So the one night we don't have insomnia is the one night we cruise by the super cool Golubac Castle; around 4:30am unfortunately; but honestly if I had remembered we were doing that I would have set an alarm as it's quite impressive! Morning excursion to the archeological Mesolithic (I don't know what's more fun, googling it or saying it - Me-so-lithic LOL) of Lepinski Vir. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lepenski_Vir). Let's face it, Wiki will explain it far better than I will, but suffice to say the highlight was seeing 3 complete skeletons that were in 3 different positions; one laying flat out, one in a sitting position and one who had fallen asleep beside a fire (they guess). SUPER cool! We had a nice walk down a hill, and as the group were meandering to the site I ... read more

I'm so enjoying this holiday; not only is Hippie a wonderful traveling companion, but it's been educational and relaxing and just plain fun. I really wanted to experience a river cruise to better sell it moving forward, and being able to explore destinations I've not yet traveled to made this itinerary that more appealing to me. I also enjoyed exploring Hungary even more; my father is Hungarian and I feel that my roots are here; despite being born and raised Canadian. Being in Hungary reminds me of my grandmother, and her cooking, the decorations in her house and just the sights and smells; I'm sure it's more of an emotional response but it just makes me happy (if that makes sense.) We have now crossed over into Serbia, a country that I have much to learn ... read more

We had a good orientation with Hendrik our Cruise Director the night before, and a lovely dinner where we started meeting some of our fellow ship mates. Some had been on the cruise for a week already; starting in Nuremburg, and we had a collection of Canadian, American, Taiwanese, Australian, Kiwi and Indian, a great group totalling 120. Met all the staff (also very multi-cultural) and felt right at home. We realized that the Avalon Cruise isn’t just about the cabins, the meals, the incredible staff, excursions etc. but also the little attention to detail. The turn down service nightly with (a different) chocolate on our pillow; the international newsletters that Hendrik made every day for the different countries on board with the latest news, the maitre’d checking in on our food requirements nightly and ensuring ... read more

This morning I woke up with optimistic hope; I had to believe that my passport would come in, and I was to call the Embassy between 08:30-09:00 (so, is 08:31 OK??). The previous evening we had gone for a nice long walk along the river; expel some stress energy and continue to explore the beautiful city of Budapest. We walked down to the parliament building (which is an incredible feat of architecture, no matter how many times I see it) and I wanted to get some more photos of the shoes along the riverbed. These shoes are representative of the Jewish individuals who were forced to take off any belongings of any value (including shoes) before they were shot and their bodies fell into the Danube. Yes it's horrible to write that, but we also need ... read more

Slept through the night (which was a blessing in disguise) got up, showered and off to breakfast. I remember mentioning to Hippie I need to do my OCD organize thing - and he was questioning why? We are heading on a coach for a city tour in the morning, nothing to organize really. Good point, I thought, let's eat! So we had a delicious breakfast, then joined the group to head off on our city tour. Being as this was my third trip to Budapest, I knew I would be familiar with the sites, but always interesting to see it from a different set of eyes, and looking forward to seeing it with Hippie as well. The usual suspects were on the list, Hero Square, Buda Castle, Chain Bridge, St. Stephen's Basically, Vaci street and more. ... read more

Hello dear family and friends Well your niece/friend is off again onto her next vacation, exploring strange new words, to see out new life and new civilizations and boldly go where....oh wait. wrong line ;-) I'm off on my very first River Cruise! I am going with Avalon Waterways, and I'm going for 2 reasons (other than I am obsessed with traveling). 1. I really want to experience a River Cruise for the sole purpose of being able to sell it more effectively as they are a hot item these days; and 2. I can go on a river cruise to destinations I've not been before which got me super excited! This will be country number51, 52 and 53, I will keep adding to that eternal passport stamping. I'm doing an Eastern European itinerary - starting ... read more

So, here I sit on September 1st, trying to convince myself that summer is not over. Who am I kidding, it was over about 10 days ago, when a friend of mine conveniently pointed out the fallen leaves on our afternoon walk. To which I called him a foul name and told him he was on crack. D.E.N.I.A.L. Let's be honest here; I live in Alberta, Canada, and while it is one of the best places on earth to be a citizen of, our weather is not, well, tropical by any standards. Sigh. good thing I love my friends SO much! So here I sit in my brand new condo, that I *OWN*! I finally grew up at the tender age of 42 (best year ever) and bought a condo. I might have had a birthday ... read more

Sigh; last day. We had said farewell to Becky and Benny the night before as they had a departure transfer of 07:30. Made plans to meet with Randy and Janice at 08 for breakfast, then decided to wander around, find our new hotels (all of us had to move for our post night), search for carpets and enjoy the morning, with plans to meet Justin at 1pm for lunch in the main square. Well, Old Town Outfitters had given me a map with the hotel marked on said map, even highlighted all pretty like. We found Randy and Janice’s hotel easily enough; other then there being 2 hotels with almost the exact same name one block apart, we knew at least *one* of those was theirs. Then came ours. Let’s just say it was a good ... read more

April 17th (I wrote this before I found out about Opie, so figured it needed to be posted to my dear followers) Yay! Our bike riding excursion to the coffee plantation and the smaller villages was today! Yipee - exercise in the hot blistering sun at 3,500 feet elevation! woot-woot! And once again I booked this! We had breakfast, then walked up to meet OldTown Outfitters and walked a few blocks to get our bikes. Larry’s bike wheel was semi flat and asked to have it filled. The guy couldn’t fill it (kept pssstttttt slowly) and said Gee I have to get you a new bike as your tire is flat. (you think?) Renting bikes in any developing nation is always entertaining; this was not the worst or the best vehicle, however it would do. I ... read more

We were so excited to know that we had 3 nights in the same hotel, and if it wasn’t for the Semana Santa holiday we could have stayed here 4 nights. So nice to actually unpack; knowing you are staying put for a few days, crazy broken shower and all:-) Larry had gotten up early, wandered all the way to the square (about 10-15 minute walk) and brought back REAL good coffee. I was all ‘so where did you go; Guatemala City?” (I thought he was going to the restaurant) and when I looked up and saw the real coffee I squealed. Apparently I was too busy inhaling the coffee to say thank you - so I figured a PUBLIC thank you would help to make up for it!! We had the official city tour with ... read more
