Today began a little on the rainy side. We are relatively high in the mountains so it was clod, foggy and a constant but light drizzle. Glad I brought my Walmart rain suit! I enjoyed a light breakfast of some fresh fruits, breads, coffee and, of course, cocoa tea. I learned to chew the leaves after you make the tea. They are much easier to make a proper mush and they taste far better when boiled, rather than stuffed dry in your mouth. Today we began with an optional tour of a local salt production collective that had been operating since the days of the Inca rulers. We drove high into the mountains and entered the salt mine area called Maras. We learned this was a collective with 400 families participating in the process. The process ... read more

Today was a long day to say the least. Wake up was at 4:30 AM, breakfast at 5 AM and departure at 5:30 AM! We were headed to the Lima airport for a short hop over to Cusco our next port of call. Breakfast was a few bites of roll with some strawberry preserves and a cup of hot java. Not much for the stomach but it was really too early to eat any more. Shortly after breakfast we had our bags in hand and we headed down to the first floor and boarded the bus. Apparently Lima is busy on a Sunday morning, even at this ungodly hour.We dodged the morning commuters and arrived at the airport in plenty of time for our flight. A quick and painless check in and a breeze through security, ... read more

Today began with an excellent buffet breakfast. There was french toast, actually a toasted it tasted and looked like a peanut butter sandwich cut into 4 pieces. There were eggs and cheese scrambled, various fruits, cold cuts and cheeses. There was even sausages and other fine delicacies. Coffee was interesting. When I poured it out of the pot it looked very black and very thick. I assumed it would be bitter so I pulled our 5 sugar packets. I added a little hot milk to the coffee and it lightened up immediately. I added one sugar and tasted, hummmm, pretty good. Not bitter at all in fact it was perfect. Three cups later I was really buzzed! Our tour today was in two parts. Part one was a city tour of Lima followed by lunch then a ... read more

Travel for work or vacation often has it's share of challenges, flying to Peru had its share of both. We departed Toledo right on time at 8:AM for the 54 mile drive to Detroit airport. Traffic was light an the weather beautiful. I had a conference call on my work assignment and things got a little emotional. Nothing bad, my team is just so passionate about what we do that emotions came through. So the drive time flew by quickly and we arrived at 9:00 AM to the car park. A quick bus ride and we were at the check in counter to drop off luggage. No one in line we headed right to the counter and hit our first snag. We were flying Delta to Miami and Avianca to Lima. We each had one checked ... read more

Today marks the last official day of vacation. We spent it in Cambodia and a full day it was. Rick was a little under the weather so he held off on the morning activities, and a good thing he did. This morning it was nearly 90 F with the THI heading to 105F which it hit at 2 PM. The morning was devoted to temples. We toured 4 more temples build by the same King, which they call King #7. He built more than 11 huge temple complexes during his reign, some large and some small. The first he built for his mother. That was huge with many towers and shrines to the Buddah. He was a king that tried to mesh Hinduism with Buddhism, let's say it was a struggle; the people were OK with ... read more

There is much to talk about today, our first full day in Cambodia and our visit to the amazing Angkor Wat complex of temples. First some history. Cambodia was first called the Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 15th century. then, as now, it was ruled by a king. At one time the Khmer Empire was at war with Siam, now called Thailand. The Khmer won the war and decided to name this region Siem Reap, which means Siam lost! The Thai do not like the name of this region of Cambodia too much for obvious reasons! In any event, Cambodia is HOT, and I mean brutally hot. Today the temperature soared over 100F with humidity approaching 90% making this the hottest day we have had so far by a long shot. The heat was ... read more

Today we leave Thailand for three days in Cambodia and the famous Angkor Wat temples and historic sites. Another hearty breakfast, this one at 8:00 am, a civilized time for a man on vacation. Last night we packed everything, and I mean everything we might need for three days in Cambodia into two small backpacks. Since we were coming back to the same hotel in Bangkok, it made no sense to carry all our belongings to Cambodia, go through the hastle of baggage check in and baggage claim twice; when it was just easier to downsize and leave the rest at the Sheraton. I would have loved to claim the idea as mine but it was the ever helpful Tan that proposed the idea. We were is listening to him because this morning at 10:30 when ... read more

Today was another long day, and a hot one. The temperature at breakfast was over 85 degrees and was expected to hit 100 before the day was over. Wake up call was 5:30 am. Whoever said touring was a vacation, obviously never went on a tour! Breakfast was again a sumptuous affair at the buffet tables of the Bangkok Sheraton, the same hotel at which we started our journey many days ago. After breakfast, we headed off to the busses for the long trip to the Floating Market. Our first stop, as usual after two hours driving was the "Happy Room" aka pee pee room! For many a most necessary stop. I must say that all the rest stops were at clean, modern facilities. They were mostly no charge, however, some special locations charged 5 baht ... read more

We were up before the crack of dawn today, 5:30 am and it was already 90 degrees outside, so it was forecast to be a scorcher. I put on a fresh pair of shorts, a wicking shirt and a clean pair of socks and headed toward breakfast. We dropped our bags outside our room for the portage to the bus and walked along the Gecko filled outer halls to breakfast. For some damn reason I turned left instead of right, as was my norm. We followed the path and found ourselves at a crossroads where the dining room was toward our right across the open pond. We turned in the right direction, and as I approached the tables, I attempted to step down and missed, resulting is a gracefull fall into the pond! Yup I was ... read more
