Our last night in Hanoi had sadly arrived. Ha came and farewelled us at our hotel. Hugs all round and many thanks for making our visit so good. She also gave us some monk beads which have a special meaning for her and now us (tell you some time in private). Ha had to attend a meeting so could not stay too long. Thanks for the loan mate - will give you back 1 aussie dollar back home - ok? Together with Mike and Yen we dined again at the vegetarian Buddhist place we ate at when we first arrived in Hanoi. Again, more thanks and hugs and goodbyes. None of the ATMs were working in town so I had to hit Mike up for the money to buy the meal - “thanks mate, my shout ... read more

A taste of Alsace in Hanoi Ha, not the tour leader, but our friend in Hanoi (like we said it is a popular name) had recently been to Paris. While there she had dropped in on my “petit cousin”, Jean who gave her a bottle of his Cremant d’Alsace for us to share. It was one of the last bottles of the vintage we had worked on together when last in France. his was a really special gift, which we decided to drink, together with Ha’s mother, father and brother at their house in Hanoi. It was great to meet them for the first time and discuss various snippets of their family history. Ha’s father is a very interesting man, having been a doctor in the North Vietnamese Army, then having worked in countries such as ... read more

Our hosts in HCMC kindly arranged for their driver to take us to the airport. We took off from Saigon, via Pacific Airlines back to Hanoi. This was a great, efficient, cheap airline and they had some very good deals when they first launched their website back in early February, so we got our tickets for under $50. Beer Hoi & a BBQ We finally caught up with our mate Mike who we had been trying to contact when we were first in Hanoi. We could not get him on his mobile and found out that he had been away in Thailand at a meditation retreat for a week or so. A good excuse to have your mobile turned off I guess. We caught up in Hanoi that evening and shared some glasses of Beer Hoi ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City March 14th 2007

Throughout the following morning our companions all departed toward the airport or to meet with other groups they were traveling onward from Vietnam with. Lorenza and I took a last walk around the market and then waited for our contact from the Hospitality Club to pick us up from our hotel. If you have not heard of it, you should check out the Hospitality Club on the internet. If you love travelling and meeting other travellers it is a great organisation (and free). Take a look here ... Hospitality Club So, prior to leaving home we made contact with some people in Saigon, via the club, and organised to spend a few days staying with them at the end of our tour. They are a very nice couple, he an ex-pat American and his wife, who ... read more

Ho Chi Minh City sure is a mouthful, luckily most of the locals still refer to it at as Saigon, which seems so much more practical. We arrived at the rail station at about 4am, there were people everywhere at this time of morning. Even though it is the main rail stop in Vietnam, our train still did not pull up at a platform as such, we had to lug our bags down the train stairs, then cross the tracks to get to the platform opposite our train. At 4am its loads of fun dragging your baggage across hoses that have been set up to pump out the trans toilets! Outside the station we found out our mini bus to take us to the hotel had been involved in an accident - so we all had ... read more

To get to Nha Trang we took a bus to Danang (I think), and then climbed back on board the Reunification Express. The trip took about 9 hours. While the scenery was great, the day train was for some reason filthy compared to the night train. Maybe the rail workers think they don’t have to worry about it so much because you are not sleeping on the train? We were in the same kind of 4-berth, soft sleeper compartment, but the carriages looked like they had not been cleaned for 10 years. Lucky we brought along our own toilet paper too because the day staff obviously thought we didn't need any for a nine hour journey. The nine hours passed quickly, playing cards, reading, telling jokes and watching the country pass by our windows. Looking on ... read more

From Hue, we ventured on to Hoi An, via a scenic mountain route over the Hai Van Pass. The trip was about four hours, there was a bit of fog about, but we managed to glimpse a lot of great mountain scenery in breaks in the fog. Stopped along the way at Marble Mountain to take a look at the incredible marble and jade statues the place is famous for. Lorenza almost had me convinced to purchase a huge Buddha for our garden, but my credit card was saved by the fact that we did not have a long enough stop for her to seal the deal (phew!). Clothes shopping Lucky we did not give the credit card a work out at the marble place, because Hoi An is a clothes shoppers mecca. he entire ... read more

Hue was the imperial capital of Vietnam up until 1945. It was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. Hue has a lot of interesting monuments, temples and pergodas, including the Royal Citadel and the Emperor’s tombs. Thien Mu Pagoda was also an incredibly interesting place. Also Hue gave us a snapshot of another side to Vietnam rather than the tourist trail. We embarked on a day long motorcycle tour which took us through the backstreets, countryside and village districts on the outskirts of the city. This was a great way to get around, who would not be overwhelmed by 150cc of unleashed fury in the guise of a Honda Dream, with “Born to be wild” playing in your imagination. We wound our way down laneways, country tracks, in and out of rice fields ... read more

Back in Hanoi again, we had enough time to freshen up and grab some supplies of munchies and drinks, plus some party clothes, before heading to the railway station to catch the overnight train to Hue. One of our group just happened to be gay, it was Saturday night and coincidentally the night of the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gra. We all decided to get in the swing of things and hold a Mardi Gra on the train. Our mission in Hanoi was to find something appropriate to wear for the evening. The trip to Hue was our first stint on the “Reunification Express”. I was not sure what I expected, but our tour notes said “we use 4-berth, air conditioned, soft sleeper compartments”. Once on the train we found that “soft” meant a ... read more

Our overnight cruise at Halong Bay, on board a “junk” style boat was great. This world heritage listed area is absolutely breath taking. I think the photos give a good idea of the beauty of this area. On board the junk was our first encounter with one of Vietnam’s most commonly stocked wines - 1996 & 1997 Bordeaux (white or red - take your pick). We later found this vintage was available in from every restaurant, bar, shop and street vendor. 1996 & 1997 must have been a incredible years for production of wine in Bordeaux! I had drunk a few beers by the time we pulled the cork on our first 1996 red Bordeaux. After downing the first glass with “cheers” all round with our fellow travellers, I refilled and noticed that this “Bordeaux” ... read more
