Oceania December 11th 2022

Woke reasonably early this morning, sat out on the private deck with a cup of coffee before heading having a final swim before we packed up to leave Port Douglas, the town was very busy as there was a Sunday market at the harbour, we would have stopped for a look around put had around 450km to cover today so gave it a miss. We did a quick stop along the Captain Cook Highway heading back down to Cairns when we spotted an area where people had built numerous rock piles, again we marveled at how lovely this coast line is. Once we cleared Cairns the land opened out and all you could see for miles around were fields of Sugar Cane, the whole area has a network of narrow gauge railways that they use for ... read more

We set off for Cape Tribulation this morning, another lovely sunny (very hot!) day although they were predicting cloud and potential thunder and lightening today. Our accomodation has an underground car park which we thought would be great for keeping the car cool. Apparently, this is an impossible feat in this area and even in the subterranean car park it was 32 degrees! The drive out was once again on the lovely, picturesque road that you essentially have to go back up again once you get out of Port Douglas in order to get up to Cape Tribulation. We passed a few places that we thought would be good to stop off at on our return journey time permitting. We were enjoying the drive and about an hour in, as we were approaching the Daintree Ferry ... read more

Today was our last opportunity to use our 3 day ticket at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures so we set off aiming to get there in time for the 9am activities. They predicated rain and thunder/lightening today, but it was sunny, clear blue sky and 29 degrees already! The drive back down from Port Douglas along the coast is probably one of the prettiest roads we’ve ever been on. At times, you are right next to the incredible blue water lapping onto a very narrow strip of beach. I don’t think you could ever get bored of driving down it. It’s not all perfect though, they’re doing roadworks at the moment removing fallen rocks and unstable rocky overhangs and the size of the boulders they’ve dislodged are massive! They block half the road! We got to our destination ... read more

We woke up to another cloudless sky and souring temperatures today, which was good as we had a trip booked to the Barrier Reef today. First port of call was to reception so that we could extend our stay at Port Douglas by an extra night as it is such a nice place and we have lots we want to do. Then we headed down to the marina to check in with Quicksilver and collect our boarding passes. The tour was quite busy but there was still plenty of room on the boat and complimentary tea and coffee until we left the birth at 10am. An hour and a half later we arrived at the activity platform on the Agincourt Reef, at the northern tip of the Great Barrier Reef. The main plan for the trip ... read more

We’d booked a trip on the Skyrail today, our outward gondola journey was booked for 9:30am so we were up and out by 9am to travel the 15mins from last nights accommodation to the Smithfield station. It’s a hot one today! Already 34 degrees by 9am! Unfortunately, there were no parking spaces in the shade at the terminal, so we had to leave the car and all our belongings in full sun. Just as we pulled up a coach arrived, so we rushed over and managed to get scanned in before the rush. There was no queue at all so we went straight through and jumped aboard our first gondola. The first stop is Red Peak station where you have to change as there are actually two different gondola cable runs. At this stop there was ... read more

Travel day today, so nothing really exciting to say. We repacked our cases and hand luggage ready for the flight to Cairns then relaxed until we had to be out of the room at 10am. We were very close to the airport so by 10:15am we’d dropped off the car and made our way to check in. We were flying Virgin Australia this time and it was a very quick and easy process to drop our bags off and it was lovely jumping the long zig zag queue in the priority security queue! We were through in a few minutes and headed for the lounge. We were pretty early so had about three hours to wait, but it passed really quickly in the comfort of the lounge with a couple of prosecco’s. The flight was only ... read more

What a difference a day makes! After the really hot day yesterday we were a little surprised to wake up to a cloudy sky and a mere 20 degrees outside. In some ways it was a bit of a relief as it was a little too hot to do much yesterday. We didn’t have any set plans today, but thought we’d head over towards Murray Bridge. We ended up at Old Tailem Town, which had lots and lots of replica houses, garages, stores and churches e.t.c. which represent how people lived and worked over the past 100+ years. As we walked in the lady warned us that there were ‘loads of mozzies out there today’ – marvellous! Good job we are now used to the morning routine of sun screen and bug repellent! We wandered around ... read more

Woke up to a lot of activity in Victor Harbour, turns out there was some kind of run going on this morning, but it was pretty much done and dusted by the time we had packed up and left our motel. No surprise they wanted to start and finish early given it was already 33 degrees before 10am this morning! Did we say we wanted more sunshine and warmth??….. I think we spoke too soon! Today we were on the road again….. heading up to Glenelg which is our last stop in Southern Australia before we fly up to Cairns. This was a relatively short drive for us, only just over an hour door to door. Only one real stop off today, which was the Myponga reservoir and dam which meant we got to our next ... read more

We woke up to glorious sunshine here in Victor Harbour this morning so could get dressed for summer for our full day here. We tried to get on a morning boat tour but missed out so booked a shorter trip for the afternoon, we were halfway across the causeway so carried on to Granite Island to see the penguin centre. Unfortunately, even though the room map mentions it, it no longer exists so after a drink in the café we headed back towards town. We were going to use the horsedrawn tram but decided to walk instead, I think it was quicker anyway and saved us $30! We sat and had a quick beer in the Hotel Victor and then headed back to the room, for a bit of lunch and a top up on the ... read more

We saw a kangaroo!!! But this was quite late in the day, there’s plenty more to cover I just couldn’t contain my excitement. Starting at the beginning…. What a beautiful day, can you believe this is the first day we’ve woken up to clear blue skies and sunshine since we arrived! It was 20 degrees at the start of the day and we finally reached the heady heights of 30 degrees today. Summer is finally here – to be fair the locals did say summer starts on 1st December, they were almost right! Today we were leaving Mount Gambier and heading over to Victor Harbour. This is quite a long trek, just over 5 hours drive, around 270 miles without our diversions to see places on the way. We ended up taking about 8 hours in ... read more
