Tuesday. 29 August, 2017 I was worried about getting a campsite in Yellowstone, but Kerry assured me there were plenty of walk-in sites available. We had a beautiful drive down from the campground to the north entrance at Gardner. At the gate the campgrounds were listed and showed which were already full and which had sites available. We decided Norris would be centrally located and was fairly close to the north entrance. Wouldn't you know, the road was under construction, with one lane traffic and long waits. We estimate it took us 45 minutes to go the 15 or so miles. I was much relieved to see that Norris CG had sites open when we arrived at last. But the fun was just beginning. The woman registering campers was on her second day of working there, ... read more

28 August, 2017 We drove north into Montana, stopping at the visitor center at Hardin. The woman there told us the highway department recommended those pulling campers north use Hwy 3 to avoid steep climbs and 12% descents. That made sense to us, so at Billings we turned north on Hwy 3. After about 90 miles, which only took us about a third of the way up the state, we'd had enough of the smoke. There are wildfires burning in the western part of Montana and the smoke was getting heavier, blurring the views of the mountains. We knew it would get worse the closer we got to the fire areas, which were west of Glacier NP. At that point we gave up on Glacier and turned south, deciding instead to go to Yellowstone NP. We ... read more

Saturday, 26 August, 2017 It was a fairly short drive to Badlands National Park and we arrived around 11 am. We cooled our heels in the Visitor Center until time to check into the campground. Once the camper was set up, we headed for the west end of the park because Kerry wanted to drive to the Prairie Dog Village there. Unfortunately, it was about 5 miles down a washboard gravel road and Kerry had had enough of that after ½ mile. It was hot, hot, with temps up in the low 90's, and no shade in the campground, so we left the windows open on the camper. We've experienced bad weather in the Badlands before, with storms blowing up with little notice, so we kept our eyes on the skies as we enjoyed the beauty ... read more

Wednesday, 23 August, 2017 We are so out of the habit of camping. Hooking up the camper, securing things inside, setting up camp; all had to be relearned. This trip we are heading north for starters. We crossed the Ohio River at Paducah and drove to Cahokia Indian mounds near East St. Louis, IL. Kerry was a bit disappointed, so we didn't stay long, continuing north up the Great River Road in western Illinois. The drive was peaceful and we got nice views of the Great Mississippi along the way. We camped overnight at Pere Marquette SP. Thursday, 24 August, 2017 We continued north along the Great River Road. We crossed the Illinois River at Hardie on a narrow green steel drawbridge. And, as narrow as the bridge is, one lane was closed for bridge work. ... read more

Sunday, 5 July, 2015 It was a fairly uneventful day, the kind we like best. We drove through the rest of New Mexico and the panhandle of Texas. We stopped at the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo so Jenna could add her mark to the cadillacs there. We drove a short way into Oklahoma to Sayre, where they have a wonderful city park with a nice campground for only $12. Monday, 6 July We got through Oklahoma with their lousy roads and into Arkansas. We stopped for the night at Spadra Park Campground, south of Clarksville. It's a lovely Army Corps of Engineers campground on a bluff overlooking the Arkansas River. The river is full and fast moving. Tuesday, 7 July We were happy to get out of Arkansas and then through Memphis. Home sure looks good. ... read more

Thursday, 2 July, 2015 We got out early and drove to Grand Canyon National Park, stopping at Desert View and a few overlooks on the way to Grand Canyon village. We checked at Mather campground for openings, but they were full, so we drove straight to Ten-X campground in Kaibab National Forest, where we set up in a nice campsite. We ate lunch before driving back to the park, hoping the long lines at the entrance had thinned out some. They had. Our first stop was the main visitor center to pick up a Jr. Ranger book for Jenna, then we drove to some more of the eastern overlooks. We worked our way back to the village before 4:00 and went to a Jr. Ranger Program to complete the requirements for Jenna's Jr. Ranger badge. Back ... read more

Monday, 29 June, 2015 Bob and Gena left early on their way east, while we will continue west then south. They had commitments they had to get home for. We miss them already. We drove back through Vernal, with all the pretty flowers, then on to Roosevelt, where we stopped for fuel at a Pilot. But their pumps didn't work and we had to go elsewhere. As we headed south we went over a pass that was over 9100 feet high. It was a pretty steep grade and we were moving pretty slowly by the time we reached the top. The downhill was much faster, but seemed to go on forever. We finally reached the interstate and a little rainfall that dropped the temperature from 97 to 69 degrees, then back up to 94 within twenty ... read more

Sunday, 28 June, 2015 We left Lyman and drove down Hwy 414 and 43 to Manila, UT, and then Hwy 44 to the dam at Flaming Gorge. What a drive! It was wonderful scenery, buy bumpy roads to Manila, then steep, steep ups and downs to the dam. At the Flaming Gorge visitor center they said the road to Vernal, UT, was worse, but it definitely was not. That road (Hwy 191) did have 10 switchbacks (u-turns,) but it was mostly downhill, not those engine-screaming uphills to Flaming Gorge. Vernal was so pretty. They have placed planters of pink, white and red flowers all through town. We drove to Dinosaur National Monument, where we first checked out the visitor center while Jenna got her 6th Jr. Ranger badge. We then rode their shuttle to the Quarry ... read more

Saturday, 27 June, 2015 We left the campground this morning and drove to Craters of the Moon National Monument, about 20 miles from Arco, ID. It is comprised of 750,000 acres of lava. Lava in the form of cinder cones, lava tubes, lava caves, spatter cones, and both smooth flowing (pahoehoe) and rubble-like ('a'a) lava. The area started having eruptions about 15,000 years ago, the latest being about 2,000 years ago. This was not the result of one or two volcanoes, but a series of deep fissures known as the Great Rift. Scientists do think more eruptions are likely. The plants growing from the lava gives the area an other-worldly look. We then drove across southeast Idaho through Blackfoot and Pocatello to southwest Wyoming. We drove through some beautiful valleys green with fields of wheat, hay, ... read more

Sunday, 21 June, 2015 We enjoyed a lazy morning then drove to Jenny Lake. The visitor center was not nearly as crowded as yesterday. We then drove up Signal Mountain with its panoramic views before heading back for showers and dinner. Monday, 22 June We had problems with the electric jack on the camper, as in, it was dead. We finally managed to crank it manually using vice grips. The drive to Yellowstone was magnificent. There was a line of cars and campers waiting to get into the park, but it moved fairly well. We stopped at Grants Village to call Peggy and Barbara for their birthday. There are only 3 or 4 cell towers in the whole park, so cell service is spotty at best. Once at Bridge Bay campground we set up the camper, ... read more
