Bali
I think you are now starting to see the hectic parts of Bali. And the altercation drama and incident! More hectic haha

Bali traditions
Issy went to Bali with a group of artists and stayed in a small village. There was a funeral while they were there, and the villagers were very insistent that the whole group get involved in the ceremony. Sounds like it's the same with weddings. We got dragged into a ridiculously unethical dolphin viewing in Mauritius - lots of mostly Asian people, many of whom looked like they were trying to jump onto the backs of the dolphins from boats. We were horrified. Respect for the globe's precious animals seems far from universal!

Mount Batur
An electrical fire in the ceiling above your room?? Ugh. And pigs squealing at you all night....

snorkelling trip

Best snorkelling ever
The best snorkelling I have ever done was in Indonesia. I was on a tour from Lombok to Komodo. On the way we took a break in a strait between two islands where we could swim and snorkel. I have never seen such a variety of corals anywhere. It was unbeliveable. Also the time caused a slight current in the strait. So all you had to do was to lie still in the water and the current slowly transported you over the coral beds. /Ake

Sulphur and stains
When we visited Dominica we had the chance of entering a natural spa pool. After we had spent a few minutes in the water the guide looked at me with a bit of panic in his eyes and told me that the sulphur content in the water was high and that the sulphur had reacted with the silver in my necklace. The necklace was pitch black! There was no harm done though. The silver sulphide rubbed off by itself and after a week or so the necklace was all silvery again. /Ake

Cultural highlights
I have found the best and most touching cultural encounters are the ones encountered by chance, how lucky to witness this auspicious temple day. All the best for the last stop on your adventures.

Redgum came to my mind
When I read your blog entry an old song popped up in my mind - I've Been To Bali Too by Redgum. I checked the lyrics and the song seem to be more about partying in Kuta than driving around rural mountain roads and seeing volcanoes. /Ake

snakeskin fruit

Snakeskin fruit
Maybe I have seen snakeskin fruits at some time of my life but it is certainly not something I remember. I really like exotic fruits and I try to eat when I have the chance. So I might have had some without knowing the name of it. But, as I said, in that case I don't remember it. /Ake

Reminds me of Lombok
Your photos reminds me of a lovely place I visited on Lombok. I and a friend stayed there for two nights I think and we made walkes in the surrounding areas and through the villages. I loved it there those days. Thanks for bringing back nice memories. /Ake

Homestay
Sounds like this was a brilliant experience. Did you ever find out why some of the others in your group weren't quite so happy with their own experiences? Just luck of the draw possibly?

"Lamentable Traits"
Sounds like an interesting topic?? Do we know why the farmers don't like Lucy, or was Newman just making that up?

Flying dresses
When we went to Ubud we somehow got sucked into going to an experience called the Giant Swing, which was just about as underwhelming as anything's possible to be - you might just as well have been in a kids playground back home, except the scenery was slightly better. Must be a "thing" in this neck of the woods. Creepy guys in black owning resorts????? Ugh.

Hiking with a group
We don't enjoy hiking with a group as sometimes we want to go faster but usually want to go a bit slower. As we age we need to watch the path more carefully. I'm sorry your legs gave out. I understand Andrew not wanting to hike without you. The journey is the goal not the destination. It sounds like you had a lovely quiet moment to contemplate.

Sanur Beach
I laughed early in this blog when Sanur was called a bustling town. Many of these photos are not reminiscent of what we saw and experienced in 2007. Time marches on and progress is made. We were on a ten month sojourn around the world and spent a week in Sanur resting from our travels. We booked into a new hotel resort that had two large pools and a swim up bar. We spent our first two days in the pool before venturing out. We saw all there was to see in a short period of time. We enjoyed the temples and headed back for more R&R. Sanur gives us a smile as it refreshed us. We were happy our room was far from the pool. We enjoyed walking the beaches.

More Over Tourism
Yet more evidence if any was needed of the risk of the tourists ruining a wonderful culture. And what is it with these Instagrammers???

homestay - breakfast

Homestay
We did some homesteads in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan and enjoyed the experience. The kindness of people around the world should not be underestimated. Enjoy the travels.

Marine reserve
I fear that without Reserves we will destroy every last corner of our marine environment. The situation is already dire in warmer parts of the ocean, see it while you can.

Re: Marine reserve
I agree with you Chris. It's a sad situation, but there is more awareness now than 40 or 50 years ago... and I'm hopeful that the rate of damage will be less as a result :)

Dolphins
We were in Lovina in 2007 and did go out to see the dolphins. Back then I didn't give much thought to responsible tourism, I had not evolved, but I will say they stayed a respectful distance away from the wildlife. At that time there were No Tour Groups. Through word of mouth at your hotel they found a local guy who came on a moped to pick us up. He had an outrigger boat that held two people with a tiny engine on it that puttered in the water. The dolphins moved much faster than we did. There were about 10 of these boats out in the bay each morning. This was not big business. It was a joy to see the dolphins swim in the early morning sunlight. Being one of these people who went I can tell you they kept a distance from the animals that felt appropriate.

Re: Dolphins
I'd say that tourism was a different beast in Bali back in 2007 (like anywhere in the world I suppose). Now there are tours advertised everywhere and they go out in droves and hound the dolphins. Intrepid has a huge focus on responsible travel and we usually take our cues from them; but I'd also read in many other places that until the government regulates the tour numbers and boat behaiviour - there were concerns not just for the dolphins, but also for the safety of the tourists. Sadly, nothing will likely change until there's an accident :(
