South America » Paraguay June 16th 2011

Ciudad del Este Ciaran and I left the hostel in Foz and jumped on a city bus to the Friendship Bridge which spans the Río Paraná, the bordering river between Brazil and Paraguay. As soon the bus had approached, the air had grown sour. For once it wasn't due to a trouser ghost.. The pollution in the air was horrendous. Car upon bus upon truck upon motorbike, vehicles covered the whole area, all pumping out low grade petrol. This border crossing is insane. Crossing the bridge on foot should be done with a gas mask and a good idea of the hell that is to be entered. Massive billboards advertising every brand under the sun litter the smog ridden skyline of Ciudad. A neon sign for Coca Cola or Adidas standing tall over this Paraguayan side ... read more

As with Rio, this blog begins with a flight and its conclusion. The scenery changed fantastically after leaving the beaches and the favelas of Rio. I was above pure green forest. As the plane came to land, I caught a glimpse of a huge field of mist rising between a break in the trees. This was my first indication of the sheer size of the falls. Over the past few years I have definitely been far more traveller than anything else, other than perhaps a bum. As a consequence it may seem strange that I virtually never watch any travel programs. It's a simple principle of hoping that I will reach every place that I want one day and wanting to retain the surprises of the places that these places may hold. The falls are one ... read more

The First Evening I landed bumpily into on Rio Monday 6 June 2011. It took about 10 minutes longer than I thought it would, on the scale that may not seem like much, But, at the speed that a plane travels at, consider it a reflection upon just how massive this mountainous, forested beach city is. After much faffing about and confusion over which floor of the airport I was on, I found myself on the bus to Praia Ipanema. Whilst almost everyone has heard of Praia Copacabana, as with the case of Bondi Beach in Sydney, it is not the best beach in the city. Ipanema is to Rio, as Manley is to Sydney. On arrival at the Che Largarto hostel here, I was promptly screwed over on the price and paid far too much ... read more

So shock horror, within the first first month I am pathetically behind in writing this blog. Finding time to summarise what you've been doing, whilst you've not been doing anything hugely significant is difficult. It has taken a bout of deadly man-flu to make time, and I shall endeavor to not completely bore the arse off my few readers... Ines was working for the most part during my week in Salvador, which gave me plenty of opportunity to be flat out lazy. My second full day in Brazil, she was working in the morning, so I weighed up my options and decided instead to eat breakfast and lounge on the balcony, watching the sea. Very energetic that sea, made me tired. When Ines arrived, we took a bus to Pelourinho (Pelo). Some Salvador background..... Salvador is ... read more

I admit the last post was something of a weak scam. I never made it to Salvador during it. Feel free to take that as a reflection of just how f*****g long a journey it was over the Atlantic. I digress... Exiting Salvador airport made me extremely happy for so many reasons, though the largest contribution was undoubtedly thanks to being greeted by the smiling familiar face of Ines. I don't know for certain, but I imagine the smile disappeared when we hugged and she caught a whiff of me... We took the local bus vaguely in the direction of Barra and seemed to meander for quite some which allowed us to catch up on events over the past several months. This was broken up by the sounds of several shots being fired which caused my ... read more

3 months after booking my Condor flight to Salvador I reached Birmingham airport with my parents. As seems to be tradition of me going anywhere, I was nicely hungover when I check in my backpack and sat down for a farewell snack. There were no tears on departure this time round, just a farewell for 5 months until I am due to meet my parents in Florida. Getting to Florida in 5 months is the mission this time round. I am due to fly from Bogota, Columbia and have five months to get there from north-east Brazil with whatever entertainment I can find on the way. Of course, I have another tradition to follow, which is once again to do it alll on a pitiful budget. I began the always dull preflight time circled the airport, ... read more

At Hobart airport I decided that I didn't want to leave Australia without a 2nd year visa. On arrival back in Melbourne I caught up with people, had some nights out, had a BBQ and a day at the beach before confirming some work strawberry picking in Tasmania and insanely flying back only 5 days after leaving. I flew back into Hobart early in the morning following a very late night in Melbourne. On landing I went straight back to my previous hostel Narrara Backpackers and the always fantastic owner Moe informed me that my Spanish friend Javier had just left to get the bus to go up Mount Wellington. I had the worlds quickest shower and headed for the nearest bus stop. He was pretty surprised to see me climb on board! We repeated the ... read more

Soooo, I flew to Tasmania the day before Julia left Melbourne - I guess I was doing what would be easier for me. Leaving Melbourne was incredibly hard, but the idea of going to a new place was pretty spectacular motivation. Tasmania is a state of Australia (if you didn't know) and is an island that is tiny compared with the mainland and probably have the size of England. I flew into the capital, Hobart. Hobart is built around a beautiful large bay in South Tasmania and was the first place that the UK decided to send some of its convicts. Thanks to this, Hobart resembles a city in the Midlands, very similar buildings, statues and monuments. The harbour itself is quite beautiful, the boats and bays, the water and the Tasman Bridge all helping the ... read more

I shall attempt to cover the past several months since my last update as quickly as possible; this isn’t going to be overly easy though, so forgive me… July to Early December I lived in Melbourne Connection Backpackers hostel from my second day in Australia, 5 July until early November. During this time, several different groups passed through, but this never stopped the hostel from feeling like a family away from home. It is probably not the nicest hostel in the world and not the cheapest either, But thanks to being in Melbourne, from being small and due to the many people who couldn't persuade themselves to move on. There is a Melbourne 'thing'. I have a bit of a theory though about it. Basically it's too easy for people to go travelling, although there is ... read more

Today is 1 year since I left England. I cannot believe it. I will write a decent update in the near future, but for the moment I am going to have a quick drink with me gal and then head off to meet Pete who's flown from England to hang out for a short while. Happy Times!... read more
