Don't know what I did when booking but first part of our train journey from Venice to Verona was in executive class. Hilarious, beautiful carriage, with a boardroom, massive seats and enough legroom to fully stretch out. Not many people in this carriage and those that were, obviously business men and women in suits and discussing business type stuff. They definitely looked down their noses at the two tourist types who wheeled in their 3 suitcases and 2 backpacks! Changed trains at Verona and still an adventure as it was a Harry Potter type train with the little 4 seat rooms. Andrea and Garry had an elderly American couple who had lived in Palmerston North for 2 years with them, they chatted the whole way and Stephen and I scored a whole wee room to ourselves, ... read more

Hi, I hope all my friends and family have found my new blog site, I am sorry about the change but unfortunately I had notification that the site I was using would be closing before we made it home next month. Hopefully I can work out how this site works and will be able to still post on Facebook, going to soon find out! Left Rome via train for Venice, easy trip, I wrote my Rome blog the whole way so managed to avoid freeking out over all the tunnels we went through. Arrived at Venice Mestre station to find there were steps to go down with our 3 suitcases and two backpacks And Andrea and Garry with their two large suitcases and small backpacks. Just debating the best way to achieve downstairs when three guys ... read more

Geo: 41.9091, 12.4899 Just finished three days in Rome absolutely shattered, what a city! We arrived in Citavecchia and waited outside in the hot sun for the transfer we had organised, just starting to feel they had forgotten us when he showed up. Very unusual gentleman who Garry nicknamed mr bobble head because the whole time he was driving he nodded up and down up and down. He was ok when he wasn't driving it was just a driving nod! He was also the most disorganised man who had no change for the toll booths he must of known he was going to have to go through. At one he pulled up then realised he couldn't find his change and tried to tell all the cars behind him to back up and let him out....of course ... read more

Geo: 40.84, 14.2529 Had the morning to ourselves so decided to go explore Naples, was quite looking forward to it because last time we were here our whole day was filled with Pomeii and we had no time to do anything else. As we left the terminal we were accosted by a group of taxi drivers trying to talk us in to cheap taxi tours, in the end after a bit of discussion between the four of us and much convincing from a personable young taxi driver, whose English appeared pretty good we agreed to his price and off we went. Once we recovered from the initial horror of Italian drivers, and the complete lack of anyone following what vaguely would pass as a road rule (Naples is apparently the worst city in the world for ... read more

Geo: 38.1922, 15.5566 We went out to Taormina a little hilltop resort town/city close to Mt Etna. The bus ride out was a bit of a challenge for the claustrophobic among us, with miles and miles of tunnels to go through, some if them very dark and very long, then to finish off a windy narrow road clinging to the side of a hill to get to the town, with other buses coming down the other way and roads not wide enough to accommodate them. The tour buses were not allowed to park in their usual park and had to do quick drop offs at the local city bus stop as parts of the city are being closed because the G7 conference is being held there and Donald Trump will be staying. Cops, army and every ... read more

Geo: 37.6556, 21.6129 Slightly later start this morning, didn't need to be ready until 8.45am woohoo extra 3/4 of an hour to sort ourselves out! We were on one of the biggest excursions of the day with three bus loads going to Olympia, we managed to get the last bus which meant we didn't get a whole bus load and the obnoxious children from a few tours earlier were on the bus group ahead of us...yay! We did get some slightly crazy Asian tourists though who when we arrived at Olympia were not with us, they had been on the bus, they had, we thought, got off the bus but were not at the entrance to the Olympia site. An older Asian gentleman finally showed up and said he and his (wife/partner/mother/aunt or whatever she was) ... read more

Geo: 36.4168, 25.4335 Beautiful view out our window this morning, all the white houses clinging to to the top of the cliffs look like snow. We were a bit disappointed (read really really annoyed) as our original excursion, which was a self driven 4 x4 tour was cancelled due to the fact Andrea, Garry and ourselves were the only ones on it, Andrea and Garry's second choice of volcano climbing was also cancelled, the joys of being on a cruise with older people! We spoke to the lady on the excursion desk who said rule of thumb the longer the cruise the older the clientele......no way are we doing anything longer than this for a few years!! If avoiding other people's little darlings......she said avoid cruises with all the bells and whistles.......climbing walls, water parks etc ... read more

Geo: 37.9479, 23.6414 As we did the Acropolis the last time we visited Athens we had decided we would try and find something different to do this time round. The most appealing excursion was entitled Ancient Corinth and a Canal crossing. Stephen was really looking forward to seeing Corinth so we were expecting a pretty good day. Unfortunately had a few issues in leaving the room and nearly missed the excursion altogether as we arrived in the theatre for the usual morning bun fight in getting the tours all organised - were asked as we went in what tour were we on, then got told that's already been called handed our tour stickers and we were on our way. Oops! Not a massive group doing this tour and no kids...hooray! Had a nice sleep through the ... read more

Europe » Malta May 10th 2017

Geo: 35.91, 14.52 Andrea and Garry and ourselves did the same excursion - called 3 cities and a boat ride. Was a good slow start to the day with the boat not docking until 10am so our excursion didn't start until 10.30am. So enjoyed a leisurely brekkie in the nice breakfast room rather than all elbows out in the trough ( buffet). Malta is gorgeous all the buildings made of large yellowy coloured stone, very picturesque. Our first stop was a lovely little fishing village with market stalls, with pretty handmade lacework and textiles, sweets, knick knacks, jewellery, magnets etc. we had half an hour to browse, first sweet stall immediately put me off as the gentleman very kindly gave me a sweet, fortunately before I ate it I worked out it was a prune wrapped ... read more

Geo: 39.2149, 9.1095 Had a bit of a broken nights sleep with the rocking of the boat for most of the night, sea had calmed by morning and it was smooth sailing into port. Up early as we had an excursion Nora -a walk through ancient times. They collect everyone on excursions together in the theatre to organise them into tour groups, there were about 15 people standing in the doorway whilst the tour director gave everyone instructions on how the morning would be organised etc, she must of politely but firmly asked these people ten times to sit down as tour groups would need to exit through this doorway, ignorant shits just completely ignored her, acted as if she hadn't said a word, not sure what advantage they expect to gain by being first in ... read more
