Hi everyone, Hows everyone doing??? (Thats an offer for you all to comment and let me know...) Life is much the same in Melbourne. I am now the second longest resident in the hostel - can't decide if that's a good or bad thing, but it's still a lot of fun. There is a continual debate in my head over the pluses and minuses of finding a house and it comes down to this: If i move out I will have a much quieter life and meet much less people, BUT I would have my own room and proper cooking facilities. Hmmm, somehow that made it all sound so simple. Anyway, below is a picture of my bed (the lower one). As you can see mum, I am still an incredibley messy person. Organised disaster, yup, ... read more

Hi Everyone! For those of you who have been on tenterhooks awaiting the next thrilling instalment of 'Pork', I can only whole heartedly apologise. There are many excuses though for this monstrous oversight. Actually, oversight is the wrong word really. Pretty much the reason is the in the title. Since getting the job here I've been doing the full time work, including last Sunday as well, which are fairly big system shocks after 8 months with no routine, except for forcing myself up early for the latest plane, train or auto mobile. Over the past 5 weeks I've spent most of my free time unsurprisingly with people from the hostel, here's a few of the long termers: James (Australian), Bert (Belgium), Ricky (English), Kevin (Irish), Johan (Sweden), Dan (Sweden), Jess (Sweden), Christoph (France), Nikki (Holland), Marye ... read more

Hi Folks, After the phonecall on monday I went on a mission to buy a second set of work clothes and managed to move into 6 bed room in hope of sleeping well for a change. Didn't work, barely spelt so pottered off to work on tuesday feeling semi-dead! Found my way into the office, saw Rick at his desk and introduced myself to the accountant Khang. Was shown around the office by Richard (working now so he's Richard, not Rick). It's a small office I guess, the accountants room at one end, the CEO's at the other with a few good sized booths split into pair for potentially 6 people. The company is the Institue of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia and I work at the national head office. We run courses to train people to ... read more

Start working tomorrow morning at 9.30, data entry (not so cool or fun) but being paid well and it's close to where I'm staying so WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Working for the same company as Rick, could be a lot worse! No more goon!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UPDATE: Figured I'd do some sight-seeing on the weekend, but unsuprisingly goon took over and was out friday and saturday night. Got ID'd friday night (I'm 24 not f'ing 17!!!!). Both good nights out. Other than that I've been doing as everyone does here, sitting on my fat ass watching tv or films depending on whether I'm upstairs or downstairs. Moved out of the giant 14 person dorm into a nice 6 person one in hope of a decent night sleep, fingers crossed on that one. Also I have a new memory card for my ... read more

Hi All, OK, the big shopping trip. Well not being an experienced or fan of shopping this was never going to be my favourite day ever, but sure is a good way of getting to know the city! Australian size clothes are big. I guess your average Aussie is bigger than us little English folk or perhaps I shrank after finally having a good wash. Extra small shirt size and size 9 shoes instead of 10/11's! Shoes here (as Rick completely agreed) are just weird, all fat at the back so your foot falls out, but I digress. Wednesday night was planned out as a quiet one after I had to send my new trousers (pants) off to get altered and so couldn't job hunt on Thursday, thereby freeing up a day that I could sight ... read more

Hi Bums who don't comment (mum excluded!) First thing, whilst waiting in Singapore airport (for forever as I managed to arrive crazy early as some sort of balance for arriving at Jakarta far too late...) the Fulham football team walked past me, kept me entertained for a while! Flew to Sydney via Adelaide and arrived eventually on 4th July about 10am. Australian immigration is generally regarded as being completely brutal and after I collected my luggage and saw the tremendous queue to have luggage x-rayed and for everyone to make their declarations I was a bit worried (even if I had cleaned my boots with a toothbrush). However, after making my way through most of the queue and showing someone that my arrival card had only one 'dodgy' item on it, a yak bone necklace from ... read more

Getting to Surabaya, Java from Kuta, Bali Journey journey journey, not only a cheesily cool American band but what I seem to have done non stop for a week now. Bus, boat, bus to Surabaya in Java taking about 13 hours only to be left at a bus station 12km south of the city centre. Shrugged off the taxi drivers and found a local bus to the centre. Conductor told me when to get off and pointed me in the direction of the street I wanted. He was wrong, a theme that reoccurs in this massive city. Now at about 6am I find myself slightly lost and so after talking to a few locals who barely speak English, I grabbed a cyclo to my planned guesthouse. Surabaya is a pain in that it's huge but not ... read more

Selemat Detang! Spent the flight to Denpasar talking to a lovely lady from Singapore. A former company director who got fed up of the chase and decided to become a Yoga instructor instead. She was en-route to Bali for a two night holiday. I just figured I'd let you all know that slightly pointless story as it seems to sum up Singapore quite well. Thinking about it though; a return flight to Bali is about 50 quid and that is cheaper than a day return on the train from Hereford to London, takes less time too.... Kuta, Bali Spent two nights in Kuta, Bali. Kuta is the area of Bali where pretty much all holiday makers throw themselves towards - it is rammed full of west coast Aussies (flying here is cheaper and takes less time ... read more

Finally, the catch up can be completed... Crossed the border by bus with Cate and after possibly the slowest ever admission into a country from a man so involved with his work he even checked to make sure the photocopy he made of the passport matched the passport we headed to the same guesthouse as Lyndsay and Gemma. Spent the first evening doing jack-all as i still couldn't drink and left the 3 girls and an Italian, Paulo to head off to Clarke Quay and the clubs. I wandered around the block extremely effed off and went to bed. Alas! Sleep did me good and I joined Lyndsay, Gem and Paulo on a fairly random day around the city. First up was Little Arabia, a nice clean place with a funky temple. Lyndsay confused a local ... read more
