Left England on the hottest June day since 1976, it was ridiculous, fortunately we spent most of it either in the car or in the air conditioned airport lounge! Flight had its moments at one stage the air crew were told to take their seats you know it's properly bumpy when that happens. When I wasn't sitting there with my eyes closed praying I caught up on my movie watching, having watched Moana on my way over I decided Storks was my speed, then started to watch Trolls but it was aimed at kids I think and I gave up! Stephen was sorted the latest series of Vikings, he has saved some for the trip from Dubai to NZ though as 17 hours is a long time to fill. We had left UK at around 8pm ... read more

Had dinner with Stephen's aunt, all was well until after repeatedly saying she wouldn't let out the yappy crazy dogs that hadn't stopped barking since we got there.....she let out the crazy dogs which immediately went totally crazy, barking, snarling and jumping all over us. I was a panicky mess while Stephen did his best to try and contain them with no success at all, his aunt eventually managed to herd them back into the laundry where they started barking incessantly again. Had a great visit otherwise than and went home stuffed full of food! Back at the hotel to settle in properly after just throwing our bags in earlier and a restless night in a very hot non airconditioned room! After yesterday's marathon drive we decided today to try and do secondary roads not the ... read more

Travelling day from Edinburgh to York, called in at a shopping centre on our way south for some essentials before heading to Selkirk in search of some tartan for Rylies kilt. Selkirk seems to be a town that spins tartan and deals in fabrics of all sorts. We found the address we were looking for only for it to be a large tin shed all closed up in an industrial area of town. Tried ringing the phone number that we had been given but it just kept cancelling out, obviously there is an area code we arent using and we don't know it. On the way past we had spotted another fabric barn type place with a cafe so stopped in for lunch and a look around, they did have tartans but none with the colours ... read more

Arrived to freezing cold, pouring rain and a howling half, yep we are in Scotland! Picked up rental car, it's a Skoda....Stephen less than impressed, it's very skodaish....the rear wiper goes on of its own accord and there is no rubber on it, very annoying and probably not great for the back window. Find our hotel fairly easily, we have an awesome view of Edinburgh Castle and within walking distance of the tourist area, restaurants and main shopping street. By the time we get to the hotel we have time for a quick unpack and then a short hike in the driving rain to Howies restaurant for dinner. Very nice, I had their version of a lobster reminded me of a cross between a NZ cray and a Morton Bay Bug, Stephen had a beef pie, ... read more

Day 3 Jenna and Alan picked us up late morning and took us to Kildare Village which is an outlet shopping centre about an hour and a half south east of Dublin. They had lots of good designer shops with heaps of bargains, we were there for about 3 1/ 2 hours and barely did half of it. At one stage we nearly drowned as the rain came down in buckets but cleared up and disappeared like it had never happened 20 minutes later! Purchased a new suitcase to replace the one which the wheel melted on during one of our warmer train days and which we abandoned in Strasbourg. Back to the hotel for a quick shower and change before driving to Johnnie Foxes 'the highest pub in Ireland' where we caught up with Andrea ... read more

We had to check in to our flight to Dublin at around ten to nine and we were staying Near terminal 1 so needed to get the shuttle to terminal 2, decided we wouldn't have time for breakfast so would grab something at the airport lounge as I had bought passes for ten euro thinking it would be a cheap brekkie each. Check in and the guy at the counter said oh your flight is boarding at 9.40.....what the hell it doesn't leave till 10.50 why would they be boarding it over an hour early??? Oh and your gate is at the other end of the airport so you need to hurry.....it's now about 9.15. Thought stuff that, we walked past the lounge so went in and grabbed a very very quick breakfast, and hurried off ... read more

Our train to Frankfurt didn't leave until after lunch and our hotel did a Sunday brunch......YUM! Shrimps, jumbo prawn, crabs, oysters, salads, then beef, chicken and more prawn on the bar b que, as well as lots of dessert choices, wish we had more time just to sit and enjoy but it was a case if eat and run, still good though! Arrived in Frankfurt 4.30pm, staying at a hotel in the airport complex as we are really only here a couple of nights so as to catch the plane to Ireland. The initial plan had been to catch the train back into Frankfurt and spend Monday having a look round, but with Monday being a public holiday we ended up spending the day wandering round the airport shops, which were the only ones open in ... read more

Short stay in Strasbourg Taxi to the train station was way cheaper than the reverse trip from the train station, didn't get charged for luggage for a start and base charge was under 30 francs, proves we had a rip off artist originally. Our train tickets didn't have carriage or seat numbers and we had heaps of time so decided to check it out with the ticket office, turns out our connecting train from Basil to Strasbourg had been cancelled, nice of someone to advise us! Fortunately the gentleman who served us was excellent and he sorted out a new connection which departed less than an hour later than the original one and explained that the station in Basel was undergoing renovation and our train would leave from a platform that was not part of the ... read more

Had a slow start to the day as train to Zurich didn't leave until lunchtime, was expecting lots of tunnels and lots of mountains, got neither! Stephen kept saying I think we are going the wrong way, but we did eventually arrive in Zurich. Get off the train and find the taxi stand, get the first one in line, looks a bit grubby but ok, Stephen asks is he available, yes he says, it will be the taxifare plus 10 francs for the luggage....what???....10 francs for the luggage...well I spose we have no choice, I said, can hardly leave them at the railway station for three days can we, what a bloody rort! The taxi to our hotel was around ten minutes cost us 30 francs for trip plus 10 francs for suitcase.....40 francs all up ... read more

Train to Munich and another Harry Potter carriage, this time with 6 seats all to ourselves the whole way, was awesome I could put all the armrests up and really stretch out. Arrived in Munich early afternoon, managed to walk past our hotel without seeing it, walked about 10 minutes before working out we had missed it retraced our steps and it was a 30 second walk from the train station....idiots! Checked in and was advised that not only was our room ready but we had scored a luxury upgrade.....YAY! The room is huge the bed is huge and it has a big mustard coloured leather chair that Stephen would like to put in his suitcase if he could fit it! Unpacked and headed out to explore, I'm not sure if it's because it's Friday afternoon ... read more
