dock one at a time. Two hours of underwater time later and we can all do all the safe diving skills such as go with alternate regs, swim without masks, give all the hand signals and buddy dive. It was great doing it in a group of five with our two laid back instructors. The buddy system works for us all as we pair up and ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Bay Islands » Utila December 23rd 2009

Today we finally get to go to Utila. We all woke up early and caught cabs to the boat at 8:00am. Our breakfast consisted of fruit and random stuff from the market. We jump on the boat and it takes about an hour to get to the island as the crew hand out barf bags to many of the other passengers. We got in without a hitch and meet our diving company on the dock. It is quite a show as only locals are allowed on the dock to get customers for there companies. The girl that came to get us was white but had a Honduran citizenship so there was a huge issue with a differet dive shops local who was mad. He looked at her ID and told her never to come back to ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Northern » La Ceiba December 22nd 2009

After a restless sleep we all woke up, grabbed our bags and headed to the dock with barely time to brush teeth. It ended up being quite the ride though, as we boated along the coast seeing awesome scenery. At one point dolphins were swimming beside us and the weather is finally hot again. We got to the border and from there took a bus through Honduras. Before I discuss that though, the town of Livingstone in Guatamala needs a bit of history. It Is a completely different culture than the rest of the country, having a black carribean population. They are very friendly and the seafood is the cheapest meals (yes!). We went to a local diner and ordered random seafood. Matt and Alyse got the supreme meals of seafood soup. It had snails, a full ... read more

Still pouring as we all got up this morning, don't know how this day is going to go. We decide to wait in the morning to see if it will clear up but it's not great with no power in the middle of a jungle/water maze. As noon approaches the weather stats to clear so we decide to chance it and ordered a boat for 1pm. It starts off alright as we head to see a fort with cannons used to guard the inlet back in the conquest days. We are all taking photos of the various sights and there is a nice stop at a hot springs half way to Livingstone. This is where things take a turn for the worse and it starts to downpour. All of our stuff is still damp from the ... read more

Woke up to the sound of crickets and a facefull of my bug net. Not terrible though, I kind of like this camp style hostel in the middle of nowhere. We all had a late breakfast and decided to head to the hot spring falls. The weather was pleasent as we boated into town. Picking up lunches from a local diner, we jumped on our first chicken type bus! What an experience, there were 23 of us packed into a van suited for 11 max. The whole way Matt and Jeff were complaining about numb legs haha and I am pretty sure Matt was partially sitting on a lady who had a baby in one arm. It was a very cramped 45 minutes but we made it to the falls and began to hike in. The ... read more

Not the best of days, we spent it almost entirely on a bus. An hour ride to Guatamala City turned into two and it took an hour to get through the traffic in the city just to be dropped off at a different bus terminal. So we left Antigua and it's cobbled streets at 8:45am and made it to Rio Dulce at 7:15pm in what we were told was a seven hour trip. The cool thing about Rio Dulce though, our hostel is out in the jungle! We took a boat along the lake and through some overgrown passages to get too it and it is cool. All boardwalks to different huts. Four of us are above the bar and Justin is way out in a little hut, which gave us a good laugh walking there ... read more

This being an organization day, was susposed to be a relaxing one. It ended up being anything but. We all spent the morning doing a whole lot of nothing but by lunch we found some Brits who wanted to play soccer. So the five of us along with two Brits and an Aussie walked down to the local market and bought a soccer ball. We then headed to a dirt field with a net, thinking we would play 4 on 4 (this was at 2pm). By 3 there were more locals than us so we had a huge game. It was great until actual teams showed up to use the field and we got displaced. It all worked out because we found another net. By this time we are all getting quite tired and almost ready ... read more

Whew a better day today. I woke up a few times but feel much better. The sickness is fading so I am back to an almost normal routine, perfect for a busy day. We started the morning wandering through the market buying some things and walking away from others. Most of us coming away with more than we wanted but when you get 'only the best for you sir' there is only so much you can take before caving in. The pinnicle being when we were walking by a little girl selling bracelets in full traditional Guatamalan clothing. She was too cute and Jeff caved first. After that we were booked to head up to see Pacaya (an active volcano). Jumping into a cramped van we headed up thinging we could rip up there fast. Those ... read more

I woke up all through the night, still sick. If this continues I am heading to a doctor tomorrow. I have been able to eat a little but this is aweful. We went to the market but I only stayed 10 minutes before heading back to the hostel. The crew all bought some souvenirs which were cool, so hopefully I will feel well enough in the morning to walk back there and bargain for different souvenirs. I wish I was well enough today because as I was leaving the jersey booth the owner yelled 40 quetzals at me for one which is the equivalent of 5 Canadian dollars. I will not say what the others bought just in case there was a present or two in the mix :). Good night (it's 8pm but I need ... read more

Roughest day so far, I woke up very sick at 2 in the morning and we had a 8 hour bus ride coming at 9am. I threw up my dinner from the night before. Then I was confined to the bathroom right up until we left not eating all day and at every stop became more dehydrated in the bathrooms. Finally at 1pm I found some peptobismol and drank that. Driving through Guatamala city was an experience, it was so polluted and dirty looking. We made it to the hostel in Antigua at 4:30pm to find that our reservation hadn't been prossessed. If Lauren and Alyse find another hostel then we will all have beds, if not James and Matt volunteered to sleep in hammocks for the night. Being sick they let me have one of ... read more
