Dubai
The sun through the heat haze Left England on the hottest June day since 1976, it was ridiculous, fortunately we spent most of it either in the car or in the air conditioned airport lounge!
Flight had its moments at one stage the air crew were told to take their seats you know it's properly bumpy when that happens. When I wasn't sitting there with my eyes closed praying I caught up on my movie watching, having watched Moana on my way over I decided Storks was my speed, then started to watch Trolls but it was aimed at kids I think and I gave up! Stephen was sorted the latest series of Vikings, he has saved some for the trip from Dubai to NZ though as 17 hours is a long time to fill.
We had left UK at around 8pm and arrived in Dubai at 5am, had managed only an hours sleep and were shattered by the time we arrived, so checked into the hotel ate a quick breakfast and fell into bed and slept solidly till noon. I had thought we were doing our safari the next day but thought I best check.....PANIC ....today and they are supposedly picking us up at
Dubai
Safari, oops! 2, Stephen rang to confirm and after much tooing and froing worked out they were going to pick us up at 4.30pm, later due to Ramadan.....whew!
Had time for a shower a quick room service sandwich and we were off. There were six of us in our vehicle, a young couple from England and two young girls from Oz, we are the ancients of the group. Quite a drive out to the desert, when you get there they let air out of the tyres and then you are off, we were in the middle of the car, Stephen by the window and me in the very middle, so I get to see clearly through the front windscreen as we go up and over the dunes and coming straight down where it appears they are going to spear the bonnet into the sand. We spent at least an hour and a half duneing.....awesome but scary as shit! I was ok with the up and overs and the bumps not so keen when we slid sideways particularly when you were half way up a dune at the time. We had to get out at one stage while our driver pulled another
Safari
The desert flowers jeep off the top of a dune where he had stuck fast and was just digging big holes under his wheels.
A stop at sunset for photos and a slide down the hill on snowboards for those who wanted to, I wasn't up for standing but happily slid down sitting on it, the hardest bit was climbing back up the sand dune afterwards, exhausting in the 42 degree plus heat. Weird thing was you didnt sweat, I googled it later and apparently you do but it evaporates so quickly you don't notice it, that's until the sun goes down then every part of you drips like a tap!
We then drove sedately down the track to the camp, where we were given some local foods, even I found something I could eat,was all pretty yummy. Then the camel ride for those that wanted to, I bravely got on, lasted about a minute before I less bravely climbed off and gave the camel some weight relief and let Stephen have the camel all to himself....not my thing at all and I don't feel like I missed out on anything good!!!!
We then watched traditional dancer, picked up our
Safari
Sand tobogganing photos from the day and a very sedate drive home. Was an awesome afternoon/evening, was well worth stopping in Dubai for.
A quiet last day with a bit of last minute shopping, a final bag pack and a nana nap in preparation for tomorrow's very early morning and that's our holiday pretty much over, just the long flight home to gear myself up for.
See you all next holiday!
