A person’s stripes are inside; those of a tiger are outside… ~ Lao Proverb HE SAID... Today we were arriving in the calm and alluring township of Luang Prabang. After another full day on the Mekong in a long wooden slow boat (we’d pushed off the riverbank at Pak Beng about eight hours earlier), we arrived at a berthing area for slow boats just outside Luang Prabang in the early evening. We clambered onto the riverbank, struggled up a particularly steep set of stairs to the roadside and jumped into a waiting minibus – we were heading to Legend Hotel, our comfortable accommodation in Luang Prabang for the next three nights. In the lead up to this trip, I found time to read A Dragon Apparent – Travels in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam by Norman Lewis. ... read more

At high tide the fish eat ants; at low tide the ants eat fish… ~ Lao Proverb HE SAID... Today we were travelling northeast, then east, then south from Pak Beng to Luang Prabang. After a restless night (thanks to the Happy Smoking and Happy Balloons on offer at a nearby bar that lured every young backpacker in the village), we woke early in preparation for our second day on the Mekong. It was 5:30am and still dark outside. We organised our packs and then headed down to BKC Villa’s dining area for breakfast. We enjoyed a selection of fresh fruit (mango, pineapple and dragon fruit), empanadas, omelettes, bread, pancakes, tea and orange cordial. It was a basic breakfast, but perfect for our long day ahead on the Mekong. Feeling suitably refreshed, we handed our packs ... read more

One has to cross upstream, higher up, to come downstream properly… ~ Lao Proverb HE SAID... Today we were travelling southeast from Chiang Khong (Thailand) to Pak Beng(Laos). We woke early (5:30am) to catch the sunrise and prepare for an early morning border crossing into Laos. We headed down to the breakfast area of our guesthouse (which was located on the river bank) and settled at a long thin bar table overlooking the Mekong. We helped ourselves from the Bain Marie, piling our plates with stir-fried chicken, stir-fried pork, fried rice and fried eggs. I also enjoyed a small bowl of banana and yoghurt, which was very welcome – it was the first yoghurt I’d tried since arriving in Thailand. Unfortunately, the weak tea and orange cordial weren’t terribly appetising at 7am, and nor was the ... read more

Friends for a meal are easy to find, friends until the end of life are difficult to find… ~ Thai Proverb HE SAID... Today we were travelling northeast from Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong (via Chiang Rai). We were awake at 5:30am. We had an early start to Chiang Khong, and we had to organise our packs and pick up some breakfast beforehand. I headed out to a nearby 7-Eleven store to pick up some banana muffins and Thai milk tea, as it was too early to settle at a café. It was enough to get us started for the day. We checked out of the People Place Hotel (our accommodation for the past two nights in Chiang Mai), jumped into a minibus and sped off towards Chiang Rai at 8am sharp. It didn’t take long ... read more

It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop… ~ Thai Proverb HE SAID... Today we were continuing to explore the tranquil city of Chiang Mai. I woke early and used the quiet morning stillness to proofread and edit a work-related quotation request we’d received hours before leaving Australia, and one that I so desperately wanted to finish. We left our hotel (the People Place Hotel) at 8:30am in search of a breakfast café that had been recommended in our Lonely Planet guide, but alas, couldn’t find it. We received some very helpful directions from a young local boy on his way to school, although I should point out that he had no choice in the matter. We’d actually approached his friendly mother for directions, and she told him to ... read more

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now… ~ Thai Proverb HE SAID... Today we were travelling north from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. Having spent the morning exploring Bangkok’s khlongs (canals) in a long wooden boat and ambling through the serene but crowded Wat Pho temple complex, we returned to Siam Champs-Elyseesi Unique Hotel to prepare for our overnight train to Chiang Mai. We settled on thick wooden chairs in a comfy hotel alcove and worked on our travel notes, only venturing into the searing afternoon heat to pick up some snacks from a nearby 7-Eleven store. It was a great place to reflect on our time in Bangkok, and to prepare for our northward journey. In the late afternoon (around 4pm) we jumped into a minibus ... read more

Wait until the tree has fallen before you jump over it… ~ Thai Proverb HE SAID... Today we were continuing to explore the bustling city of Bangkok. Having explored a few old haunts on our first day in Bangkok, we’d succumbed to jet lag and crashed early, which often occurs when travel exhaustion and unrelenting heat collide. It’s such a heady mix. But here I was, wide awake at 3:30am the following morning, my body clock struggling to adjust to Indochina Time. I decided to start work on a quotation request we’d received hours before leaving Australia. It was a major project, and one we couldn’t ignore. Unfortunately, the submission deadline was 29 January – the day before our return flight home. I had to prepare it as we travelled through Thailand and Laos, and my ... read more

There are no short cuts to any place worth going… ~ Thai Proverb HE SAID... We touched down at Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bangkok) at 5:30am, and we were seriously excited. We were about to embark on our Thailand and Laos adventure. It took us a while to navigate the large crowds at the customs counters, but it wasn’t too arduous. When we finally found the first floor exit (after some well-meaning but inaccurate advice sent us in the wrong direction), we caught a public bus to Banglamphu in the heart of Bangkok. It was a great (and cheap) way to travel into the chaotic city, and our stress levels dropped considerably when the friendly ticket attendant promised to let us know when our stop was coming up. We clambered off the bus, donned our packs and tried ... read more

HE SAID... We weren’t meant to be travelling to Thailand and Laos, but a series of events fortuitously conspired to send us to the northern climes of these two Southeast Asian countries. In November 2017 we booked a trip to Colombia. We were scheduled to travel in April 2018, and we were excited. However, a client asked us to undertake a major project in the first half of 2018, so we had to cancel Colombia. We were lucky enough to travel to Eastern Europe later in the year, and our adventures in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria were fantastic, so we didn’t regret the change of plan. In September 2019 we booked a trip to Colombia. We were scheduled to travel in March 2020, and we were excited. However, a client asked us to undertake a major ... read more

There is no other happiness but peace ~ Thai Proverb One piece of wood will not make a fire ~ Lao Proverb Sawadee and Sabaidee people! This wasn’t the plan for 2020. But the fickle finger of fate prodded us yet again, and here we are, a day away from a trip back to Thailand, and our first visit to Laos! The second half of 2019 had been an all-round shocker. To say it was less than awesome would be an understatement. And to top it all, it looked like we had to cancel our planned March 2020 to visit South America for work reasons. We were quite miserable about this prospect, but the travel gods smiled on us and presented us with a three week gap in January… and so this trip was born! We ... read more
