Geo: 38.2988, -122.285We awoke none too early to find the previous day's sun a distant memory; replaced by a steady mist. As it was, our need to cancel our Sequoia day worked in our favor, as originally we had planned to "cram" Napa into half a day. We could now take our time, which worked out much better. In addition, we were really interested in visiting the small winery Quixote, which is only open for private tours during the week. We called first thing and were able to secure a viewing late morning, which gave us something to build around. As wineries are hardly the things of kids' fantasies, to soften the blow we stopped after breakfast and allowed Anna to choose a new Nintendo DSi game of her choosing. This went over very well, and after ... read more

Geo: 38.2988, -122.285We were only to be in Kings Canyon for one night, and today was our day to drive south to Sequoia National Park. The road connecting the parks is called the Generals Highway, and the distance is only about 25 miles...at least as the crow flies. We'd been told the day earlier, by a ranger, that the road was closed by snow and had little prospect for opening any time soon. Much of the road crosses Forest Service land, vice Park Service, and they do not make snow removal a priority. The only other way to reach Sequoia would have been to drive back down into Fresno, in the San Joaquin Valley, and then down and around, coming up from the south. Even going that route, there was no guarantee the road would be ... read more

Geo: 36.7213, -118.968When we went to bed the night before, the rain was pouring down, and the sound of the water hitting and running off the metal roof was both deafening and soothing. During the night, I noted that the sound had stopped, so I presumed the rain had ceased. When we did wake up on Wednesday morning, I happened to peek outside and was shocked to see several inches of fresh snow, with heavy flakes still falling. This was the last thing we had expected to see. After putting on every layer of clothing we had available, we trudged over to breakfast, getting ready mentally for our travel south to Kings Canyon National Park. While K and A finished eating, I went to settle our bill. I heard the counter clerk mention that the road to ... read more

Geo: 37.8772, -119.727We were all up shortly before dawn, though none of us slept particularly well. Something about cabins that are more than 125 years old...not only are they authentic, but the walls are very thin. A card game among the family next to us had us up later than we'd hoped. Nonetheless, we awoke to gray skies and a steady, cold drizzle. We filled up at breakfast and then hopped in our car for the 45-minute drive north, up and down into Yosemite Valley. We climbed from 5,000 ft to over 7,000 ft at Badger Pass (where there was still eight to 10 feet of snow along the road) and then steadily down into the valley. By the time we reached the valley floor, the clouds were very low and we did not even catch ... read more

Geo: 37.8772, -119.727We again woke early, but that helped, as we still had some things we wanted to do in San Francisco, before we retrieved our rental car and drove out to Yosemite National Park --- our home for the next two nights. Our sun of the day before was gone, and we had a cold drizzle all morning. We walked a couple blocks to a well-reviewed breakfast joint, only to find a line 10 people or so deep, so we bailed and went elsewhere. Along this walk, we encountered a persistent problem with the city -- an alarmingly high population of homeless. We'd learned the day before that San Francisco has the highest number AND proportion of homeless people of any city in the United States. They cite the mild climate and the city's Bohemian ... read more

Geo: 37.7792, -122.42As expected, our internal clocks had us up well before the sun, so we were dressed and sitting down to a huge breakfast of sourdough French toast, pancakes, hash, etc. by 07:30am. We had pre-booked some hop-on-hop-off tour tickets, and a tour of Alcatraz, and we were able to eat and be waiting at Union Square for the first tour bus to arrive shortly after 08:30. We lucked out, and we had bright, warm sun all day. With the hop-on-hop-off, we're able to at least acclimate ourselves to "the sights," and then return to areas that look really interesting. Our initial loop included the ubiquitous Chinatown, ferry docks and piers, over the Golden Gate bridge (the wind aboard the open-air upper deck of the bus was tremendous), Golden Gate Park, downtown, North Beach, and ... read more

Geo: 38.9797, -77.5298As I noted in the introduction, after watching the Ken Burns documentary last year, we got the itch to visit Yosemite National Park. For those who saw the show -- which was unnecessarily long -- they devoted multiple episodes to the fight to preserve and then defend the Yosemite area, and it really inspired us to check it out. As it turned out, this was one of our more challenging trips to plan, as we found less-than-ideal guide books for the parks, and there turned out to be so much to see and do in the area, that setting an itinerary took an inordinate amount of time. After a long period during which we had planned to rent an RV and camp during this trip, some pretty sage advice (which was proven out during ... read more

Geo: 39.0516, -77.4831It was a very short night, as we had to catch the shuttle by 4:00am for a 6:00am flight to Salt Lake City, and onward to Baltimore. With the layover in Salt Lake, this marks the third time in four years that we've been in Utah the weekend of Labor Day – very weird. With uneventful but full flights, we retrieved our car and were home in Brambleton by 6:00pm. Though our bodies told us it was early afternoon, all of us were in bed and asleep VERY early that night! ... read more
