1. Tailem Entrance
The entrance to Tailem Town starts you as it means to go on What a difference a day makes! After the really hot day yesterday we were a little surprised to wake up to a cloudy sky and a mere 20 degrees outside. In some ways it was a bit of a relief as it was a little too hot to do much yesterday. We didn’t have any set plans today, but thought we’d head over towards Murray Bridge.
We ended up at Old Tailem Town, which had lots and lots of replica houses, garages, stores and churches e.t.c. which represent how people lived and worked over the past 100+ years. As we walked in the lady warned us that there were ‘loads of mozzies out there today’ – marvellous! Good job we are now used to the morning routine of sun screen and bug repellent!
We wandered around for about two hours in here, it was a really interesting place and other than a few normal flies we’d not really had any issues with the dreaded mosquitos. Once we were done, we walked back into the quaint little tea room entrance and met the friendly staff who asked how we’d found our time there. The guy who owns it, I believe
2. Tailem Street
One of the many historic streets in Tailem his name is Chuck, was very talkative, even recited one of his poems for us, which made it a little hard to get away without appearing rude!
Once we’d escaped, we drove out to the entrance where there was a whole line of old trucks on display as Roy wanted to get a photo. I jumped out too as I thought a nice panoramic shot of the cars would be good for the blog. Only then did I realise where we’d moved to was obviously where all the mosquitoes were! They were literally swarming us and the car, which had the windows open, so they were now filling the car!
Roy drove the car away a bit but they were still all over it so we resorted to batting them out of the windows with our hats – I’m sure it looked very amusing to anyone watching! We drove away hoping the breeze would finish the last few off, even put on the air con as they don’t like the cool air. I think we have escaped from the experience bite free thanks to our Bushman repellent!
Chuck manage to tell Roy about the new Racetrack, The
3. Tailem Blacksmith
The Tailem Blacksmith Shop Bends, that had been built on a bit of land just ten minutes down the road and that it was worth a look in, apparently owned by the OCR forecourt people, so we took a short detour to have a look. There is a hotel above the pit garages and the foyer is filled with exotic new and historic racing cars and bikes. From a ’57 Mercedes, through a Benetton F1 racecar on to a state of the art ’21 Ferrari.
We took a more scenic route home, but although there were some nice little towns and some picturesque views, there’s was nothing overly exciting to stop off at. We did cross the Murray River using the old bridge, which was nice, but they’re renovating it so most of it was covered up!
On our return we filled the car up ready to be dropped off tomorrow, we have noticed that both Australia and New Zealand are generally higher priced for most things than the UK, however fuel is a different matter at $1,62.5 per litre equating to around
90p per litre!! After a lovely home cooked dinner we’re planning on heading out for a
4. Tailem Street
A Tailem street leading to the town garage walk along the seafront, making the most of what has become a lovely evening as the clouds have gone now. Then it’s the dreaded packing of cases to prepare for our flight up to Cairns tomorrow afternoon, before finishing off the beer and wine.
