My friends Rhonda and Andrea were also in Amsterdam and we were playing FB tag via free wi-fi, trying to coordinate. I had decided that if it worked, awesome, if not, all good. So I took a stroll for a couple of hours by myself, just seeing the city that I’ve been wanting to come back to for 21 years. How insane is that? My first international trip was to Mazatlan (2 week beach drop and flop drunk), and then my first backpacking trip to Europe, starting in Amsterdam, which I returned to 3 or 4 times in the same trip. The city just has this relaxing, fun charm. Little bit of something for everyone, from museum goers to strollers, photographers, architecture lovers, and those wonderful illicit coffee shops one can attend, should they choose. (What ... read more

Ah, and away Ned goes on her next adventure. Few of you know this, but I was to leave on March 4th to fly to Tanzania and climb the illustrious Mount Kilimanjaro, up the Machame route. It was an agent special trip (which is unheard of in the industry) and doing a slower route so I was thrilled to get accepted by G Adventures. Regardless it was not to be. Monday Feb 29th (that damn extra day ruined it) I slipped on ice while dog walking and not only crashed backwards feet flying out in front of me, but succeeded in giving myself a concussion and whiplash in my neck. A visit to the ER the next day (yes I'm stubborn) proved that I was injured and I could not climb Kili as the risk of ... read more

Europe » Monaco September 9th 2015

Yesterday we went to Monaco, bought round trip tickets on the train for $10.60E each, and wanted to stop in Eze along the way. We discovered not ALL the trains stop so we went flying by Eze, saw it looked like a wonderful coastline and ended up in this fancy train station in Monaco. Got out and wandered along; noticed how clean it was, how hot it was and yes, how rich it was. Very obviously full of money; we saw what we thought was a 6* hotel and it turned out to be a Cardio Thoracic Clinic – good lord, people have money! You know it and you see it on TV but until you experience it, completely different. We wandered along a little lost, a little in awe and then found the Tourism Board ... read more

Lately, I've have writers block; I realize it is an odd thing to say when you are blogging about adventure and travel and funky things you see; but I can’t seem to put it on paper lately and have been struggling, while relaxing in Nice. I have a feeling it has more to do with Mount Blanc than anything. After Nepal I learned that you leave a piece of your soul on a trek (or at least I do) and often it's hard to express the moments and events that took place to get you from A to B. Do you talk about one foot in front of the other over and over? Questioning every single thing you put in your backpack that now is part of you and making each step heavier. How do you ... read more

Day 1, Aug 25th Hi ho Hi ho it’s off on another adventure I go…. This was written back on Friday Aug 28th, however my lack of internet has kept me from posting until now. However, I shall send it out, and continue on with the journey while I sip wine and eat homemade guacamole from our balcony over looking the Cote d'Azur :-) I love flying. No really. (can you see the sarcasm dripping from the page yet?) In true Ned’s World fashion, I was randomly chosen at security for ‘additional screening’. Year to date I’m at 100% randomly chosen. Pretty cool huh!? It is all computer generated apparently, I think they lie, but cant prove it :-) Second leg has commenced; my flight from Edmonton to Amsterdam was uneventful, which is perfect in my ... read more

Europe » Romania » Muntenia » Bucharest April 25th 2015

Did you know that Romania has the largest population of brown bears in Europe (over 6,500) next to Russia? (Random Ned Fact #47) So hike with caution my friends! Today was our ‘day off’, our rest day from our vacation. How ironic that we felt like we needed a day off from our vacation; however we did. It's been busy, and wonderful at the same time, but behind on blogging, we haven’t really had time to sit back, smell the roses, read a book as we’ve both been so interested in seeing as much as possible while away. These were 4 new countries for Dennis (3 for me) and both of us wanted to absorb as much as possible. Truthfully things are a tad bit fuzzy for me, which is why I keep blogging the most ... read more

Europe » Romania » Muntenia » Bucharest April 24th 2015

Up early as we wanted to skip Bucharest traffic (which I completely understood now!) had breakfast (they had fresh red peppers slices at breakfast so I grabbed a handful for snacking on the coach later!) and asked Hendrik about the possibility of my clothes. He immediate said no, as clients often leave clothes behind to ‘throw away’ so its company policy to either throw them out or if the staff want they can keep. I was flabbergasted (while understanding at the same time) as I knew mine were neatly folded and tucked away; hopefully NOT looking like garbage or unwanted. But he said he would phone the ship; but little to no chance they still existed. I was crushed; not only at the monetary value lost, but again all my fav long sleeved shirts/dress tops and ... read more

Europe » Romania » Muntenia » Bucharest April 23rd 2015

Today was our leaving the ship day; we had a few minutes in bed to have coffee, then coffee. We had (too) quickly packed the night before so it was only a couple of last minute things to add, bags out by 7:45. We had breakfast then left at 09:00 and boarded our coach to go to the famous overly rich, over the top Palace of the Parliament that was built by Ceausescu (and trust me I had to google how to spell that - I was WAY off!). The building itself is 2nd largest in the world, only after the Pentagon, and apparently only by a few feet. It’s enormous and while we only toured about 5% of it - I was exhausted just looking at it. Completely and utterly over the top, Ceausescu built ... read more

Europe » Bulgaria » Rousse Province » Rousse April 22nd 2015

Today was our second day in Bulgaria and we were much further east then yesterday so I was interested to see the landscape differences. Our day trip started at 9am, so we had a bit more of a relaxing morning vs. the usual 8:30 (which isn’t bad either!) As I mentioned last night was the ‘farewell dinner’ despite that we are on the ship for one more evening, it ended up being a 3 hour dinner; truthfully those meals are getting a bit too long for me, but I know most people really enjoy that part of the cruise. I just get restless is all, after all I am a social recluse (as I call myself) and let's face it, half the time I would rather be blogging *wink*. We took a short trip from the ... read more

Europe » Bulgaria » Vidin Province April 21st 2015

Arrived in Bulgaria in the middle of the night, (Country #52) and had a bad sleep so when my alarm went off I felt like I had to swim to the surface of my consciousness just to turn my alarm clock off. Which for those of you who know - I am one of those annoying morning people so I really struggled with that. I fell asleep on route (we left at 08:30) as we had a one hour drive outside of Vidin (where we were docked), to head to the town of Belogradchik (pronounced like it looks - belo-grad-chik) We got to have a quick stop after our drive for coffee and some traditional snacks. We had a sweet and savory treat; the sweet was super yummy, like a tiny rolled cookie with light pastry ... read more
