Thank you all for your comments (especially Elke!). It is nice to hear back from you. Today we started off with a nice run. Then we headed out to a town called Orange. We found a lovely park in the downtown area where the kids played and we ate our lunch. It was a fancy park with statues, an ornate fence all the way around, a fountain, lots of huge trees, and a small fenced area for the dogs to poo in. This last area appeared to be quite popular. We walked around the shops and then wandered around town where we found some ancient Roman remains of an amphitheatre where Placeto Domingo performed (more recently than Caesar who also made an appearance here not so recently). We also saw my favourite roundabout so far - ... read more

Nigel here. I have to say—the only way to really experience a country is to do a house swap. You get to stay longer (~3 weeks) and you immerse yourself in local culture in a way that is just not possible on a hotel excursion. On our annual trips to Europe, we avoid the tourist centres. For example, we are not visiting Paris this trip. By dedicating ourselves to the off the beaten track we avoid the other tourists. We are in food heaven tonight. After a long day yesterday (and we didn't even cycle 109km up a mountain...), we needed a day of rest. So, we got some laundry done and went into town (Valence) for a walk around the shops on the lovely pedestrian-only cobblestone paths. Then we drove to nearby Tournon sur Rhône and did another walk-about of the streets and took in some gorgeous scenery and history. It was very relaxing and nice to not be in the car for too long. Nigel mostly (I helped a little) enjoyed a bottle of Saint-Peray sparkling wine (champagne from St-Peray). We actually biked by the vineyard where the grapes come from. On our outing today, we saw some grapes growing on vines close up and later tried to buy wine from that vineyard (Paul Jaboulet Aine) but were not ... read more

Le Tour? What, was that yesterday? Shoot! Forgot all about it... Just Kidding. What a day! It will be very hard to capture the thrill of the day's events but I will try...We left the house early - 8am. It was just over an hour to Grenoble on the highways but once we got off the main highways and on the mountain roads the driving was slower (switch-backs) so it took over an hour to get to where we finally stopped and parked the car. By the way, we passed HUNDREDS of cyclists making their way by bike to watch the tour! We missed a critical turn going up the mountain and kept following the lineup of cars. But we did eventually find a place to park 3/4 of the way up this mountain (which turned ... read more

Well, we drove to the south of France today, right near Montpellier to a beach called Point Zero Beach in a town called Grande-Motte. Absolutely perfect. It was perfect beach weather: hot and a little breezy. But maybe it is always like that in the south of France? We got there just before lunch and had our pick of spots on the beach. We settled in for a picnic lunch and then spent the afternoon swimming, relaxing, playing in the sand and looking for crabs. Things about the beach: people are very tanned here (now Nigel and Russell glowed like light bulbs - no that photo is not overexposed, they really ARE that pale, and Rachel and I aren't exactly tanned...), lots of banana hammocks, budgie smugglers and sacs des jewels (I made that one up), ... read more

I'll start of by saying: for those of you who are getting this blog for the first time, you can move through the blog to see prior days by clicking on previous entry. Also, you may need to scroll down to see all the pictures and to add comments. Well, started off today with a nice run. Then off to Lyon, this time we knew exactly where to go! We went to the P + R, took the Metro, connected to the Tramway and arrived at the Aquarium well before lunch. The Lyon aquarium was absolutely incredible. Favourites were: sharks, boxfish, puffer fish, wee baby clown fish that had just been born, sea urchins, and the hands-on tank where you could touch starfish and turbot. A really great display. I really must say, of all the ... read more

Well, we woke up to an overcast day. But that's ok cuz we had planned to go into Lyon which we knew would be mainly indoors. At first, we went to the TGV (train de grande vitesse) station outside Valence, but when we discovered the cheapest fare for the mere 30 minute train ride was 120 Euros (gulp!), we drove to Lyon instead. We parked at a P&R outside Lyon and hopped on the Metro (only 6 Euros). Bought our city pass and found a lovely terrace to eat lunch. Nigel tried the beef snout and veal hoof as an appetizer and had pork marinated in red wine for a meal with cheese afterward. I had a salad and steamed sausages and creme caramel for dessert. There was a bottle of wine of course (unidentified house ... read more

Well, today was a huge adventure! The high point for Lori was the lowest point geographically. We woke up at a normal time finally and enjoyed a run in the beautiful weather (Scott - at one point Nigel had to "run ahead" if you know what I mean, actually, he did yesterday too now that I think of it...). Then we headed east to the Vercors Regional Nature Park. The destination was Grotte de Choranche (caves). The first part of the drive was quite lovely and then we hit the mountains. Lori literally could not look out the window and had to shield the right side of her face with both hands to avoid seeing out the window. She estimates that the stress of the drive took about 5 years off her life. When we were ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Montelimar July 17th 2011

Well, after a 12 hour sleep, we all woke up rested and ready for some action! Unfortunately, it had rained overnight and was expected to rain more during the day. We ate breakfast and then the rain stopped. We squeezed in a run along the trail by the river (which Nigel had scoped out last night) and then headed out to Montelimar for the afternoon. We went straight to the Palais des Bonbons et du Nougat. It was really cool! Montelimar is the Nougat capital of France. There were basically 3 main parts to the place. We started with the museum of candy. It provided displays showing how sugar was discovered and used through the ages. There were some really cool art displays made entirely of candy. One was a Mona Lisa made of candy. The ... read more

Well, the journey was long as expected. The flights were good and we all managed to get a few hours sleep. Each seat had its own TV with a remote/controller and we could each choose to watch TV shows, movies, play games, etc. on our own screen. It was pretty cool! Needless to say, the flight went fast! Connected in Schipol and recognized the airport right away. Had a 3 hour stopover but got lucky and Nigel and I got bulkhead seats for that flight so were really able to stretch out our legs. Too bad we didn't get that for the long flight... Arrived in Lyon and found the car. Drove to St. Peray using the GPS. We must have done something wrong though near the house cuz we ended up driving up a small ... read more
