Geo: 24.1267, -80.6836Our third, and final day at sea. I'd feared the waves would pick up as we neared the Bahamas, and got closer to Hurricane Earl, who was moving up past Florida, but the worry was for naught. If it weren't for the pictures on the news channel, we'd never have known there was a storm not too far away. Both of us spent the morning in the spa area, as Anna had her hair styled (no time for a back-to-school cut in Virginia before we left, so we had it done on board), and I had my final bootcamp class. At least the pain in my legs was gone by today's workout. We lost a couple class members who chose (or couldn't) return, but joining us was someone I'd never seen before. He and ... read more

Geo: 21.7799, -85.4297We had two full sea days ahead of us -- my personal favorite part of cruising. Anna requested breakfast in bed, so I figured "why not." We had no reason to get up too early. I had another workout in the morning while she visited Kids Club. For lunch, we went to the "Murder Mystery" show. It is put on by the Second City troupe, who act out a murder. The audience gets to provide input and the person killed is chosen by the audience. It was a fun premise and we thoroughly enjoyed it, even if we both guessed the killer incorrectly. We had dinner in La Cucina -- an Italian restaurant in the bow of the ship. Way too much food -- five courses -- and we both feel like we wasted so ... read more

Geo: 16.3302, -86.5194I can honestly say that I never expected to visit Honduras. When I was working in Panama, I used to think I'd live to visit Nicaragua or Belize...but not Honduras. It was a pleasant surprise. We didn't arrive in the port of Roatan until almost 0900, so we had time for breakfast and then we went to the way top of the ship -- 18th story -- to watch as we cruised along the coastline of Roatan island, to port. We were amazed, but aside from one other family, there was no one else on top with us. Most of the excursions on the island seemed focused on "beach breaks" and snorkeling. They say the second largest reef in the world is off the coast. Anna had decided against trying snorkeling at this time, ... read more

Geo: 20.4286, -86.8792 Our first revised port of call was the island of Cozumel, in Mexico. As I had not expected to be here, I'd done zero research on the city and what there was to do. We attended the shore excursion lecture on the ship, but the only thing which remotely interested us was an excursion to visit Mayan ruins on the mainland. We were all set to sign up, but then the prospect of the seven-hour tour, the hot temperatures, and our collective desire to relax, we decided at the 11th hour to pass it up. Instead, we elected for some shopping, and then enjoying the ship's pools and waterslides in relative quiet, as most people were off the ship. We were only one of five large cruise ships at Cozumel this day, including ... read more

Geo: 23.6445, -84.0234 Waking to bright blue skies and calm seas had us wondering if there really was a hurricane out there. We were, of course, headed the opposite direction, so my analogy is unfair. Still, it was nice to wake to a nice breakfast while cruising within sight of the Cuban mountains. I had signed up for a "Body Sculpting Boot Camp" the day we arrived, and the first of four workouts was Sunday morning. Anna checked out the scene in the kids program, while I proceeded to nearly kill myself in this boot camp. Watching the Dutch gentleman across from me "lose his breakfast" after the intense workout, had me feeling a tad more confident after successfully completing the torture -- for which I paid?! I wouldn't know it until later that night, but ... read more

Geo: 25.729, -80.2374 Our first impression upon entering the port and seeing the Epic up close was, "wow, she really is big." That was quickly followed by "wow, she really is kind of ugly." On the outside, the ship is far from a beauty, as you can see in some of the pictures. That large, darker-glass structure on the forward part of the ship is their "courtyard plaza," with three floors of suites which open onto a private courtyard, spa, restaurant, etc. I can assure you that our room was NOT up there. Our room was, shall we say, far more plebeian. Upon check-in at the terminal, they handed us a letter advising that our itinerary had been changed. Our original itinerary had us going to St. Maarten in the Dutch Antilles, St. John in the ... read more

Geo: 26.1228, -80.1505Originally, Anna and I were to be gone the week before Katherine and Jane headed to England, but a change by the tour company moved their tour up to coincide with ours. This had Anna and I leave early Saturday morning, while K and J flew out that evening. Dulles saw a lot of the Steele/Lucal family that day.Our chauffeurs (read Katherine and Jane) dropped us off at the airport before 0600, as I'd expected a madhouse scene. As it was, we were checked-in, through Security, and on the terminal train before Katherine even made it home from the airport. There is a first for everything. Our flight to Ft. Lauderdale was uneventful, and we had no trouble meeting up with our van transport down to the Port of Miami. I had never really appreciated ... read more

Geo: 38.9821, -77.5386We knew early this year that Anna and I would be spending the last week of Summer vacation together, right before she heads off to 5th grade. Katherine and her mom had planned an English sojourn for early September, so that left Anna and I to plan a little Daddy-Daughter get away. I spent a lot of time -- all of which I enjoyed -- exploring different options, and in the end, knowing how much Anna enjoys cruising, I focused on an end-of-summer cruise. We had seen several print adds touting the "coming soon" Norwegian Epic over Spring Break, so I was pleasantly surprised when I found a good opportunity to book an Eastern Caribbean cruise aboard the Epic, out of Miami. We kept Anna in the dark for several months, and made a ... read more

Geo: 37.7792, -122.42We took our time on Saturday morning, as we had to reassemble our mobile life and get everything back into suitcases, bags, etc. After last year's close call -- weight wise -- in Alaska, I brought a small portable suitcase scale, to ensure nothing was over 50 lbs. We moved things around -- often piece by piece -- and reached the magic equilibrium between bags and the wine carrier, and off we were. The sun burned through thick morning fog, and by 9:00am we were in bright sunshine and cloud-free skies. We drove through the Sonoma Valley, and then down toward San Francisco. We stopped in Sausilito for some quick sight-seeing. Couldn't figure out why it was so famous, until we got back into the car and realized we'd been in the wrong area ... read more
