Sunday morning around 3:00 the wind came up strong and woke us. Then the rain started again. We finally managed to get the camper dried and folded up and got on the road by a little after 9. It was cloudy and rainy all day, so no views of Mt. McKinley again. We drove through Fairbanks, stopping at the Walmart there for groceries. We then went to North Pole, AK, where we bought postcards to send to the little folks and some Christmas ornaments. Then on to Eielson AFB where we stayed at their FamCamp and did laundry. Monday morning the skies are clear, so we head back to Fairbanks in hopes of seeing Mt. McKinley from UAF. We got there and could see lots of mountains in the Alaska Range, but McKinley was as elusive ... read more

We got to the Wilderness Access Center at Denali National Park at 8:45 for our shuttle bus trip that was supposed to leave at 9:15. Our driver was late, maybe 15 or 20 minutes. It had rained all night, a drizzle mostly, but there were puddles everywhere and it was chilly, in the mid 40's. We were happy to board the bus and get in out of the cold, but the heater wasn't doing much on the bus. The bus was only about half full, so it was easy to get window seats. We were going as far as Wonder Lake, a trip of 85 miles each way. There were rest stops and animal viewing stops and mountain viewing stops built into the schedule, making the trip 11 hours long. Since it was raining and the ... read more

On our way out of Trapper Creek we stopped in at Wal*Mike's. If he doesn't have it, you don't need it. He has everything from antacid to zipper oil. A fun place to look around, some antiques, some hardware, tires, t-shirts, antlers, wood stoves, a few souvenirs, and tons of junk. We stopped at a couple of overlooks to get another glimpse of Mt. McKinley, but the clouds had the top totally covered. We could see some of the other mountains in the Alaska Range, but Denali stayed hidden. We ran into a little rain here and there, but not much. We found a campground north of the Denali NP and set up campers and ate lunch before going back to the park. We visited the Wilderness Access Center, where we got tickets to ride the ... read more

We left Seward driving north on the Seward Highway with overcast skies and clouds making haloes around the taller mountains. We stopped at a salmon hatchery for a few minutes and saw lots of baby salmon, some about to be released into nearby creeks. We drove over Moose Pass and past the Sterling Hwy to the Portage Hwy. We stopped at the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center on Portage Lake. There we saw our first icebergs, which had calved off of Portage Glacier. They were the most amazing shade of blue. After the visitor center we drove through a tunnel to a scenic viewpoint where we could see a corner of Portage Glacier and got pretty good views of Shakespeare, Burns, and Byron Glaciers. They were all so beautiful. We then drove back to the Seward Hwy ... read more

We headed back up the Sterling Highway, watching the eagles swoop across the road in front of us. We hadn’t gone very far when Gena pulled over after spotting a big moose. We managed to get a couple of pictures before it ambled off. We stopped at Sterling because we wanted to browse the Alaska Horn and Antler shop we had seen yesterday. They had moose, caribou and elk antlers as well as other types of animal horns, tusks and whale baleen. Some were whole, some were pieces and some were carved with intricate patterns. It was quite a fascinating place. At Moose Pass we turned south on Seward Highway to the town of Seward. There we checked into Seward Resort, the military campground. After setting up the campers and eating lunch, we drove over to ... read more

We left the campground before 8:30 and went to the base outdoor rec office, it was not open until 9. We went to the base post office for stamps, not open until 10. So we just headed on toward Homer. South of Anchorage we drove on the Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet. It was another beautiful drive with snowy mountains and churning waters. At Cooper Landing we were awed by the beautiful blue-green waters of Kenai Lake and the Kenai River. The water is tinted by suspended ultra-fine glacial silt. At Soldotna we finally found a post office and bought stamps and mailed cards. We went more than 3 miles up a road in Ninilchik to a campground, only to turn back after finding out that they charge $10 for a shower. We ... read more

It was drizzly this morning, but the rain stopped long enough for us to close up the camper. We drove west on the Glenn Highway with low clouds and frequent showers, making the scenic overlooks a waste of time. The rain finally quit and the skies cleared somewhat just before we reached Matanuska Glacier SP. Matanuska Glacier is a valley glacier, which means it exists on a valley floor, as opposed to the smaller alpine glaciers that hang off mountain slopes. Most of the glaciers in Alaska are alpine glaciers. Matanuska Glacier is 24 miles long and 4 miles wide at its terminus, averaging about 2 miles in width. It is an active glacier and advances one foot per day. We took some pictures from the state park viewing area and Kerry noticed a road down ... read more

We all got in the van (Moe, too) and headed south on Highway 4, Richardson Highway. The skies were pretty clear and we stopped at a couple of overlooks to get pictures of the top of Mt. Drum, which we couldn't see yesterday for the clouds. Later, the beautiful snow-covered Chugach Mountains came into view with their many glaciers. We stopped at Worthington Glacier SP to walk fairly close to a glacier. We really did get a kick out of seeing a glacier up close. The funny thing was, there were seagulls swimming in the cold waters of the glacial pond, between the sheets of ice. After crossing Thompson Pass, there was a pulloff with a spectacular 360 degree view of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. It was awesome. We then drove through Keystone Canyon with ... read more

We drove all over Tok (population 1,393) looking for a tire for our camper. We finally found one at the fourth tire and rv repair place we tried. We bought two tires, and had just one of them mounted, so now we feel secure again. We finally left Tok, heading toward Glennallen on the Tok Cutoff. The road climbs up from the Tanana River drainage through Mentasta Pass in the Alaska Range, and along the Copper River. The distant snow-covered Wrangell Mountains were often visible as we drove through woodlands of black spruce and aspen. We set up the campers in Glennallen, then drove to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park's visitor center at Copper Center. Its a very nice visitor center with great displays. Not far out of Haines Junction on the Alaska Highway, an immature bald eagle swooped across the road in front of our car, grabbed something out of the weeds on the side of the road, and flew off. I knew right then this was going to be a day for spotting wildlife. Around Kluane Lake, a beautiful lake that goes on for miles, Gena spotted a bear. It was a grizzly just strolling down the path. It came up the side road, crossed in front of our car (which was stopped off the side of the road,) then turned down the highway and ambled past us. It stopped next to us, stood up on its hind legs, looked around, then went on down the road. What a thrill! A short while later, Bob spotted a coyote ... read more
