We left on Tuesday morning and stopped for the night at Marsh Creek, an anchorage we'd always wanted to try. It was a beautiful spot, quiet and off the river. There was a dredge working near the mouth of the creek, but they quit around 4:30 and we enjoyed the peacefulness and the solitude. The next morning we were greeted with fog, which cleared out by mid morning. We were surprised when we got back on the river that the fog had not cleared there yet. It didn't take long until it burned away except for a few wisps of low fog and some interesting-looking fog tubes that swirled up and then dissipated. After all the heavy rains down south, both Pickwick Dam and Kentucky Dam are spilling until further notice. This means we had a ... read more

Wednesday morning, after breakfast, I headed to Greenville, Ohio, and the Garst Museum. I left Kerry and Ethan at the campground to entertain each other with the swimming pool, ping pong table and basketball. The Garst Museum is a good source of Genealogy information for Darke County, where my father was born, as well as surrounding Ohio counties. The folks there were helpful and pointed me in the right direction to get started. I found a lot of info I was looking for, and as usual, more questions. I did find out my great-great-grandfather Saylor was married 3 times. And my great-great-grandfather Wallace was born in Scotland. I found some names and dates I didn't have and hit brick walls on others. More searching is ahead. I left the museum and drove back to the campground ... read more

Monday, 13 July, 2009 Western Pennsylvania is beautiful and green, a very nice drive this morning. Then we got into Ohio, not special. It looks like just about anywhere, flat and fairly forgettable. We did stop in Wadsworth at a Walmart, but Wadsworth is just not the same since Mary Saylor left. We stopped for the night just north of Columbus at a nice campground at Marengo, where Kerry and Ethan went swimming in the indoor pool. Tuesday, 14 July The drive around Columbus was painless, not much traffic since we didn't leave the campground until 10:30. We went to Dayton to see the National Air Force Museum, which really was quite impressive. Lots of planes and lots of info. We saw Jim Harding's (Kerry's bro-in-law) display for his 101 missions in the O-1 over Viet ... read more

Friday, July 10, 2009 We loved Mt. Desert Island, but it was time to move on. We headed west across Maine on US 2. The countryside was not as pretty as I remembered, probably due to all the road construction going on. What a rough road, the road construction was needed, but a pain to us travellers. We relished the nice stretches of road. Once we crossed into New Hampshire, the roads were much smoother and we were soon in the White Mountains and enjoying the views of Mt. Washington, the tallest mountain in the Northeast. The top of Mt. Washington also claims the record for the highest land wind speed, 231 mph in 1934. Saturday, July 11, 2009 We continued west on US 2 into Vermont, where we eventually got on I-91 heading south after ... read more

As cold, wet and dreary as yesterday was, today was bright and sunny. Blue skies and warm temps are a welcome change. After stopping at the Visitor Center for Acadia National Park, we headed for the Park Loop Road and went up Cadillac Mountain with its spectacular vistas. We saw the Schoodic Peninsula (where we were yesterday in the rain) and Bar Harbor and the Cat Ferry that goes to Nova Scotia. We admired the islands in Frenchman Bay (including Egg Rock with its lighthouse) and the islands to the southwest (Greater Cranberry, Little Cranberry, Bakers and Sutton.) We could see most of Mt. Desert Island to the north and Eagle Lake. We spotted Otter Cove, Seawall, and lots of boats. After coming down off of Cadillac Mountain, we drove the Park Loop Road down the ... read more

Tuesday, 7 July We continued to follow US 1 north. At Damariscotta we took 130 south to Pemaquid Point andthe Pemaquid Lighthouse. It was a fairly long drive down there and back, so I decided no more really out of the way lighthouses. The Pemaquid Light was really pretty, but the day is cold, overcast and blustery with intermittant showers. Yesterday's blue ocean is gray and rough today. At Rockland we cut down 73 to Owls Head and the lighthouse there. It's a smaller lighthouse than the others we've seen, but the views from the light are gorgeous. We crossed the Penobscot River over a really neat looking bridge, then east to Ellsworth, where we stopped for a few groceries. We're staying 3 nights on Mt. Desert Island at a campground on Hadley Point. We managed ... read more

We left the campground in Epsom, NH, driving east on Hwy 4. At Portsmouth, NH, we picked up I-95 for just a few miles to the Welcome Center. There we picked up some brochures and advice and got onto US 1 heading north in search of lighthouses. We lucked onto our first, at Cape Neddick, the famous Nubble Light. It was quite pretty on its little island, but a real pain to get to, as we had to maneuver our camper down narrow residential streets. The beaches at York were rocky in spots, sandy and narrow in others, but the Atlantic Ocean looked gorgeous, fairly calm. We went looking for the light on Cape Porpoise, but never found it. We did find the Presidents Bush compound at Kennebunkport. Sorry no picture of it as I didn't ... read more

This is the first chance I've had to blog since being at Deanna's. So, Ill try to keep it brief. Thursday, we left Deanna's in Fairfax and headed north toward Dulles Airport, then west to I-81. Not the straightest route, but we decided to go that way in order to pass through West Virginia and Maryland on the way to Pennsylvania, giving Ethan 3 new states to add to his list of states he has visited. We stopped for the night at Caledonia State Park near Fayetteville, PA, a beautiful park in the forest, of course, with really nice facilities. We even went to their ampitheater after supper to see a film about the Battle of Antietam. The next morning, Friday 3 July, we headed east to Gettysburg, PA, and the battlefields etc there. We got out a little earlier this morning and headed to the Vienna/Fairfax Metrorail station again, thinking that perhaps this time we'd find parking. We were excited when the north parking garage was still open, but after driving aroiund for 30 minutes and not finding a vacant parking spot, we gave up and went to West Falls Church station again, where we found a spot on the roof again. We got off at Federal Triangle instead of the Smithsonian station and walked past the Ronald Reagan Building before realizing we were going in the wrong direction. We stopped and got directions to the Museum of Natural History. What a fantastic place! The exhiibits are terrific, the animals so life-like and in such natural poses. We thoroughly enjoyed the ocean exhibits, but had to find a docent ... read more

We dawdled this morning before heading to DC to see the Mall and the memorials. We checked early (around 9:30) and there was still parking available at Vienna/Fairfax Metrorail Station, but by the time we got there (after 11:00) all lots were full. So we headed on in to West Falls Church Station and managed to get the last parking spot in the parking garage. That's a lot of cars; Fairfax has 5,169 spaces and West Falls Church has over 2,000. Tomorrow we should head out earlier. So anyway, we got to the station and a very nice lady showed us how to get tickets from the machine and how to get a Smartrip card, which you have to have to get out of the parking lot. We got on the Orange Line train and off ... read more
