1. Flight Deck
Quick pic in to the flight deck before we left Adalaide Travel day today, so nothing really exciting to say.
We repacked our cases and hand luggage ready for the flight to Cairns then relaxed until we had to be out of the room at 10am. We were very close to the airport so by 10:15am we’d dropped off the car and made our way to check in.
We were flying Virgin Australia this time and it was a very quick and easy process to drop our bags off and it was lovely jumping the long zig zag queue in the priority security queue! We were through in a few minutes and headed for the lounge. We were pretty early so had about three hours to wait, but it passed really quickly in the comfort of the lounge with a couple of prosecco’s.
The flight was only 2hrs 45mins up to Cairns, the scenery on the way was quite a change from what we’re used to. Once the clouds cleared, it was endless wilderness, just totally barren, no civilization in sight. As we got close the landscape changed again to lots of mountains covered with trees, then finally fields of crops as we got near the coast.
Getting
2. Good Bye Adelaide
Leaving Glenelg behind as we take off form Adelaide out of the airport was really quick, this is effectively a domestic flight, so you just walked straight from the plane, through the departure gate area, then out to collect the cases and get the car. There wasn’t even a queue at SIXT so we got the car sorted while waiting for the cases to arrive.
We’re in a gleaming white Toyota RAV4, not as nice as the Skoda we had in New Zealand, but massively better than the Mitsubishi ASX we had from Melbourne to Adelaide. They were going to upgrade us to a BMW X5 M Sport, we got very excited but then had our hopes crushed when they realised we were not returning it to the same airport so had to stick to the RAV4 after all! Oh well, just think of the fuel that would’ve guzzled!
Oh my goodness it’s so hot and humid here! It was 33 degrees when we arrived and the air feels like a hairdryer being blown on your face!
Cairns is quite a big place, as we were getting here quite late, we had pre-booked a cheapish, reasonable looking place to stay the night before heading to Port
3. Skies over Adelaide
The skies over Southern Australia Douglas tomorrow. We arrived at Palm Royale Cairns at around 6pm and were pleasantly surprised to see it was actually quite a nice place. Although the reviews did mention it’s not in an area you’d want to walk around at night, and the warning about locking doors and windows ‘especially in the evenings’ does make you wonder about the area!
Not a problem for us as we’re only here as a bit of a pit stop, we popped out for a McDonalds dinner and a quick stop at Woolworths for some supplies – we may’ve also popped into BWS (the booze part of Woolies) to get some gin too!
It gets dark here so early! By 7pm the sun was well and truly gone. The temperature outside is still really hot and humid though. Thankfully this place has nice cool (if a bit noisy!) air conditioning and a ceiling fan so we should have a comfortable night’s sleep at least.
