Our friends Sandar, Terence and Ohnmar, invited us to the Songkran Asian New Year and Water festival at the Wat Pa Buddharangsee Buddhist Temple at Leumeah. One of the highlights being delicious asian food from Australia, Burma, Cambodia, Lao, Malaysia, Sri-Lanka and Thailand. Ohnmar, Sandar and their mother were working on the Burmese food stall, raising funds for the new temple that the Burmese community have recently purchased at Smithfield. Lots of interesting cuisine was on offer, including deep fried quail, melon and Sri-Lankan love cake. Most of the children and many of the adults got into the swing of the Water festival using buckets, tubs, and water pistols to drench anybody who was not on the ball. I got a tub of ice water down my back as did Lorenza, but the person who wet ... read more

From the teachings of Buddhism comes the knowledge that nothing in life is permanent and that we should learn to let go of wanting and desire, in short the road to happiness is paved with discarded wants and desires. I got very excited when I found a lovely, second hand, variable capacity stainless steel wine storage tank for sale. I knew I had to have it after seeing them in some wineries on our recent travels in France. So, I shelled out the required cash and soon had my new purchase in our wine making room, eager to put it to use. It was perfect timing because our latest batch of Semillon was ready to be racked of the sediment and stored for more aging and clarification. I got to work at about 6pm, preparing all ... read more

Australia Day Recruitment Drive - 26th January 2008 (Video of new wine fermenting added - see below) Work on our 2008 vintage got started on the weekend, beginning with a recruitment drive on Australia Day! We invited all our neighbors and friends for a BBQ to celebrate Australia Day. Once they were fed and plied with alcohol we made the recruitment pitch for anyone who could: a) Get themselves out of bed at about 5am on Monday to help harvest the grapes, b) Get a good night sleep and join us later in the day when the grapes were ready to be de-stemmed, crushed and pressed. Our recruitment drive was reasonably successful. Harvest, monster spiders & chattering teeth - 28th January 2008 We set forth at about 5am from home and collected our buddy Paul along ... read more

This Saturday was the opening of the Sydney Festival and all the events were free. Lorenza and I checked the program a few weeks ago and decided to book a hotel and make the trip to Sydney and enjoy the fun. On the program were 3 weddings in Macquarie Street, dance parties in Martin Place, Angel Place, Hyde Park and a concert in the Domain featuring Paul Kelly and Brian Wilson. The one and a half hour train ride to Sydney is a bit of a bore, but I could not be bothered driving and then searching for parking. The weather was not looking all that brilliant when we left home and the forecast in Sydney was for showers. The temperature was still expected to be about 28 or 30 degrees so a little rain would ... read more

Lucky for Lorenza and I we have no problems deciding whose family to spend Christmas with each year. Lorenza's folks are originally from Holland and celebrate on Christmas Eve, whereas Rob's family follow the more Anglo-Aussie tradition of celebrating on Christmas Day. So, Christmas Eve we found our way to Bowral and celebrated at Manuela's place (Lorenza's sister), then on Christmas Day we continued a few hours down the Hume and Federal Highways to Rob's brothers place. Both celebrations consisted of the usual over indulging in food and wine, gift giving and the that fine Aussie tradition of a game of backyard cricket with the kids (and bigger kids like Rob, etc.).... read more

Arrived at about 9am and a bit dazed and confused. Trying to locate a shuttle bus to our hotel got us even more confused, but we eventually made it to Hong Kong at about 11am, once booked into our room we discovered the hotel was undergoing a serious make over and there was not much chance of catching a nap with the jack hammers pounding away. Instead we freshened up and decided to go in search of something to eat. There were a few restaurants close to the hotel but they looked very sterile. We noticed a market that had lots of fresh produce and a sign "cooked food upstairs" so we went to take a look. The second floor was crowded with local people eating various types of noodles with chicken, pork, etc. The place ... read more

We were woken about 7.45am when Caroline knocked on our door and gave us a kiss goodbye. Juliette had already departed a few days before to go on a holiday to Namibia. So, we repacked and contemplated how wonderful it had been to see Jean and Beatrice, plus their family again. It is always very hard to say goodbye to them and we often wish we did not live so far apart. Jean walked with us to the airport bus stop near the Arc de Triomphe, the weather had just started turning cold and grey over the last few days so we again managed to stay in front of any rain. The security guy at the metal detector gate would not stop talking to me about Rugby and what we had done while we were in ... read more

Château de Versailles If you are in Paris make sure you make the effort to get to Versailles - the former home of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI. This is our second visit and we still have not managed to take it all in. Al and Melissa had to get back to Gare du Nord for their train to London so we did not get to explore as much as we may have liked, but that just leaves us more to look at next visit. 22nd October 2007 - Giuseppe Arcimboldo Together with Jean and Beatrice, we went to an exhibition at the Musée de Luxembourg. The exhibition of paintings by a 16th century Italian artist - Giuseppe Arcimboldo. His work was amazing, his portraits use vegetables and plants painted in such a way as to ... read more

Chinon and Joan of Arc What an incredible area - I think it was once considered to be the play ground of the French Royals and it is easy to see why. They certainly knew how to build some every impressive holiday homes! Chinon was really interesting because of the history connected with Joan of Arc. They are doing a lot of work to restore this particular chateau and I am sure it is a very daunting task. The Joan of Arc museum was really interesting and reminded us of the story surrounding this incredible woman. It is still amazing how determined she was to follow what she believed in. It is no wonder France adopted her as the nations patron saint. Lorenza lights a candle in Joan’s honor at the foot of her statue, every ... read more
